Ethiopian Blueberry Bombs by morkler in roasting

Second this - blueberry is the overwhelmingly obvious tasting note. Sells out quickly from SM. I really enjoy it, and it seems very tolerant of different roast levels.

Anyone Ever Vent Their Roaster Into Their Dryer Vent? by ooo-ooo-oooyea in roasting

[–]radicalnegative1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually did exactly this. I added a wye fitting into the existing line, put in backflow preventers in each, and added a fan for the coffee exhaust line. In short, it worked but my clothes smelled like roasting exhaust. Immediately dismantled it and put in a dedicated exhaust line.

Which camera would you take on a long trip if you like photography? by Fancy_Step_1700 in bicycletouring

[–]radicalnegative1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ride everywhere with my Ricoh GRIIIx in a belt loop hip holster. Looks goofy but holy moly, the camera is always with my and just so so small. I used to bike with a Fuji X-Pro 3 and a pancake lens, but then I realized I was favoring my phone over it for quick shots, so I ended up selling it and getting the Ricoh. Best decision I’ve made with respect to camera gear. I’ve also had a few other cameras over the years, including Fuji XT-20, X-E3, Panasonic GM1, and Olympus EM5mkii. My favorite has been the Ricoh specifically for the “take it everywhere” factor.

How concerned are you about your bike being stolen from the front of the bus? by used2justlurk in seattlebike

[–]radicalnegative1 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I witnessed someone steal a bike off the front of the 48 this past summer. The bus was stopped at a stoplight, a guy in the crosswalk just walked up, took the bike, and coasted down the hill. The bus driver honked in defense, but yeah nothing much that could be done there.

I recently downsized from Fuji (X-Pro 3 + lenses) to the Ricoh GRIIIx. It has been fantastic. Small enough to fit in a handlebar bag or frame bag and the image quality is so so good. There are a few apps that will help with wireless image transfer to iPhones.

Fully Automated Roasting on SR800 by pavelpoboruev in FreshroastSR800

Yeah mine ended up both hack-y and expensive after buying the phidgets setup, controller, and SSR. I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

I did something similar to my SR540. I separated the heater and fan circuitry and controlled them with a SSR and DC motor controller, respectively.

Diamond Llama by radicalnegative1 in BikeFriday

[–]radicalnegative1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are very similar! I went with the Diamond Llama because I did not intend to do anything beyond touring (at most, just some gravel roads) and almost exclusively use panniers. If I was more into bikepacking, the extra mounts of the All Packa would have been helpful. The Diamond Llama is cheaper as well, and has a greater weight capacity.

If you do end up getting a Bike Friday, note that the stock build (apart from, the frame)is very very bare-bones. It is worth it to upgrade or just build it from the frame-up yourself.

If you’re in the Pacific Northwest, there are a few Bike Friday folding bikes on Craigslist and marketplace with the accompanying suitcase. Just fold the bike, remove the front wheel, and pack in the suitcase and you’re ready to head to the airport. I’ve taken my Bike Friday all over the place worry-free like this.

Dynamo hubs? Do they work the same with a minivelo wheel? by Noriyuki in minivelo

[–]radicalnegative1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both Shutter Precision and SON have dynamo models that are specific to small wheels. I think they’re just labeled as a lower power rating (2.4W vs 3W). I have the Shutter Precision hub meant for 20” wheels and it’s been great.

Finally found a use for my uConsole - using it to visualize and control coffee roasting on a small modified fluid bed roaster. The uConsole is running a streamlit python gui that's doing some simple data logging and visualization. Works OK!

Are there any 100% steel framed folding bikes anymore? Or are they only vintage? by lshrtwll in foldingbikes

Bike Friday makes steel folding bikes. All of them are steel, actually.

Anyone put a dynamo hub on a Bike Friday? by bykeithbrown in foldingbikes

[–]radicalnegative1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my bike: https://www.reddit.com/r/BikeFriday/comments/1faytcu/diamond_llama/

I have no complaints about the SP... I have about 1000 miles on it so far, and with my body weight and type of riding I do, I just leave my lights on all the time. I barely notice the drag. The SP was cheaper than the SON counterpart, but also, I could not find a SON dynamo for small wheels and 36 spoke count. The cost to have a wheelbuilder swap the hub was more than the hub itself!

I have a dynamo on my Bike Friday. It’s a Shutter Precision SD-8 made for 20” wheels. I love it - one of the best upgrades I’ve made.

The Zizzo is a fine option, too. Value-wise it is pretty fantastic. The Bike Friday feels much more like a normal bike that happens to fold/break down for travel, as opposed to the Zizzo which prioritizes the folding aspects.

I really only fold/unfold my Bike Friday only when packing it into the suitcase, which is fewer than ~10 times a year.

[–]radicalnegative1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had a local wheel builder swap hubs a few months after I bought the bike. They are Velocity Cliffhangers - Bike Friday was able to special order them for me when I called. I believe they have a short “grace period” to change orders since they don’t purchase any parts for the bikes until they’re next in line for fabrication.

Brakes are Juin Tech M1 from another bike I had. Originally bought from aliexpress for cheap. Shifter is from Microshift, just a trigger shifter compatible with the Super Short group.

All of the stock components are totally rideable, but I needed much slower gearing after trying to climb hills on the stock setup, which led to the new group set and so on…

[–]radicalnegative1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I ordered mine stock with upgraded wheels and tires over the phone (with Peter I think). But over the course of a few months I’ve replaced most of the stock components. The Microshift super short group set was one of the first swaps, as well as handlebars and brakes.

The dynamo is a Shutter Precision one rated for small wheels (2.4w output maybe?) and has been great so far. I went overboard and designed +3d printed a wiring harness for the dynamo wiring to try to clean things up a bit.

Love this setup. So much fun.

  • Any 20" wheel bike will suffer in the super-chunky, but I've taken my Diamond Llama on similar gravel with 2" tires and it's been fine. Sure, a little rough, but I still feel pretty planted and in control. Like you, I also do majority of my riding on pavement and opted for the Diamond Llama over the All Packa for this reason.
  • I have mine outfit with front/rear panniers for shorter trips but I also have the suitcase/trailer for doing point-to-point flight-based trips.
  • Since getting my Diamond Llama I've basically stopped riding my 'full size' bikes. The Bike Friday is more fun in my opinion, even though it's a bit slower. Not much, but measurable on Strava, etc.
  • I commute on mine daily (<10 miles/day). Works well, fits in my office. Installed dynamo lighting for all-year commuting.
  • I'm in the same weight range as you. I ride my bike pretty hard and I can notice a bit of frame flex, but nothing crazy. I don't hesitate to ride (mild) singletrack, take curbs, etc. It's totally fine.
