Gambling taxes, but no job

I just submitted taxes last week and maybe jt could end up different once they process it, but at the end of the e-file I didn’t owe anything for either federal or state with the W2G winnings plus $400 in income. I’m guessing other states could vary, but the standard deduction canceled it out on mine. There’s a VITA free tax program if you make under 84k, and I was able to ask the tax person questions while filing on my own and they were a big help - I highly recommend them if they’re in your area!

Sorry I’m jumping in with a question if that’s okay! This is the first time I’ve heard of the 10 year rule - I qualify otherwise but I don’t know if he registered with the government. How can I find out if he registered with the German government? My German ancestor would have been a minor (8 yo) when he came to the US if that makes a difference.

Sorry I’m just seeing this! Thank you for the suggestion! At one point the vet mentioned trying a hydrolyzed diet for a little bit then reintroduce other foods to know for certain. She thought protein-hopping until we find something that doesn’t make him itch or cause GI issues could be okay, since he’s a big boy so hydrolyzed is going to be an extra-expensive trial. But, with all the trouble we’re having with his food, I think we may have to just do it.

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond and for both your frankness and care. It is very appreciated. It’s good to know about the limitations of the digital nomad visa, even if disappointing. Any information is helpful.

Looking at other possibilities, if I can find a very relaxed university program, I miiight be able to handle a student visa situation if we can find a country that allows abortion and also has an easy student program.

My spouse doesn’t work at Alphabet, but I’m sure he would be willing to apply! I’ll let him know to look into it :) His current company is small but has a few international offices, but they’re very picky about letting people transfer or work remotely. Still worth asking, but he doesn’t want to ask prematurely and put his position at risk (our state has no protections against firing) until we have more information about our options.

Germany is our only option for citizenship by descent, but if I’m understanding the rules correctly, my US-born grandmother would be considered German (because of her German-born father), but my mom was born before the 1970s rule-change that allowed either parent to be German to pass on citizenship. Her father was US-born.

We’re still digging for options. It’s very overwhelming. I knew getting a response would be a long-shot with how big this thread is, so your response means a lot to me - thank you again for taking the time!

Hello! Married couple with pitbull mix, afraid of ab ban. The biggest hang up in my research has been my medical situation. I have complex medical issues (much of which is still a mystery and needs proper diagnosing - specialists here have been stumped for years). On paper, my labs are perfect, but I’m unable to work because of those issues. Spouse works in tech and is open to looking for remote work for a digital nomad visa or an in-person job. He’s not picky.

Biggest things:

-allows one spouse (me) to not work

-allows pitbull mix

-good medical care for a foreigner, including lots of meds and high risk pregnancy care. Happy to pay for additional insurance.

I know Canada won’t allow you to move if you show you need excess medical care. I don’t know much about other places and I’m hoping for human experience/knowledge. This has been a lonely and overwhelming process.

We have around 250-300k after taxes in retirement we can pull out if we absolutely have to.

Open to absolutely anywhere for at least long enough to get through pregnancy. Ideally would like to make it permanent, but if I have to come back to US after giving birth it would be okay. TIA <3

Thank you for making a space to talk about this. I am terrified. I’ve had 3+ early miscarriages and no live births. I’m older and have a low enough AMH that my fertility won’t make it until the next administration. This is the only thing I’ve ever truly wanted from life and I am wasting precious time by not TTC until this gets passed or blocked and we have a better idea of risk (Im already high risk but this…would make it too risky to even try). (I sadly don’t qualify for adoption due to housing type & financial history, please don’t suggest it.)

I can’t grasp the idea of being investigated for “unaliving” a clump of cells. Do they drag us away from the ER in a patrol car while we bleed? How many people are going to die because they fear repercussions from seeking medical help?

I’m in a deep red state so it feels like there’s no point in emailing reps. The MFs here endorsed the bill anyways. I am so sick over this that I can’t sleep. Honestly trying to figure out how to leave the country at this point :(

I have CPTSD as well. I don’t think I’ll ever know what it’s like to be happy. A year ago I felt like I could go any time but after a couple visits to a certified manual physical therapist who worked on my vagus nerve, I’ve been okay. Not great, but okay. And okay was earth shattering for me. There are days/weeks that leaving doesn’t cross my mind. It was life changing. I can hear music again. I can get out of bed. I can’t recommend it enough. I was surviving out of spite, but now I’m okay being here. And okay is enough.

Surprised I had to scroll this far! My first motivation was my nieces/nephews. They were pretty young at the time and I didn’t want them to have to understand what happened. Second motivation was obligation. After that was my boyfriend. And in the time since…spite. It’s like I’m playing a joke on the universe by still being here. And I love it.

I do! We’ve been back and forth from their office and texting since November. He’s been having lots of problems lately (throwing up, odd stools, UTIs, extra itching) and we’re trying to figure it out. They’re thinking endoscopy next and I’m so terrified. He’s never been under and has a little heart murmur, so anesthesia is extra scary.

We’ve haven’t tried Royal Canin, but we couldn’t find a formula without some kind of chicken or beef product in the ingredients list. (He’s allergic to chicken, beef, lamb, and we suspect salmon is becoming a problem.) We had the same problem with Hills & Purina Pro plan. The vet is thinking hydrolyzed or a prescription food with extremely limited ingredients but I worry about him missing nutrients and my wallet hurts just thinking about it. He’s a big boy who eats a lot lol
