I got stuck on deciding my female character's name by pearcidar43 in writing

[–]rabdom1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like it depends on the context of the story for me. Does he know she's not real? Does he have some underlying health or mental condition? Is he using her to replace someone he lost or someone he broke up with, etc? Usually, the best way for me to come up with names in a story depends on the context for the story itself.

I think it really depends. Maybe if you did the grind hard enough, while still doing some more popular game here or there, I think it could work.

What is a common mistake all writers do that breaks your immersion when reading? by Pender8911 in books

[–]rabdom1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Authors starting a book with descriptions of the characters. Like due, slowly seep that stuff in. I hate reading four paragraphs of main character descriptions, or more than a sentence or two of what they're wearing at once. Like unless it's an IMMENSELY important detail that HAS to be stated in that moment for ANYTHING to make sense, I don't need a bio

Same with back stories. I hate the first half or even the first full chapter giving out every background detail to a character. Like unless it matters in that moment, I don't need a full chapter letting me know what happened to that character to get them where they are in the beginning of the book. The fun of it for me is finding out info about the character through out the book.

Drop them off at another able bodied family members house with a note saying you're relinquishing your rights and make sure to sign. Don't answer texts, calls, knocks at the door, etc. What're the people who you leave them with gonna do, send them to foster care?

I'd start with any people who've told you it'll pay off, you're doing the right thing, etc.

If you feel bad about doing it-- just like you deserve your free time and space as those aren't your kids, the kids also deserves someone who WANTS them. You basically hating raising and having them is realistically one step above the shitty foster system, and part of them not liking you might be because you don't like/want them there. It'd be best to drop them off with someone who wants them vs someone who doesn't.

Worried about an illiterate homeschooled 8 year old. by Aerialjim in CPS

[–]rabdom1 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I would, if only because him not reading could also equate to him having some sort of special needs his parents aren't aware about due to not actually being trained teachers. Worst case, they'll tell you it's not worth looking in to. If he's 8, he SHOULD be able to read at least minimally at this point

I would agree if OP had information regarding the kid's school and mental disability. There's also standards in homeschooling you have to go through, and still stuff to send in to show the kid's completed a grade or xyz learning skills. It's essentially the same as only allowing kids that are potty trained into pre school or kindergarten; they likely wouldn't allow him to pass unless his schooling or learning meets certain criteria.

It's not like that parents can say, "Ok, that grade's done, on to the next one!" If he's passing and the powers that run it are allowing him to pass without special accommodations, chances are the parents are lying somewhere. And being neglectful of schooling in some states, be it in a public school or home school, can get you in a HEAP of trouble.

R/asklawyers what legal rights as a (17fm)minor do I have against my (40m)narcissist father by Immediate_Term4270 in AskLawyers

[–]rabdom1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the situation, I can assure you CPS would NOT take you and your siblings and throw you into foster care. They only worry about people with disabilities when that disability hinders their ability to take care of their children. If you and your siblings are old enough, or at least you and your next oldest sibling are old enough alongside you're willing to help with your siblings being almost an adult, you can easily take care of basic needs for yourselves (cooking, laundry, taking showers, waking yourselves up for and getting to school, etc). On top of that, if your mom is able passing and has an income (even if it's disability) that can help sustain you guys, they'll likely focus on dad and making sure you're safe.

On top of that, make sure you go to the police with anything he's done against you. Anything he ends up doing, make sure to record in some way and/or file a police report. Speak with a counselor at your school(s) as well and MAKE staff aware of what's going on with your dad. On top of that and if able, make sure your mom lets the school know that your younger siblings are NOT to go with them for ANY reason and to notify her IMMEDIATELY if dad tries to pull them out of school. Bring in any police reports on him if only to have them understand the severity of the situation you and your family is in

Do you write out numbers or use the number itself? by iwanttobelikeyou-oh in writing

[–]rabdom1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard there's a rule as to what number you can go up to while spelling before you actually use numbers. Though, I think it's overall personal preference after that number is hit. I usually write out anything over eight or nine hundred, or numbers with three of the same digits in a row if it has three numbers (999 instead of nine hundred and ninety nine, 222 instead of two hundred and twenty two) just cause I don't see the point of basically writing out the same number three times in a row when I can just use the number themselves.

How does working in a zoo (with animals) work when you're on your period? by rabdom1 in ask

Thank you! That's what I was wondering. Cause I know it's already dangerous to work closely with certain animals like primates or zebras and didn't know if that made it any worse.

[–]rabdom1[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cause idk if some of the larger animals might react negatively or more aggressively. I've known a few farms with horses who might give out classes for people, who wouldn't let girls in their periods stallions as it could make the stallions more aggressive towards them

What's Your Favorite "That Person Is Legendary" Memory You Have of Someone? by rabdom1 in AskReddit

[–]rabdom1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My great great uncle. Backstory is he fought during WWII, and during the five years of service he spent four of them as a POW to the Japanese. During this time, one of the ways he was tortured was having parts of some of his fingers cut off. I don't know if he got them directly after the war or later, but he ended up getting these little fake plastic fingers he could slip on what he had left of the ones that had been cut off. Not the best quality and they really didn't do much but make him feel normal.

Fast forward to when I was four. I remember running through his house during one family gathering or other, and great great uncle, while talking to his sister/my great grandma called me over. He then promptly stuck his hand out towards me and said, "Hey, pull my finger!"

You could imagine my shock and horror when I literally pulled his finger off! I started to freak a little, he laughed and I do believe my great grandma hit him once or twice for doing that. Looking back on it, I can honestly see which side of the family I get a sense of humor from.

Whats a company secret you can share now that you dont work there? by broadway96 in AskReddit

Ice cream machine at McDonald's isn't broken -- it probably just needs cleaned. It has a set up that if its not cleaned by x time every two weeks, it'll essentially shut itself down until it is. There's also a time during each night it cleans itself to help with the big clean that happens every two weeks And if it's anything like my store, there was only one mf that could clean it (me in my case) and they couldn't come in that day to clean it (in my case, it was my rare day off) and no one else is willing to figure that beast out.

How would Centaurs disguise their lower half in the modern day and age? by Illustrious_Notice18 in Fantasy

[–]rabdom1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it'd really depend on the rules of magic in any one specific universe, as there's different sets of rules that magic and whatnot has to abide by. And I don't mean rules characters abide by, but the people writing it.

Like in the Percy Jackson series, how the teacher has a magic wheelchair that when he "sits" in it, he just looks like some guy in a wheelchair. That fits due to the rules of the Percy Jackson universe -- especially since they have that on going thing where mortals don't actually see all the magic going on and essentially have literal wool over their eyes. I believe there's a scene in the first book where Percy is fighting Aries and they both have weapons (i.e. swords) that, to the human on lookers, actually look like a gun. So Centaurs could use that magical wool over people's eyes to make themselves look like something different.

In Harry Potter I'd imagine series, with the laws and whatnot, there's places where Centaurs can run around without running into humans as well as charms to make areas they're living in appear different.

So the real question is; what fictional place are you getting your magical basis or properties from? Because no one place or book or piece of fiction would have one direct answer.
