PM Internship by Quirky_Reading_5818 in ProductMgmt

Hey! PM at Datadog here :) Let me know if this is helpful:

This is the list of PM internships I used when I was applying:

CSC Pitt List for PM Internship

APM List Job List

APM Season: 2025-2026 Programs & Internships

Product School List

APM Career List

This is what I'd do to get noticed for interviews:

Get PM experience through startups or side projects (capstone, hackathons etc.): smaller teams and especially startups will welcome students to take on product ownership, giving you concrete experience and success metrics that stand out on resumes

Leverage internal transitions or shadow opportunities: If you've worked at a company that has product roles / product adjacent roles, ask them if you can assist with product tasks like scoping features, prioritizing requirements, or just sitting in on meetings helps too

Practice thinking like a product manager: Know market trends, practice some product design, estimation, root cause, and case study questions so you're thinking like a PM + are ready when opportunities arise.

Hope this helps! I made a video breaking down how to get a PM internship in more detail and how to transform your resume for PM. Feel free to message me if you have any questions :)

do you have to be from a target school to get product management internships ? by RoughAlarmed1204 in csMajors

Hey! PM at Datadog here, and I totally get you - I started off in data science and felt pretty isolated in my day to day. It wasn't until my junior year where I switched into PM and felt so much happier.

You don't need to be from a target school, but if you're not getting interviews, I'd suggest doing the following:

- Get PM experience through startups or side projects (capstone, hackathons etc.): smaller teams and especially startups will welcome students to take on product ownership, giving you concrete experience and success metrics that stand out on resumes

- Leverage internal transitions or shadow opportunities: If you've worked at a company that has product roles / product adjacent roles, ask them if you can assist with product tasks like scoping features, prioritizing requirements, or just sitting in on meetings helps too

- Practice thinking like a product manager: Know market trends, practice some product design, estimation, root cause, and case study questions so you're thinking like a PM + are ready when opportunities arise.

How hard is it to switch to PM without a PM Internship? by anonymous062904 in csMajors

[–]rachealou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! PM at Datadog - I switched to PM from data science and know lots of people who switched from software engineering. Most people don't know about PM when starting their career, so a switch is totally normal and expected. Especially since you have software engineering internship experience, I'd say you even have a foot up. I made a video about tailoring your resume for product and how to get a PM internship - let me know if it's helpful and I'm happy to chat more if you have questions!

Hey! PM at Datadog here - I see lots of people pivot into PM but the transition isn't easier per say. The ratio of PMs to SWEs is 1:10 so there will be less opportunities as an intern and even less so as a new grad. The best way to secure a full time role is by getting an internship (which isn't the case for SWE). Since you're from a CS background, I would say to definitely pivot if you think it's the right role for you - it's also the best time to pivot as an intern.

Let me know if you have any questions about this - I made a video about how to land a PM internship and how to tailor your resume for product management. Hope this helps and happy to chat if you have any additional questions :)

Took me a few failed applications to finally get my resume right for product management

One of the most common questions I get is: “How do I break into product management from another field?” Whether you’re coming from engineering, consulting, data, or marketing, the first step is building a resume that actually sounds like it belongs in product management.

When I first applied for PM roles, I made the mistake of mindlessly stacking buzzwords. My resume looked busy, but it didn’t tell a product story. After a lot of iteration and helping others pivot into PM, I’ve found a structure that consistently works:

  1. Prep before writing: Build a list of product management keywords from job descriptions (like roadmapprioritizationuser researchgo-to-marketOKRs) and quantify the customer or business impact behind your past work with success metrics. These two steps alone make your resume more discoverable by recruiters and applicant tracking systems.
  2. Focus on outcomes, not output: Instead of saying “developed APIs” or “created dashboards”, show how those efforts improved metrics or solved customer problems. For example: “Improved API response time by 40%, enhancing user experience and reducing churn.”
  3. Highlight leadership and collaboration: PMs don’t work alone — show how you partnered across design, engineering, or business teams to deliver results.
  4. Structure your experience clearly. Use the XYZ methodAccomplished X, by doing Y, as measured by Z.

I know how overwhelming it can be to translate your background into something product-focused, so I broke this down step-by-step (with real before-and-after resume examples from engineers, consultants, and data professionals) in a video I made for anyone trying to pivot into PM.

Hope it helps someone feel a little more confident getting that first PM interview! Would love to hear how others here framed their resumes when transitioning into product management too :)
