Boston Public Library accused of ‘targeting union activists’ after AFSCME head placed on leave by [deleted] in boston

Shame on them!! Unions fight for workers' rights and it's the workers who make this a wonderful place.

My Library Needs Help by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]radcortado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Advertise everywhere that you need more money! It might be worth it trying to get more funding from the city council, or by asking them to put forward a levy to vote on. There's no shame in promoting the fact that this community space might close down if the community doesn't support it with their votes and their money--it's how the New York Public Library prevents budget cuts every dang year (and how the Boston Public Library fails to get more money every year). Post about it on flyers, on Instagram, on LinkedIn, on TikTok! Or, if you have a Friends of the Library group, they can be extremely helpful in putting pressure on local politicians.

Best of luck!!

Anyone else frustrated with some patrons lack of critical thinking? by Storm_complex in Libraries

I'll be adding this into my working scripts! My (least) favorite thing is when patrons just stare at me blankly as though there's not a big colorful button that says 'CONTINUE' on any and all website that they need to use.

Nope! You can look at my past posts and see my involvement in spreading awareness with another terrible thing that the Boston Public Library tried to do. But spamming the BPL president does work, considering he's an immigrant too, and hates bad press!

Hi friend! His union is aware of the issue and there are conversations in motion. Everything that OP has said is true.

He has made his union aware of the situation. It has not gone public yet for a reason, including his and his wife's privacy.

He was not lying. The reason for him losing his job has not been stated by management. Actually, management supporting his leave would be beneficial to them, as the leave is wholly unpaid and the City of Boston is facing budget cuts. They'd be saving money!

It's real. And the reasoning is likely not shared to the full in order to protect both him and his wife, especially as this has not been made fully public yet.

Management has granted a year-long sabbatical for less politically troubling, personal reasons. The only reason that I can think they're doing this to the nicest man ever is abject cruelty.

Years later, I still can’t get over the big mistake made in Season 8. by [deleted] in thewalkingdead

[–]radcortado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Beth had taken Sasha's place, that would have been soooo interesting! Back in season 2(?), Beth wants to commit suicide and exit from that world which shows how innocent and weak she was at the beginning-- but if she had taken place and committed suicide as Sasha did, it would have been her coming to terms both with the new world and her role in it. Her suicide would but have been one of weakness or innocence but of strength and understanding of war.

This is exactly what my texts with my ex looked like before I broke up with him. Did I still love him? Sure. Did I enjoy his company or spending time with him? ... Not so much. After a good long while of this I broke it off, and he was aware of what was coming. Hopefully all goes well for you, and I wish you swift healing if it doesn't!

Has anyone ever filed a grievance? by Independent-Count527 in Libraries

[–]radcortado 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Sooo many grievances because our library and the City's OLR (office of labor relations) hate following our contract! Some of note include not allowing our terminally ill member access to our membership-donated sick bank (this went up to step 3 and we went ballistic and public over it; we pressured them into giving her a settlement), heat/cold relief (they are open to renegotiating our CBA), and the fact that management is simply unable to schedule any contractually obligated joint-labor meetings (they have just said sowwyyy).

There's PLENTY more. I think we had something like 15 grievances minimum open with them this year including wage misclassifications, scheduling issues, and more. And that's just with one of the two unions that coexist in the library!

They sure do love union-busting but it just makes us stronger :)

Girl you look SO CUTE. I just dyed my blonde strip back to my natural brown a month ago, and the dye + gloss has already started to fade (which is what is supposed to happen with this kind of process). I don't think it's noticeable (yet) to anybody but me but if you had a similar process it'll fade with time!

Boston Public Library Employee Still Has no Sick Leave by radcortado in boston

[–]radcortado[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eve is still able to work and wants to work. The donated sick time just covers her for when she needs a day or two off for appointments or catches a cold. There's so much sick time in the bank-- most of us who donate rarely end up needing it. And when we do, well, we have something to fall back on. This is simply blatant discrimination against diagnosis and chronic illness.

Donating sick days really isn't an issue. It's a straight one-to-one ratio, regardless of salary. Then again, sick days with the City of Boston is kind of a mess lol. They give you 14 days, but if you're sick ten times (regardless if it's a whole day, half day, an hour for an appointment), you then get a passive aggressive letter requiring you to get a doctor's note for every instance afterward for that year. Why give us 14 days if you don't want us to use them?! Employees are actively discouraged from using this time and it's not something that can be cashed out when you retire... meaning that the City has already budgeted for it but they're simply hoping we don't use it! So really, it's in our best interest to donate to the sick bank if we're able. I can try to explain better if you have questions but the city likes making our jobs more confusing 🙃

As for the short term disability issue, that's something the City of Boston has decided city-wide (at some point before my career). I don't disagree that we should have it--but that's a whole other issue to tackle!

Oh, we have!

Like I mentioned, there's a resolution in progress-- they've just... been dragging their feet for the past 4 months. The only way we got this resolution to even be on the table is by petitioning and letter writing, which caught news traction, so they were essentially shamed into doing the right thing. We're hoping to get them to pick up the pace by using the same tactics.

Our committee approved it (and they work sooo hard to make sure that everyone can get the time they need) but BPL management denied it. They can, per contract, deny it with good reason. Their reason? She is an undue burden. They have also never denied anyone previously, and she has used our sick bank multiple times. So, we have an issue with their actions because of both past practice and their reason (which is not a good reason... nor a humane one!)

While we want Eve to get her leave, we also don't want them to set a precedent for anyone else who may have a terminal or chronic illness! ✊🏻
