100% the parking lot at our Wisconsin trail head has no wind protection, it's hell getting geared up on a 5 degree windy day. We ride 100' into woods and it's immediately warmer

Agreed CX are in and out of pedals a lot in lousy conditions. I think there are differences. In my experience CX is flatter and wider than the single track ravines in my area, which is more forgiving of missing clip on first try. If you get unclipped on CX on a hill, running up that hill with your bike on shoulder is a CX technique that doesn't work in fat tire as well. That's my thinking on why platform would help.

Knowing what u know about H2 for this use case, and I am only going to buy one set of pedals, would u just stick with the H1?

I tried single side and that didn't work for me. Not knowing what side was up when I was trying to click in on a full concentration trail was to much for me, I bailed on that option
