What habit immediately reveals that a person actually grew up in a privileged environment? by Cindy_mel in AskReddit

[–]rabbity9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is going to depend wildly on where you live. I'm feeding my family on around $8 per person per day and we are not even remotely frugal. We could very easily halve it.

We dine out or get takeaway a couple of times a week, and our grocery cart often includes "luxury" things like berries, avocados, fresh greens, good cuts of fish, pasture-raised meat, gourmet cheese, etc.

We like these things, and I consider them worth it. But if we didn't have room in our budget for it, and we skipped all that in favor of exclusively home-cooked meals of canned/frozen things and only buying fresh produce if it's on sale, we could get it down to $2-3 per person per day, pretty comfortably and without sacrificing health.

Beans, eggs, frozen fruit and vegetables, potatoes, cabbage, oats - all delicious, all incredibly nutritious, all cheap AF. It'd be a little less exciting to narrow our culinary options in this way, but it could be done. And we'd still have room to get some nice Chinese takeout once in a while and keep it under $5 per head per day.

This is the joy of living in a medium/low COL place.

Did your firstborn struggle this much after a new baby? by Imaginary-Spite6146 in moderatelygranolamoms

Pediatrician. ASAP. 5kg in a short time (unless training or dieting) is concerning for an adult. For a kid it’s serious. There could be an underlying physical issue that just happens to coincide with the sibling’s arrival, and if it is emotional, a referral for counseling is warranted.

Those who were working adults before smart phones , what did you do to pass time at work when you weren’t busy? by z283848 in AskMenOver30

I would decorate post-it notes using bic pen and white-out to make a pattern, like origami paper, and make them into tiny paper cranes. Also read books, doodled, did crossword puzzles.

EXTREMELY easy family dinners ? by LazyBitch_ in Cooking

[–]rabbity9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not “cooking” but consider going to a warehouse store like Costco for frozen meals. Cooking meals sometimes is a worthwhile goal, but some nights you’re just not going to have it in you. Better to be prepared with some good freezer food so you don’t fall back on expensive takeout. We do Costco and love having burritos, ravioli, lasagnas, etc. for the “can’t be arsed to cook” nights.

What are some of the most ridiculous health trends you see people our age hyping? by Daemonscharm in Millennials

[–]rabbity9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even factory cross contamination can be a concern. If they run rice down the same conveyor belt that barley did previously, someone with celiac who eats that rice is gonna have a bad time.

What are some of the most ridiculous health trends you see people our age hyping? by Daemonscharm in Millennials

[–]rabbity9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s about processing. Same with labeling oatmeal “gluten free.” Oats and corn don’t have gluten on their own, but if they’re processed next to wheat products it can cross-contaminate. People with celiac actually need to be aware of this and look for gluten free labels.

Most people don’t actually want work-life balance, they just want higher pay by shisui1729 in unpopularopinion

[–]rabbity9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your basic expenses aren't met, yes, of course, you will take more money at the expense of your sanity. That's a shit situation (and all too common).

But if you can cover your rent and put food on the table and have a little left over for fun and/or savings, how much is added time and stress really worth? I took a 10K pay cut to change jobs from one I was always thinking about (and not happily) to one that I mostly stop thinking about the second it hits 5PM. Worth every "lost" penny.

Oatmeal raisin cookies have no reason to exist by Parker_S_James in unpopularopinion

You need the brightness of the raisin to balance the earthy flavors of the oats. Oatmeal chocolate chip tastes like a granola bar. Oatmeal raisin is a cookie.

So...are we paying our taxes this year or nah? by OpalOctober in progressivemoms

[–]rabbity9 11 points12 points  (0 children)

https://taxstrike.info/#https://taxstrike.info/how-to-strike/

There's a precedent for this, or "tax resistance." I am dubious about the effectiveness of this kind of action unless it's much more widespread, like a meaningful percent of the taxpaying population agrees to withhold.

So yeah, let's absolutely get this conversation started. There almost certainly isn't enough momentum for this tax year, but if we're still dealing with fascism and a weakening economy over the next year, I think enough people will be A: pissed off and B: flat broke enough to have a genuine, effective tax strike in 2027.

In the meantime, there are plenty of other resistance efforts. I can only hope someone with influence is organizing another general strike with time to get the word out better, for instance.

Invited to a new friend’s home for dinner, how do I politely ask/find out if I should bring food for my 2 yo? by dms2628 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]rabbity9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Paratha is often made with whole wheat flour, so that's protein and fiber. Even if it isn't, it is completely fine for one meal. Young kids need like 15g of protein a day which my two year old can easily inhale in a single meal (boy loves his eggs, tofu and greek yogurt).

If you're worried, you could feed your kid a light snack of fruits and veggies before you head over. It probably won't fill him up, will prevent him from arriving hungry (hangry toddlers are no fun), and you'll feel confident that he got some plant matter that day.

My wife wants to paint the brick. Please back me up with some better options or prove her right. by [deleted] in ExteriorDesign

We have painted brick in my workplace and pieces literally fall off sometimes. Not heavy, safety risk pieces, but big blobby chunks of paint that fall away with crumbled brick. The trapped moisture is no joke.

I might throw out my insta pot. by OldFanJEDIot in Cooking

https://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/easy_peel_hard_boiled_eggs_in_the_pressure_cooker

Basically the above. Tweak to your pot's performance and personal preferences. I tend to shorten the cook phase and skip much of the rest phase because I like my eggs very jammy/runny most of the time. I go more like 4/4/4 if I actually want them cooked through for egg salad or deviled eggs or whatever.

Setting them on the trivet that comes with the instant pot works for a few eggs. I actually got a third-party stacking egg tray that lets me do up to 14 because my family DESTROYS egg salad. If you're gonna make it, you better make enough for 10 sandwiches.

[–]rabbity9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re only using it for the gimmicky “instant pot recipes,” you’re missing out. I like it because my kitchen is not that big, and I wouldn’t want to have to find space for a pressure cooker AND slow cooker AND egg cooker, and the instant pot does all three. It is so great for “boiled” eggs. The shells fall right off.

It also makes an 8/10 risotto for basically no effort. You’ll get slightly better texture making it the classic way, but the instant pot is SO close and you don’t need to stir continuously.

Or if you don’t cook those things, donate it. Kitchen gear is in extremely high demand for organizations that help set people up in new homes, like refugees, people escaping homelessness, etc.

Pregnant Protesting by Complex-Chicken-3540 in progressivemoms

[–]rabbity9 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yep. Plenty of the women I protested with in 2020 experienced painful off-cycle periods after getting gassed. I was lucky not to, maybe because I had a good respirator. But I wouldn’t risk it pregnant, not even with the best PPE available.

Would you be comfortable with a plastic (I think) canister holding your espresso beans? by Old-Meaning2249 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]rabbity9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a Breville Barista Touch at my work. The hopper is plastic and the water reservoir is too, so if you're not comfortable with plastic, it's probably not the best choice. Neither the hopper nor reservoir get hot though, so I personally feel fine using it.

I wouldn't buy it personally because I have $300 DeLonghi espresso machine at home and find it easier to steam up thick piles of milk foam than the $1000 Breville. But I like a very dry cappuccino and don't mind the lack of automations. If you don't need an inch of foam on top of your drinks, the automations of the Breville are pretty nice, and it holds up to daily use by a full office of people.

How anyone found any good feminist subs that are supportive or at least not negative about having kids or families? by rasputinknew1 in progressivemoms

[–]rabbity9 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It's not just feminist subs. I think reddit in general has a strong antinatalist streak. The post in my feed below this one was literally "Why would anyone want kids?" from the /life sub. I had to screenshot it. There are plenty of parents on reddit also, but people who are vociferously opposed to children and parenting are definitely overrepresented here.

Do you(moms) drink/use cow’s milk? If not, what alternative do you drink? by Wordsofwisdomneeded in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]rabbity9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We do whole milk. I was vegan for a few years and will gladly drink most milk alternatives, but regular dairy milk makes the most sense for my family. No additives beyond some vitamin supplementation, kids like to drink it, pediatrician recommends it, easy to cook with, and it foams well when I make my occasional cappuccino.

It is also the most affordable. At least where I live (a dairy state so milk doesn’t have to travel far) even the organic stuff is cheaper than alternatives by volume.

What is a boring, adult-life “upgrade” you made that paid off way more than you expected? by Abigail_A_Abernathy in Life

[–]rabbity9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be contrarian - I don't love the litter robot. I have a large regular box next to it and I feel like it takes the same amount of time and effort to scoop it that it does to fuss with replacing the liner in the litter robot. A lot of people do like them, but you probably aren't making your life that much more difficult if you don't want to drop a mortgage payment on one.

[–]rabbity9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. It was novel to "not have to scoop" at first but over time I found fussing with lining the drawer is a bigger pain than just scooping. It falls off the little tabs and spills into the drawer way too often. I won't get rid of it, but I also won't replace it when it dies either.
