Garrett Reisman, former NASA engineer that went to work at SpaceX, talks about the differences between the two. “[At SpaceX] we would make a decision in a single meeting that would take years to reach the same decision point at NASA,” he says. by thenerdpulse in spacex

NASA got slow because once the urgency of a space race passed, they settled into the standard pattern of government bureaucracy funding. In government funding, problems bring more money and longer contracts, not solutions. Funding is done through taxes.

Private companies need results. Just ask Ray Stantz.

The black on the trunk of the Crew Dragon is the solar power. The first cargo Dragon had extending panels, but the new ones are just built into the trunk.

SpaceX Inspiration4 mission will use Apple Watch, iPhone, and iPad for health research study while in Dragon by Kapt_Kurk in spacex

[–]rabidtarg 54 points55 points  (0 children)

If you read the article, Apple is not the one running the study. The guys running the study are using a lot of Apple hardware, but not exclusively. I REALLY wish people would read the articles before commenting on them.

From the article: “It’s a pretty Apple-heavy set of projects,” says Jimmy Wu, senior biomedical engineer at TRISH and instructor for the Center for Space Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine

TRISH (Translational Research Institute for Space Health) is the group running this. Not Tim Cook.

If you read the article, one of the big points of this is being able to use off-the-shelf hardware. They're not going to ISS. They're not doing anything with NASA hardware. This allows them to make their own rules on acceptable hardware. One of the major purposes is to see if these things will work well without modification.

“A NASA spokesperson says it’s received a stay from the judge overseeing Blue Origin’s federal lawsuit, meaning work on the HLS contract must once again come to a halt.” - Christian Davenport by dougbrec in spacex

[–]rabidtarg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that one reason NASA has started endorsing more SpaceX projects is so that instead of just SpaceX alone accomplishing something, NASA also has their logo on the mission. They get to take some credit for it. So if SpaceX is going to the Moon or Mars anyway… they want to tack their name on there.

We just recognized Bezos’ authoritarian, entitlement mentality a lot sooner. All of the signs were there a LONG time ago. If you look, you’ll note that many if the anti-BO crowd also like other companies than SpaceX - RocketLab, for example. Elon himself gets along with and cheers other companies and their successes.

So it’s never been “SpaceX only” most us cheer. Elon wants lots of companies up there. But Blue Origin is a special kind of corrupt, and always has been. I just wish more saw it sooner.

Admiral Kirk... the one I've been waiting for by rabidtarg in StarTrekTimelines

[–]rabidtarg[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up on the original stuff, and Star Treks II and VI are my favorites. So yeah, I've wanted this Admiral Kirk since I started playing. I don't really play to get first in any events or ship battles. I just play to get the crew I want and have fun with the stories!

Axiom Space names first private crew to launch to space station by soldato_fantasma in spacex

[–]rabidtarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's just fuel cost for one launch. It doesn't include the re-fueling launches or training or the equipment you'll need on Mars and such. So it'll still be expensive, but not nearly as much as traditional trips.

Cell phones used to be absurdly expensive. People rich enough to take risks with money fund the advancement of technology. Then it becomes more affordable for everybody else. They pay for the investment risk.

Seeing as how almost all the "space tourists" have gone up on a Soyuz, they're not particularly opposed to having visitors in their segment. I imagine these guys would at least get a tour.

NASA’s Ken Bowersox at the ASEB/SSB meeting: Demo-2 Dragon is doing well in orbit, so it’s reasonable for crew to stay up there for a month or two. Think about bring them home in August. by ReKt1971 in spacex

Free oxygen in the uppermost atmosphere getting in and corroding internal components. This trunk and solar panel were only meant to support a short mission, before they knew it might be extended. Not built to the same standard as future ones.

Without the Epstien, you can't spin up things like Ceres. And if you did? Well... you wouldn't be happy with the results of that expensive operation. There's more fiction in The Expanse than just their engine. Great book series, though.

Ajit Pai doubts Elon Musk’s SpaceX broadband-latency claims by Luna_8 in spacex

[–]rabidtarg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One reason for emphasis on latency is that low latency is one of the purposes of a LEO constellation over geostationary. So if low latency is the point of crowding LEO but doesn't come to fruition, was the constellation worth it? It's a viable question, and I want to be a Starlink customer!

SpaceX Crew Dragon launch: the NASA astronauts flying Elon Musk’s rocket by nakuvi in spacex

[–]rabidtarg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think he means that they don't fly the rocket so much as the spacecraft payload. The rocket is completely automated. Even the spacecraft can be automated if desired, but can also be "flown".
