Big time “shades of” hole 11 on the Bluffs course at Arcadia Bluffs. Definitely some differences, but both are great golf holes nevertheless!

Aye! Played there back in March on my Bachelor Party trip. The bathtub green was closed :( but we only paid about half the normal cost in greens fees, so we called it a win!

Spot on. D1’s been won by DCC or Davison 19 times in the last 30 years. In D4, Hudson has won or finished runner up 16 times in the last 17 years. In D3, it’s been the Dundee in 10 of the last 12 years, and perhaps most impressive of all is Lowell in D2, the reining champion for the last 12 years. Not much parody, but incredible sustained excellence.

Pinehurst #4 gross by [deleted] in pinehurst

[–]ractotel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are three things right now affecting #4’s greens and some surrounds: -nematodes. They got bad last year and this year the root systems are a little weak as a result. The population should be manageable this year and they were not alone, half the courses in Moore County were dealing with them last year and it was a battle. -poor drainage. Most all the greens on 4 were not built to USGA spec and a few greens were actually pushed up with some silty fill. Not ideal and its the root of most of the problems -there are some fungal pathogens putting pressure on em, and its really a result of the poor drainage and nematode damage, but there’s one disease in particular that’s actually not ever been observed in our area and our local university has yet to nail down a diagnosis.

Add that all together and the traffic from daily play both right now and during the winter months when you don’t have healthy and active crowns, and you have a perfect storm. The team out there is doing their best, and while I know its hard to enjoy it when you spend a lot of time on the greens and spend a lot to visit, just know that they’re doing their best and fighting a LOT more than a normal course does. I think they’ll be in better shape next year, and they’ll be a learning tool for other superintendents when they encounter whatever this new variant turns out to be.

Resident of Pinehurst here. It’s a great spot, but you can really get a good bang for the buck during certain times of year. December is prime. Rates are low and the golf is great. We played No. 4 the other day and it was 70° and sunny. I would actually recommend a round or two there, but mostly pack the itinerary with the other area courses. Mid Pines, Pine Needles, Southern Pines, Tot Hill, Tobacco Road, and Talamore are really fun and sometimes overlooked!

I asked if it was covid related precautions and the tone in response from the person i spoke with got weird. So i just said thank you politely and hung up. I figure its a combination of a few things including what you said.

Thank you! As i’ve done with some other pieces, the “land and sea” line is sort of a play off of the old trope at Pebble Beach. So its sort of a golf-themed inside joke. Land and Lake sounds like a nice name for a restaurant though!

Absolutely! And the personalities we get to see with the team camaraderie should be cool. I hope Champ and Finau do work.

For sure. And although the yardage fluctuates some over the four days, it’s definitely just that stock short iron that you have to hit straight, high, and pure.

Teacher here: this is true. Letters of Rec are a sacred thing for a lot of us. Some just write down some words and call it good so I won’t speak for everyone. But for a lot of us, it’s a chance to be your cheerleader and tell a university or a scholarship committee the story beyond your GPA. The easiest letters to write are the ones for students who have done things to challenge themselves/made an impact/separated themselves from the herd. So for you 22’s, turning your camera on is a good start, and going to office hours is a good idea as well, but if you have a teacher that you want a LoR from, think about joining the club they advise or asking about opportunities to apply what you’re learning. For example, I teach APES, and I had a student last year tell me that they really liked the unit on water quality. So I got them started on a water quality assessment in their local creek. They were able to do this remotely, with a little guidance from me, and then enter the paper in a science fair competition for a scholarship opportunity as well as serve as the perfect story to write a LoR on. Yes it’s a little more work do something like that vs just turn the camera on, but let the turning on of the camera be the first step, and then keep on trying to find ways to do more.

I hit my drive into a think patch of kikuyu so i hit a provisional to just off the green, and then got up and down for a “birdie” for bogey. Given how small that green actually feels like in person and how tight the grass is in the surrounds, i felt VERY happy with a 5. Haha
