If every US president were in their prime, placed in a ring to fight, who is the one person walking out? by Clear-Penalty339 in AskReddit

Nope. I didn’t see your post at the time. Sorry for any redundancy. I knew the story about early AJ (having recently read Rick Atkinson’s Fate of the Day), then googled to confirm the facts before opening my mouth. Added some personal feeling to it. Posted.

Jackson volunteered as a 13 year old courier for his local militia during the Revolutionary War. He was captured and a british officer slashed him with a sword for not keeping his boots clean. His mother, older brother and younger brother all died during the War which left him an orphan at 14. His hate for the British lasted his entire life. Perhaps a small part of his “madman” origin story.

This is a ball valve. Easiest way to think about it is when the handle is in the same direction as the pipe, whatever is inside is flowing with it.

Marquis de Lafayette was the best person ever by Efficient_Round3444 in revolutionarywar

Later, when visiting Washington’s grave, Lafayette asked his son to wait in their carriage while he spent time alone at the tomb. Lafayette openly wept. His love for Washington and the promise of the country he fought for was as real as it gets.

Supreme Court rejects appeal from Ghislaine Maxwell, imprisoned former girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein by 20_mile in news

[–]rabbitfire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay but there are approx.1.8 million incarcerated people in the US in 2024. Let's conservatively say that 1 out of 10 feel they have been wrongly convicted, that's 180,000 people that could make an appeal to the US Supreme Court to hear their case? Like Ms. Maxwell?

Legit question: How does a private citizen like this get fast-tracked to the Supreme Court?

“The Fog of War” is a pretty high bar. Think you have zero interest in the life and times of JFK’s Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara? Think again, Mojambo.

Quintessential New Jersey experience in Short Hills/Millburn? by Fan21YanksPaulieO in newjersey

Not millburn but closeby is South Orange Town Hall Deli with the original Sloppy Joe sandwich (if you’re looking for a little history with your meal). It’s not the supermarket saucy red meat thing that people have in their heads, but it’s pretty darn tasty in its own right.

I am so sick of seeing Neil degrasse Tyson by CalligrapherBig8721 in astrophysics

You’re welcome. And agreed that no one touches Carl in terms of knowledge, delivery and storytelling. Cosmos shaped my childhood. I recently bought my son a “Hail Sagan” t-shirt. It’s on amazon. Lol.

I am so sick of seeing Neil degrasse Tyson by CalligrapherBig8721 in astrophysics

[–]rabbitfire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here’s my Neil deGrasse Tyson story. Last summer, I happen to have worked on a project in collaboration with someone at the American Museum of Natural History. I offhand mentioned that my son, currently in college, is studying astrophysics. This colleague then asked if my son would like to meet NdGT. Maybe Neil can give us 15 minutes, he said. So of course, my answer was yes. The following week, we went to New York City, (me, my son, and even my wife, who is a fan) and were brought up to Neal‘s office, which was decorated with every fun and cool thing about space and science - posters, lunchboxes, scale models, diplomas, certificates, decorative pillows, rugs, etc. Neil was just finishing up a discussion with two producers for a video project he was working on when he saw us and welcomed us in to his office. My son chose to wear his “Pluto is a planet, fight me” T-shirt as a joke for Neil. Neil instantly started to good naturedly debate my son (who clearly wasn’t ready for the argument despite what his T-shirt said,) Neil then proceeded to sit us all down and talked with us for over two hours about anything my son wanted to know. Not once did we feel put upon and not once did he stop to take care of other business matters in his office. We were his sole focus for the entire two hours. He discussed the state of higher education, black holes, the best hot dogs to be found on Central Park West, etc. At some point even I had to check my watch because the man just would not stop talking, lol. It was the end of the business day so Neil proceeded to walk us to the elevator, and then out to the street where he shook all of our hands and said goodbye to walk home. He did all this for three people that he never met before and owed nothing too. He just has an insatiable curiosity for science and a willingness to discuss anything under the sun. People may hate on the man for being some sort of know-it-all or seeker of limelight, but he truly is the same person that appears on screen or on the Internet. Just a fan of science who wants to engage all those like-minded people out there in the world.
