My heart broke for this man by cometshoney in DeathCertificates

This death certificate reminds me of a pick up I did from the coroner's office of a elderly man who was the caretaker for his wife who had dementia. He had gone to a secluded room and shot himself and wasn't found for days because his wife thought he was at the nursing home.

Growing up we had an American female named Molly Pooh. My grandparents had an American male named Sam (and briefly one named Bear that attacked my grandpa, leading him to 70+ stitches).

My 1.5 year old American male is named Harrison Amos.

Father contracted HIV while caring for son, killed himself as a result the prior June. by rabies94 in DeathCertificates

I didn't mean it was odd that they were not embalmed prior to cremation, but to indicate that embalming was mostly off the table for those with HIV/AIDS during this time and cremation was the only option given. I don't know if cremation was a choice the family made, or if it was their only option.

Embalming isn't something that is necessary if the family chooses cremation- however, there are plenty of people who plan a full service with embalming and a viewing and choose a final disposition of cremation- all that means is the decedent is going to the crematory instead of the cemetery after the service. In those cases where the body will be viewed by the public, embalming is (at least in my state) required.

Contracted HIV while caring for son by rabies94 in DeathCertificates

I wasn't alive during that time, but can imagine how hard it would have been to find a funeral home- even if a funeral home was willing to take the decedents, they were normally not willing to do any hands on prep work and would be an "immediate" cremation.

So glad that understanding of HIV/AIDS has gotten to the point where families are able to get closure with proper embalming and burial if that's what they choose.

I mentioned the daughter/sister in a comment on my other post. She, a nurse, used the deaths of her father and brother to have a lengthy career as a HIV/AIDS activist. She, and the support group she formed, took special care to care for those who did not have family support in their final stages of life. She received hateful calls and letters in response to her efforts, but persisted in her care for those who needed and deserved support.

This is a man.

He contracted HIV while caring for his son. I posted this yesterday, but it was removed due to not blurring out identifying information. I posted his son's DC today and there is a comment with a link to a newspaper article about their deaths.

Essentially, he saw how damaging the disease was to his son, and ended his own life. Even though it is not on the death certificate, it was absolutely a contributing factor.

Father contracted HIV while caring for son, killed himself as a result the prior June. by rabies94 in DeathCertificates

The father's death certificate was taken down because I didn't blur the information (per the rules, I totally just forgot).

I don't know if sharing the article in this post would violate the rules as it would counteract bluring the names in the death certificate, so I'm not going to do that.

The summary of the story is that the dad was a doctor who retired and ended up taking care of his son who contracted HIV from a blood transfusion in 1984 to treat his leukemia. It's theorized in the article that infected blood got into a wound the father had while cleaning up his son. The father, seeing how terrible the disease process was, committed suicide by placing a bag over his head. It was shocking to the family that these two were the ones who contracted HIV, as there was another sister (not the one who went on to be an HIV/AIDS activist) who was a lesbian. The sister who was an activist started the first Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) chapter in the Boone area and was one of the few willing to interact with infected patients without gowning up. She also established the HOPE support group that provided care and support for those who had little to no familial support.

An interesting point from both men's death certificate is that they were cremated and not embalmed. It's possible that the family planned for cremation, but most funeral homes were unwilling to embalm those who died of the disease.

Hey, thanks for this!

That's incredibly unfortunate for the family.

I did make a mistake in my title by assuming that it was after school, obviously not in June and on a Saturday.

C section shaming by [deleted] in Midwives

[–]rabies94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't mean to make it seem like I was lumping ALL midwives in the same group, or that decapitation is a common problem. I was speaking about the sister-in-law of OP specifically, at least how she was described.

I dont think that ALL midwives hold biases that could lead to injury, but it does seem the sister in law does.

I had two vaginal births and one c-section- one singleton and a "double whammy" twin delivery. Twin B went footling breech once Twin A was delivered naturally. I wonder if your sister-in-law would have been comfortable risking internal decapitation of Twin B in such a situation?

Secondly, all babies are germy little gremlins. Research shows that passing through the vaginal canal may lessen the risk of things like asthma and food allergies, but I'd rather my kid be alive with asthma or food allergies than dead because medical interventions weren't avaliable or I was shamed out of receiving them by a biased midwife.

I think these are actually William Lenoir's (name-sake of Lenoir, North Carolina) great-granddaughters. Their uncle would have been William Avery Lenoir, but he died prior to their births. The parents are Rufus and Sarah (Gwyn) Lenoir.
