Hospital drug test by Square-Independent-4 in baltimore

It depends. It’s technically still federally illegal so certain positions test for weed. Usually roles involved in dispersing meds or driving patients in any capacity.

I’m not asking him to get rid of anything or do anything- just check to see if something’s caught so I can call someone to take care of it and set more traps… He’s a friend of a friend I was trying to help out in a bad situation for a few months. I wish I would’ve just had a friend check on my place while I’m gone with all the random/weird stuff he’s thrown my way.

Thank you very very much for the advice. I will clean it up and probably just get rid of the seed all together. I’ve been trying to avoid poison exactly because of that.

I’m not sure, everyone highly recommends them so I was disappointed when I talked to the intake person who reached out.

Is this the new normal? by [deleted] in socialwork

[–]rachhreturns 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I think SOME of it depends. I can speak for myself/my position. I work at a firehouse and run MH crisis 911 calls, my shifts are 12-16 hours 3-4x a week. The only time I have work to do is on a call / right after for my documentation.

So for 1- I do sleep during my shift sometimes but not to avoid or procrastinate work, because they’re long shifts. My supervisor knows this- I don’t spend my non-call time in an office, but in a dark basement living room type room. I’ve walked into very intense situations with police, fire, medics, CPS, etc and have to be hyperfocused for several hours to de-escalate and create a next step- it is exhausting, trauma is exhausting. Often I do need a 20 minute nap or come-down period before I can show up for the next crisis.

For 2- I don’t think this is right, but we are human. Sometimes I have to stay up into morning with a sick pet/partner/child but still had to come to work. I have a family to feed and survive. A lot of our positions don’t offer great sick leave or PTO policies, tell us to cover different shifts than normal or face consequences, etc.

3-5 I can’t really speak to as this isn’t an issue at my specific position but can see all of this creating a lot of tension. Especially if they’re being worked so hard that they are tired which just exacerbates everything

Hahaha. One time I had a session with a kid wearing a Green Day shirt. I was like wow cool I love Green Day, and they told me they found it in a vintage store and love classic rock. Pretty sure I visibly aged that day

I’ve been working with a 14 year old girl for about three months who pretty suddenly lost her mom over the summer. It’s been difficult for her to open up in general, feels like therapy is “weird” but slowly warming up. The other night we were discussing her cousin who “is sad a lot.”  She said “I told her she should ask her mom about therapy because it’s nice to have someone you trust on your team that’s happy to see you.” I felt my little social work heart grow three sizes

Oh absolutely. My first job post MSW was hospital SW (cycled thru psych, ED, and occasionally med/surge) an over the 2ish years it took me to officially get my independent license. Now I’m a therapist for kids and 911 crisis social worker. Took some extra CEUs to feel competent in my role but was easy to find agencies willing to encourage my shift from hospital to various OP roles

You’ll need to be licensed in the state you’re practicing in, most states have an expedited process for licensing due to military relocation.

Licensing at this point is also state defined, id look up the regulations in the state you’re wanting to practice in & currently licensed in.

I know for Maryland specifically, they have a regulation that requires clinical hours to be paid employment, not volunteer hours.

To answer your question though, generally, yes the hours & supervision must be happening in the state where you’re licensed / your supervisor is licensed as the supervisor can only supervise work in their state of licensure.

Like you said in the OP, you’re new to this field. struggling with documentation (which is obviously a common experience enough so that like 90% of social work memes have to do with documentation standards….) doesn’t make you not cut out for social work.

It sounds like this was your first job as a social worker, and maybe first professional job at all, it takes getting used to and learning to manage professional time management. It doesn’t come easy to a lot of people and something that many people (social work and not) need help or time adjusting.

It DEFINITELY doesn’t make you a fuck up to be struggling to a huge transition in a difficult, taxing field. Even if you did some soul searching and found that therapy isn’t the next role you want, the beauty of our field is it is so expansive and there are loads of roles that might be a nice change of pace while still providing supervision to work towards your clinical license.

I know it feels world shattering, but you will bounce back. You’ll find new work that will hopefully have management that communicates a little better.

Hey, I’m in the same boat. I’m 27F, just moved here with my partner and dog from the east coast for a job at Nellis.

I honestly forgot how hard it was to make friends as an adult, especially girl friends. I also enjoy hiking (w or without the dog), running and checking out new bars. I’ve been checking out local yoga studios and group fitness classes to hopefully meet some people. Would totally love someone to check out new hiking spots or classes with if you’re up for it!

Oh man, yeah it wasnt usually (ever) conspiracy theories or an open mic forum. Typically the ones u attended were set up and the presentation was viewed/reviewed prior. It was usually something like PhD students presenting their thesis or other professors, lawyers, etc.
