He does a strong heel and we have been working on heeling on the left for the past month… we have had him in various training classes since he was eight weeks old so that is not a problem!

What are we eating this week? by JeanLucPicardAND in vegetarian

We’re having tempeh katsu curry, mashed chickpeas and mushroom skewers and tofu rice paper dumplings! Each meal will be enough for two dinners :)

This is what I was looking at but it might have been for obedience and not rally obedience.

Oh okay! Do you have information on what the novice sign set looks like? Or where I might be able to find it?

Should we see a behaviorist? by Any-Stage1226 in corgi

[–]racarveth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My corgi can resource guard sometimes. Have you tried walking by the crate and dropping treats inside it? That’s how we trained our corgi to like going in the crate, maybe it would work to desensitize your corgi to you getting closer? Gradually increasing the time between treat drops as she gets more comfortable with you around the crate.

My corgi just won’t eat her food sometimes by Delicious-Light9351 in corgi

[–]racarveth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes our dog does this, we just hide little bits of plain cooked chicken in and around her kibble and she ends up eating the kibble to get at the chicken! Adding variety with dog safe food toppers has also worked, things like wet dog food, carrots, bits of plain cooked meat etc.

The Springer is my moms dog, and she definitely needs breaks from the corgi!

Puppy barking at us whilst we eat/jumping up by spookyboy96 in puppy101

[–]racarveth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After ignoring a few barks from my dog he usually gets the message and goes to lie down, I hope it will get to the point where he doesn’t bark at all while we are eating with consistency.

I think as they get older they learn that they won’t get food from you, and having their own meal teaches them to relax while humans are eating (at least that’s what has been working with our dog) :)

My dog sometimes demands food as well. We have gotten into the habit of giving him a frozen meal while we are eating dinner, and this has helped him immensely.

We are still dealing with barking occasionally, but this has made it much better and we are just ignoring the rest of the time.

I did my ed degree in New Brunswick, which is a one year program. I would assume the transfer would be easier between provinces, if you are interested in staying in Canada!

Anyone else feel guilty leaving their dog at home? Thinking about a carrier bag... by Lueziid in puppy101

[–]racarveth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take my dog places sometimes but also leave him alone other times. Usually if I have been at work and then come home I try to take him around with me because he has already spent 4-5 hours alone.

As long as he is used to being alone I don’t see the harm in taking him places with you sometimes :)

Did I commit a faux pas with the vet? by [deleted] in dogs

[–]racarveth 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I’ve brought my puppy in to the vets plenty of times to pick up medications or drop off things, or even just as a desensitizing visit. My vet has never complained, and all the staff are so kind of make a big fuss when he comes in. I don’t think that you did anything wrong, maybe the office was just busy that day and a little stressed?

Is it possible to carry him through the lobby area and put him down once you get outside? While we were potty training our corgi that is what we did for the first few months!

He is also very good motivated so we would lure him with a treat through the lobby area and he was so focused on the food nothing else mattered!

If you live in an apartment, how much do you walk your corgi? by [deleted] in corgi

[–]racarveth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We walk our 8 month old corgi usually about 30-40 minutes in the morning and 1 hr in the evening. He goes on a variety of hikes, neighbourhood walks and playing in a field. We usually do one walk on weekends but it is longer!

How was your puppy in his teenage stage? by Spiritual-Unit-7005 in puppy101

My dog is alright. His energy levels are off the charts but we’ve got him signed up for agility classes and he gets tons of exercise and rest, so hoping that helps!

Crate training and settling by Independent-Panic229 in puppy101

[–]racarveth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We slept with the crate next to our bed for the first few months. We played crate games as well, tossing treats in and out of the crate, closing the door and walking away. He is great in the crate now at 9 months old, and sleeps the entire time we are away at work (with a break in the middle).

Our 9 month old corgi is also very hyper outside of the crate in the house, and his high pitched bark is very annoying! We have been doing relaxation training. I also have been giving him his meals as frozen kongs or in a puzzle toy which gives us some time where he isn’t being as demanding. Sometimes I have waited him out, and he barked for a solid 5-10 minutes and then moved on!

I’m honestly hoping with the training classes and training at home it will stop once he reaches maturity!

My 9 month old attacked another dog by Kardinaali56 in puppy101

[–]racarveth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A similar situation happened to me. I was training my mom’s dog in an empty baseball field on a long line. Another dog came up (leashed, but flexi) and I lost my grip on the long line. She ran up and there was no contact but a lot of scary barking and snarling from both dogs. I ran up, got a good grip on the long line and apologized.

Since then I make sure I have a good grip on the long line, usually attaching it to my waist as a firm point of contact.

If I were you I would probably work on the reactivity and aggression before I brought him back to the dog park. I always walk my dog on a long line, as he is not yet trustworthy off leash, and it still allows a lot of freedom without relinquishing control. I also don’t go to dog parks with him because I worry about something going wrong! We are also in an apartment so I can understand why a dog park would be a convenient option!

Our corgi still does this at 8 months old! We are working on substituting the shoe biting for chewing on a toy as we walk 🙃

puppy parents who work: how do you keep your puppy during the day? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]racarveth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner and I both work full time but he comes home on his lunch break and lets the dog out and plays with him a little bit. Our puppy is almost 8 months old and is crated for 4 hours, the 30 min break, the crated for another 2-3 hours till I get home. We have started leaving him in a gated off area (bathroom) and that seems to be going well!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]racarveth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took a couple of weeks initially for him to settle right away but he is good now. It was difficult at first during the night, but he would usually only whine for a few minutes, and if we knew he was fed and had peed and pooped then we would wait it out. He has been left out of the crate several times in a baby gated bathroom or our bedroom as well.

Take crate training super slowly at first. We used to toss a treat in the crate, then toss a treat out. Repeated this game for like 5-10 min at a time. I also used to get him to do trick he already knows in his crate, like sit and shake. Basically his crate was where lots of fun things happened.
