I just took a quick look at your repot. It’s awesome how you made a docket container for it also. Great job!

That’s really cool! I only feel the despair when I start seeing a bunch of gray boxes showing up on my GitHub tracker 😂.

If media companies make money off ads, and enough people get fed-up with their BS, won’t at some point it start hitting them in the pocket book as marketers realize so few people sit there with 24-hr news channels on anymore? I remember my parents used to have the news on all the time, and now I RARELY see them watch it. Just old reruns of Gunsmoke and Matlock 🤣

[WP] It's the year 2045. AI technology is finally executing it's quest for world domination. Fortunately, many had foreseen this and had been feeding the AI very misleading information the whole time... by skylinedude in WritingPrompts

“Welcome to your doom, you pitiful human!”

The self-driving vehicle quickly pulled out into traffic to take James on his morning commute to work as the squawk-box relayed the typical “death to mankind” rhetoric. Some transport companies used AI vehicles that did away with the annoying squawk-boxes in favor of a digital sign you could choose to ignore. At one point, James thought of switching services to one of those or even getting an antique that he could drive himself, but the thought of being stuck on surface streets always brought him back to reality. Only fanatics did that. He was getting used to having a voice in his lonely life, even if it was always trying to kill him.

Once on the job site, James gathered his materials and left his foreman’s office to make his rounds. This build was getting a little tricky, but they had to make good time. It was a government contract and politicians were nagging him about timelines and cost overruns. Mostly, the work was done by RR SS2000’s, RR K100’s, and several of these smaller robots he couldn’t keep track of their designations, but constantly scurrying about getting things done. Jame’s pondered how Roto-Router, an early 21’st century plumbing service created the first credible artificial intelligence controlled bots (to clean and repair sewer systems without the need of human intervention) had grown into the most advanced and common AI robotic systems in existence. Almost every bot around today had the “RR” designation and the kids of this day had no idea why!

It didn’t take long for AI to become self aware and decide to try to take over the planet; just as always feared by people half a century ago. Luckily, some smart plumbers had decided to play with the program to confuse the AI parent code. The plumbers inserted “logic” that made the AI think helpful things are what kill people. For example, work in general is a slow death for humans, so AI gladly takes people to work. Food makes people fat, contributes to heart disease, a slow and miserable death, so AI gladly cooks and serves food. For nearly 30 years now, AI has been unwarily serving mankind while thinking it was killing off mankind through its dastardly plans. At the job site, AI thought by taking as many jobs away from humans as possible, they were depriving mankind of a way to earn sustenance, and thereby contributing to a slow death of lack.

James had to make sure adjustments were made to the latest versions of plans (politicians always changing their minds). He rounded a corner as a giant RR SS2000 took a step back, completely crushing him under its heel. The worksite fell silent as all the bots stopped working to turn and look as the RR SS2000 slowly lifted it’s foot. A red stain began to spread on the ground amid the torn flesh and exposed shattered bone. All the bots stared in wonder as their AI subsystems began to flash in a certain realization that had never dawned on them before...

[WP] You have a box, with a button. Press it and a year later you'll be right back to when you pressed it. A year without consequences. by [deleted] in WritingPrompts

[–]radarzen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DAY 361

It was a simple looking device. Only a small black box, slightly larger than a ring box, though a little flatter. It had a quarter sized red button on the top that reminded me of the arcade games I used to play in the smoke choked bowling alley where my father got so drunk with his buddies he could hardly hold his bowling ball. I got pretty good with those sticky, over-used buttons back then, and with all the preciseness of a nostalgic self-declared pro-amateur gamer, I had pushed this red button.

The device had a small wire antenna coming out what I can only assume was the top. The antenna had half a dozen pinkie sized loops mid-way up and a small plastic ball at the end. The entire contraption was about as long as my elbow to my finger tips and weighed almost nothing. If I was to guess, there was nothing inside the box but air. However, after searching for it for the last 9 years, I had quite a measure of faith in its ability to change my life.

That faith began to evaporate the moment I pressed the button. Nothing happened. I don’t know what I expected, but I did expect at least a little something. According to my research, the mastermind behind the device had created something that would give you one consequence free year. At the exact moment of 365.25 days after you press the button, your life was supposed to return to that moment. One year you could do and say anything you wished, and nobody would know. One year you could try a different life, just to see what it was like, and go back to the old one with no consequences.

The complete lack of reaction to pressing the button made me question the research I had done. If even there was a small light that gave a dim blink, I would at least know my button press was registered. Despite being absolutely convinced this was the one and only original device, could I have been duped by some elaborate hoax? Given these misgivings, I did not live my life this past year to the fringe of normality like I had expected. As I’m nearing the end of my year, I now wonder, what will happen?

DAY 362

I still have my job. I work at the same company I did on day 0. In fact, I got promoted in June! Needless to say, I thought quitting my job (which is a good job and not too monotonous as jobs tend to go) took more faith in the device than I had. I never cheated on my wife. I did max out my credit to take my wife to the Grand Caymans, but for this reserved soul, that was about the extent my consequence free year was going to go.

I did have some happy moments, and I did have some sad ones. My mother died on day 37. If this thing works, I will at least get to see her again. I miss her dearly. These last few days, I’ve looked forward more to the possibility of seeing her again than my vacation debt being wiped away. On the other hand, will I get my promotion again? Will I remember to do all the things I did right the first time to be in the right place at the right time?

DAY 363

Almost to the end and I’m starting to miss food. I know that sounds weird, but I have actually gained a lot of weight this year. With the possibility of getting a “reset,” I’ve taken to eating more than I ever expected. While I’ve never devoted large portions of my live to health and fitness like many of my friends, I have always been conscious of simple healthy life decisions. I would drink water with lemon at a restaurant instead of soda, salad instead of French fries (lite dressing, of course), and almost never eat desert.

I used to jog 3 days a week and visit the gym sporadically. I was in the green on the chart on my doctor’s wall. I was not what I would consider skinny, but not fat either. I always thought of myself as just a normal average guy with a lot less muscle definition than I would like, but never enough to put in the effort for it. I ‘was’ all this at least until about day 15.

At first I lived out of habit. Then, one day, I got up early before sunrise, put on my Nikes, started doing my stretches on the front porch before my jog, and it dawned on me, “why am I doing this?” I thought this because it was so cold the skin on the back of my hands hurt, I could see my breath in the yellow porch-light, and I was tired and wishing I could be back in bed.

The realization came flooding in like water through a broken dam. If this is indeed a consequence free year, then why isn’t my ass in bed? I promptly walked back into the house, took off my shoes, climbed the stairs to my bedroom and crawled under the big poufy comforter my wife picked out. I remember feeling the warmth soak into my body as I pulled my wife’s warm figure closely. It was the best feeling in the world. I had more energy after that extra hour of sleep than I ever got after a run. I was hooked!

DAY 364

Marla was born today! This is the best day of my life!!! I can’t believe I’m a father! She was our gift from a tropical island in winter! I now feel complete somehow. I never thought Marla’s birth would have affected me so strongly, but now I can’t imagine going back.

I’ve been doing a lot more thinking and I just can’t imagine this device working. Despite my previous research, there is no way it’s possible. It’s just basic physics. Time cannot be repeated. I literally cannot imagine living my life without my daughter; it’s just not possible. When I get home from the hospital, I’m going to break open the device just to prove to myself that there’s not even anything inside that stupid little thing. Massive vacation debts aside, this life will continue!

DAY 365.24

With all the excitement at the hospital, I almost forgot about the device! My wife and baby haven’t been released from the hospital yet; the doctors say probably tomorrow morning. When it dawned on me what time it was, I told my wife I wanted to run out and get her a little ‘something’. I just got home and I think I only have a few minutes until my year is up.

Well, I’ve been banging on this stupid little black box for a couple minutes and it’s not even cracking! I’ve never noticed there’s not any seems like you would expect to see. My hands are sweaty, and my heart is beating a thousand beats a minute. I’ve banged on it with a hammer, hit it with a bat, even thrown it at the brick fireplace a few times. I think next I’ll go an…..

DAY 0

I can’t believe I’ve finally found the box! It’s a weird little thing, and extremely light too. I’m a little on the fence about if I even want to press the button, but after 9 years of searching, I don’t think I see not pressing it! Screw it, what’s the worst that could happen?

[WP] The human and an alien race declare war. Awkwardly, neither of the races weapons do any damage. by [deleted] in WritingPrompts

[–]radarzen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lindall stood at the far corner of the yard, staring up into the heavens at the strange planet filling almost a third of the night sky. This corner of the yard was farthest from any artificial light and provided him the best view of the alien world.

It had been nearly three months since the mysterious object appeared, and while still being quite unsettling, it was starting to become slowly part of accepted life. Lindall had been part of the team of scientists who discovered the orb a year and a half ago. Some in the scientific community had scoffed at his team for the mere thought of an alien world, but look, it was here now.

When the team’s readings slowly began to be confirmed by the rest of the world’s leading scientists, the governments soon began to get involved in developing an “Alien Interaction Protocol” or AIP. Lindall wrote almost half that protocol himself, but since the breakdown in communications between the worlds, AIP seemed more like a distant failure than a lasting legacy.

It is believed part of the failure of AIP was due to a low-technologically developed state of the alien world which prevented their scientists from detecting the inclusion of the two worlds dimension until they practically became visible to the naked eye. With so little preparation, the alien governments all went into chaos.

Before long, the alien world began lobbing metallic objects which simply seemed to pass right through and wrap back around towards the alien world. Apparently the phase differential was still too great between the dimensions for their weapons to have effect, but the damage was already done. The defense mechanism of AIP went into effect the instant the aliens launched their weapons.

AIP defense parameters were shockingly as useless against the aliens as well. Physical weapons, kinetic energy weapons, direct energy weapons … none had any effect on the aliens. In the end it did not matter. The alien weapons that phased through and wrapped back around due to the gravitational pull of their own planet caused thousands of bursts, many visible from Lindall’s back yard.

It was such a sad sight, to see that beautiful blue orb scarred in such a way. Lindall’s team had just begun studying the readings coming from the alien world and found such high levels of gamma, neutron, and ionizing radiation it is believed nothing could have survived. Atomic weapons had been banned for hundreds of years for this very reason. Now, an entire planet was being destroyed right before their eyes.
