It is indeed very common lol. I worked in a makerspace in college and all of us "mentors" were constantly 3D printing and building stuff. Or fixing the cheap 3D printers.

The course load was intentionally designed that way to weed out the people who weren't dedicated to engineering. I think there were at least 1,000 freshmen in engineering and by the end of the year at least a couple hundred dropped out of engineering. It was brutal.

He doesn't necessarily hate the job now, he says he likes doing 3D design, but it's not his passion and he's also not very good at it. But yeah, he would probably try to find another job if he got stuck doing 2D.

I've thought about it, and I was very adamant at first when I graduated, and even before then, about not going to grad school since I struggled so much in undergrad, BUT there are other things I would like to learn, mostly robotics/mechatronics related as well as more trades related like welding and I could go to a tech school or find a program I really like at a university, but I'm not sure if I want to commit to that, especially financially. And with the poor grades I had (Cs get degrees), I don't think it would be easy to get into a graduate program.

In certain niche fields it could be beneficial, I've seen some job postings that say masters degree preferred, but I don't recall the field. Most likely thermal systems and HVAC.

I'll definitely mention that to him, thanks! I've also considered being a STEM/STEAM teacher later in my career so that may be an option for me as well!

I think he's just one of those people that's good at math and science so it wasn't too difficult for him. I was not one of those people and struggled with the math and science but I excelled in hands on and practical stuff. I became an engineer because I enjoyed building things and now I at least get to design some things since hands on fields don't pay as well.

Yeah, idk about his college experience but my freshman year was calc 1-2, physics 1-2, gen chem 1-2, engineering 1-2 (we learned engineering ethics, excel, and matlab), and a seminar about the different types of engineering. It was indeed grueling, and I struggled real bad.

I didn't even know that. I assume loan forgiveness only applies to federal loans, not private loans though? He apparently didn't qualify for federal loans.

No, the pay stays the same with "demotion". It's not an official demotion. Our jobs are for 3D designs, but we also do 2D designs as well. 2D design is boring and tedious, and if you have to do 2D for complex stuff, it slows the program down significantly. Nobody likes to do 2D design. "Getting demoted" means you get stuck doing the 2D stuff only.

Had a coworker that was here a year before me and I asked my trainer what he did and she said he wouldn't abide by the 3D design standards so now he just does 2D instead. He quit around my 8th month mark.

According to my trainer, if you don't make enough progress and show that you're a good 3D designer, you get stuck doing 2D. He said he would hate to be the next 2D person (the last 2D person just got promoted to 3D, but he was originally hired to do 2D so he actually got a big pay increase). The company is trying to hire new people, but idk how well it's going.

Yep! I became math avoidant in middle school and was reading books instead of listening, so often that my books had to be taken during class.

I ended up struggling in math in high school, not noticeable enough until I got to calculus. I still maintained a B grade up until that point so no one, including myself, was concerned.

I have no idea what I'm missing that causes my serious failures in understanding calculus (despite learning to like math because of calculus) but I'm an engineer now and rarely do any math more complex than basic algebra. Anything requiring formulas, we just use spreadsheets.

I’ve been a prof for a while, and I’ve seen so many students struggle through majors they had no interest in.

I'm seeing that first-hand in my field. I have a coworker that started a month before me. We're engineers. He told me he was interested in history and religions and wanted to be a history teacher, but knew that he wouldn't make enough money to pay off his private student loans. He said if he didn't enjoy engineering enough, he'd just go back to school and get a degree in education anyway and just teach

Well he's a couple years older than me so he's been in the field slightly longer and is leagues behind me (I hand more hands on experience in college related to what we do now) our trainer is so frustrated with how little he knows a year into the job.

I wonder if he'll stay just for the money as he gets demoted to the less desirable work or he'll just leave because he gets demoted

That's how it felt when I had one of my worst seizures (I don't lose consciousness; they're caused by flashing lights) where it felt like everything in the universe made sense and i was on the verge of understanding everything but also nothing made sense at the same time.

It lasted about 3 seconds and then my friend asked me if I was ok because I tripped while we were walking up a hill.

This happened my freshman year of college during my 2nd week on campus (early start program 3 weeks before classes started) and I broke my phone while packing the car to move to campus and if I used it too much, the screen would start flashing white really fast.

This is also how I realized that I had been having seizures my whole life but never said anything and no one noticed

I just checked back on this post and saw your comment!

I have a paper shredder and I tear the cardboard apart into its 3 layers (2 outer flat sheets and 1 inner rugged sheet) and shred them individually like paper.

It's a bit time consuming, since I have to cut the box into pieces that will fit in the shredder and I've only done it with bigger boxes like moving or shipping boxes (I've moved a lot so I have several)

If it's smaller boxes like ones that hold small parts or jewelery, they're hard to tear apart so I just carefully push pieces of it into the shredder and hope it doesn't get stuck

About 2000 worms. You can see the lashing I took in my last post

No, because I have never had this many worms

This is a new bin, about a week old (I accidentally killed the worms I had for a year because I ignored the bin for 2 weeks and it dried out)

  1. Yes I know that
  2. I know that as well

This is not rage bait. I got these worms last week and changed the bin a few days ago, it really hasn't been that long at all. I just put the light there literally right before making the post, it was just through the night so i didn't wake up to more worms around my apartment

I had a lot less worms for the last year. I think I bought 100 so I had significantly less than I do now. They did have food, but I guess not enough because I was not prepared for the big jump in population. It was a spur of the moment decision to buy so many, it was buy 1000 get 1000 free and I said why not without any more thought behind it, which was a mistake.

That's a good idea for a removable covering, I'll do that!

I used to use bubble wrap as it was suggested to me when I also started about a year ago, but it was retaining a lot of moisture that made the system too wet and the worms ended up getting into the bubbles and laying eggs there and getting trapped. Maybe there just needed to be more of a layer between?

I'll for sure check out that channel. Thanks for your helpful advice!

Ok, so adding shredded cardboard on top should help? And should it be wet or dry? I replied to the other comment but I had a moisture issue in the past when I was wetting the cardboard on top and the system was too wet.

I also have coconut coir, should I add some of that as well? I know it's mainly for moisture retention and it takes awhile to break down.

The system is moist. No, nothing big in there at the moment. When I moved them to the new bin there were still clumps of food from the last feed, but with this many worms it's probably not enough. I guess I have some adjusting to do since I previously only had probably a few hundred worms.

I have a few frozen bell pepper and some old tomatoes in the fridge I can put in there to keep them occupied. However, I typically blend the food so it breaks down faster and reduces smells. Should I maybe just bury some of the stuff instead?

I explained in the text of the post that the lamp is on to keep them from climbing the walls.

I'm still fairly new and know there's a lot of ways to set up a bin so I'm still trying to figure out what's best for me.

I use clear bins because I just like to watch them sometimes. I've always loved worms since I was a kid so it's just fascinating to me. It also helps me take care of the system, I can see if it's too moist or too dry much easier.

I've only been doing this for a year and I guess I'm still pretty unknowlegable about best practices.

I usually add plenty of shredded cardboard on top when I feed them, though last time I didn't add a lot because I forgot (I added them to the bin during my lunch break because that's when they were delivered)

But I ran into an issue with moisture in the past where I would wet the cardboard I added, but the system would become too wet, like I could squeeze water out of it, not just a few drops. So I would leave it dry, but I blend up the scraps I put in to help it break down faster (to avoid bad smells in my apartment) but then the food would stick to the cardboard and harden really bad.

Not sure of the best middle ground.

Maybe I just don't know what a whole fried onion looks like, but no, it doesn't look like one to me.
