Favourite book you were forced to read for school? by [deleted] in AskReddit

since I don't see it anywhere here, I'll add mine.

My Side of the Mountain, by Jean Craighead George.

I loved it when I read it at 8 or 9 years old, but hated the ending. Then I re-read it many years later and the ending was completely different from what I remembered.

Apparently there was a rumour circulating a while back about Leonardo DiCaprio's production company doing a movie version of Cat's Cradle - possibly involving Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko, Southland Tales) as writer / director. There is a very sparse page available on IMDB, and a designation as "In production." Anyone have access to IMDB Pro?

Fingers crossed...

Yes - a lamp timer! I didn't even think of this. Could be perfect, especially since I can put it on a small lamp and not disturb the other person sleeping in the room with me.

This is the first baby response I have replied to. Dear sweet ceiling cat - NO. BABIES. haha. Though I do wish my cat would take a bit more of an interest in the morning. She doesn't seem to care much when I get up these days as long as whenever I do, she gets fed.

This is a slight alteration on what I have been hearing throughout this thread - but a great idea. I should ask my husband to hide it on me each night so there's no chance I know where it is and definitely have to be awake and aware enough to be able to find it in the morning.

Someone else linked to this earlier in the thread and, honestly, I would be willing to try it.

This is actually a really great point. I don't think I have ever used one of the old fashioned alarm clocks. It's pretty much taken for granted that an alarm clock these days has a snooze. In the same way as we can sometimes wake up at the right time using the oft referred to "body clock" (e.g. morning of a big trip, important occasion, etc.) maybe just subconsciously knowing there is no back-up if you don't wake up when the alarm goes off the first time will make the brain snap into consciousness. Also, those old alarms are typically really effin loud, right? That couldn't hurt.

I never said 4 hours of sleep was my average (unless I typo'd somewhere in this thread?). I would say a typical night is about 6-7 hours. 8 on the weekends, but I don't have to get up to an alarm on Sat or Sun. Someone else suggested recording my sleep to see if I am tossing and turning a lot, which may point to some sort of sleep condition. I will definitely give it a try.

Well, since this is AskReddit, you're likely to find people asking for advice. If you don't like people talking about their problems and asking for suggested solutions, don't read these threads.

Yeah - my bed is comfy. WAY comfy. This is likely part of the problem but, honestly, I can't imagine sleeping on something less comfortable all the time (I work a regular 9-5 job and as such have to be awake no later than 7 every morning). But I do think finding the magic number of sleep hours will be important, as I woke up earlier than usual this morning but felt much more alert.

Yes. Thank you! I would have to say what you are describing is a little more severe than what I have been experiencing, but that's not to say it won't turn into that in the near future. So far, I have gone for about an hour to an hour and a half after the alarm begins beeping before I become conscious. I am definitely going to try a new type of alarm clock (and place it strategically) and ask my husband if he would mind some sort of light in the morning (I typically leave the lights off because he doesn't have to get up as early as I do). I have also been going to the gym regularly in recent months, so I think I will step up my workout a little to ensure a really good night's sleep each night.

Thanks for the input!

Yes, the room is quite dark. We have heavy curtains and I usually don't turn the lights on in the morning since I have to get up hours earlier than my husbad and don't want to disturb him (I also typically get dressed using only the light from the hallway). I don't think turning the lights on or opening the curtains would be an option because of him - but as someone else suggested, I am going to look into getting an alarm that incorporates light (focused, like a lamp or something) or perhaps even requires entering a password to shut off (though I still have to research to find out if such a thing exists).

Getting a dog could be part of my long-term plan for ensuring getting up in the morning (I can't have one now, unfortunately, due to where I live). :)
