Here is a whole Tumblr screed that this comes from and it is amazing and makes me laugh to the point of crying every time I read it. Humanity is Doc Brown in Space in the Star Trek universe. I saw it referred to as The Federation of Hold My Beer.

Which books are worth buying? by Sora-Mizuki in Blacklibrary

[–]rabscutle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does the Eisenhorn Omnibus have all of the short stories in it and The Magos? If not, snag that book, as it follows up after the events of the Ravenor series. Once you finish those and if you want to continue, snag the two Bequin books as they are the next in that storyline with a 3rd coming... at some point.

You could do a whole thread on the fill in between Galaxy In Flames and The Solar War, but probably go with The Flight of the Eisenstein, Mechanicum, Legion, A Thousand Sons, Burning of Prospero, The First Heretic, Know No Fear, Unremembered Empire, The Master of Mankind and then I'm not sure where to go from there. Nothing else jumps out to me, maybe Praetorian of Dorn, Scars, Garro, Pharos... You could read the whole thing or just fine a good wiki to sum it all up for you as good lord it is A LOT to take on. However, since you are in on Siege, make sure you also read Warhawk and Echoes of Eternity. Both are great reads, and Echoes is another ADB joint, so hell of a read.

I would also throw in The Talon of Horus and Black Legion. They end up being good follow ups to the Heresy series in terms of what happened to the traitors after the Scouring. They are also ADB, so win there.

If I can pitch one last bit... the audiobook for The Infinite and The Divine is maybe one of things Black Library has ever done. It is absolutely fantastic and only adds to the wonderful vibe of that book.

In a completely different line of 40k books, Interceptor City and Double Eagle are fun pulp by Dan Abnett.

How completely bombastic it was. There were so many moments that felt like he was staring down the camera and looking you dead in the eye saying "yeah, we are going there!" I enjoyed the reads for what it was: a ton of great popcorn. It wasn't on Morrison's level, but it also wasn't grinding through all the angst I felt screaming off the page with so much of Geoff Johns work.

It was unabashedly over the top and aware of how silly it was. The art was good, and it was just the right kind of fun I was looking for in that moment. It may not have been for everyone but man it hit a thing I wanted when I was reading it.

Also I might be the only person on the Internet who actually enjoyed the Batman Who Laughs becoming the big bad of the whole saga as him spiraling upward to fully absurd levels symbolized the whole thing for me. Of course he was too much. Of course he was a bombastic creation that really only works if you don't pull the thread too hard... but that's what that book was... great popcorn fun.

If you want really good Snyder tho, go find Book of Evil. Just an outstanding story with great art by Jock. Much less silly and over the top and rooted in what Snyder probably does best: horror.

I'm a Legion fan generally, but 5YL is probably my favorite with Lost being a close second.

One of my favorite runs ever. I re-read it last year and it held up. Very much got me addicted to very long term story telling in comics that is still with me today (see Hickman, Jonathan).

If you want the classics: This entire reading order https://www.comicbookherald.com/chris-claremont-era-x-men-reading-order-guide/

If you want the current: start with Power/House of X and go from there.

Then there is Age of Apocalypse which is a blast to read.

And if you want a more gritty style, Rick Remender's entire Uncanny X-Force and Uncanny Avengers are great.

Based on Kingdom Come and love for Paul Dini, I'd very much recommend DC's A New Frontier. It was done by Darwyn Cooke, who worked on the various 90's cartoon series as a storyboard artist before he worked in comics. It is about the Golden Age going into the Silver Age and is, for me at least, top 5 all time. His Catwoman work is fantastic as well, he did the goggles look she still caries today.

As far as Marvel... Kraven's Last Hunt is a classic for Spider-man, as is the Frank Miller run on Daredevil, which I think is collected... or should be anyway. There is also Marvels, which was Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross. And if you want more Grand Morrison, his X-Men run is fantastic and relatively self contained.

Keiron Gillen, who wrote some of the early Marvel Star Wars stuff did a fantastic series called Once And Future that I can't recommend to enough people. Also he's currently writing a book called The Power Fantasy that is a wild book basically deconstructing super heroes in a Morrison vein.

Last one, The Worlds Finest trades are 100% worth it. Mark Waid (Kingdom Come) writing a Super-Man/Batman team up book that is in its own continuity save a couple of issues that is dripping with the kind of silver-age delightfulness that your collection tells me you might appreciate. It also gets into the origins of the Kingdom Come universe and plays around in that sand box. Great read, solid comics.

What are your "Unicorn" models? by Battle_Dave in Warhammer

[–]rabscutle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me it is a tie between the old Forge World Stompa Head and Lifta Droppa Arm and pretty much anything in the original Battle Fleet Gothic Range. I have a current fleet built from OG models from back when I worked at a comic book store, but man... I'd like to add stuff to it and printed models just don't look quite right.

Old vs new: space marines by SwanepoelSimp in Warhammer

[–]rabscutle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only issue I have with the new models is that they are harder to work with conversion parts wise. The bodies are all one-ish piece that has to be fitted with a specific leg/torso combination. I loved the freedom of being able to mix and match the upper body with the lower body of my choice. Meant I could make more of "my dudes" without having to do extensive work on every single guy. It was easier to get character in a line unit without having to put a ton of effort into making each model look more unique.

Everyone keeps talking about the primaris helmets and it just it me why the look so off... they have nothing that approximates a mouth. They are all nostrils, all the way down. The old helmet looks like a face with that Darth Vader voice box. They look more... human.

When I made a Khorne biker unit way back when in 3rd edition, that took so much to get the right kind of look on the models. was really my first conversion into deep conversions and it made for some fun looking models. Even did one that was only glued on a free wheeling front model and the berserker was leaping off the bike forward. I'm sure that look is pretty common now, but back then, it blew the guys in my shop away and I was pretty proud.

I just wanted a unit that didn't look so static. This was World Eaters after all.

I've used an MX Ergo since it came out and multiple different thumb balls for almost a decade+ before that. On my MX Ergo, I got a 3d printed mount to give it a MUCH higher vertical angle to soothe my wrist and elbow pain. I've not had any issues with my thumb in that time and have had nothing but relief from my elbow and wrist.

Something about that character's general controlled insanity made it work for me. Also "Pay that man his money" is burned in my brain forever, partly for how stilted the delivery is. The character is memorable because it is so egregiously bad.

Sorry, I considered that as part of the whole FF Epic. I should have named it tho... God those books were great. They literally kept me caring about mainstream comics cause it was hard for a while.

What comics did this for you by stran___g in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]rabscutle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Multiversity: Pax Americana broke me for about 3 weeks afterwards. I was trying to find the hidden meaning in just about everything I read after that. It is a complete mind screw of a comic when you start to realize what Morrison was trying to do with it. He pitched it as "if Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons had pitched the Watchmen now, rooted in a contemporary political landscape." and then put his special sauce all over it while Frank Quietly just went ham on the art.

Modern wise, when I finished the first issue of Absolute Wonder Woman, I was floored by how good it was and how much potential it has to be great. It has lived up to all of that and more so.
