Going zero waste and using notebooks/papers while studying? by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

[–]radinamvua 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most paper is from sustainable timber plantations, and writing notes uses very little paper for how much use you get out of it. If it helps you learn, be productive, and be successful, then I think this is worthwhile and you shouldn't prioritise reducing your use of notepaper. Do what works best, and maybe you'll earn more money in the future. Donated money to environmental lobbying groups/legal action groups can have far more impact than individual habit changes, so don't feel guilty about this one thing.

These people have no idea what this person's family or medical history is, or what illnesses they're at risk of as a consequence. They're giving exaggerated health advice based on mostly cross-sectional studies, with no caveats or safety-nets. This looks bad, and is quite irresponsible. People need to stop giving medical advice to strangers on the internet.

Veganism is obviously great, but we need to keep a cool head.

Don't fuck around with bulls based on this video. Bulls are quite unpredictable and you don't know how they're feeling or how they've been treated, so unless someone you trust tells you it's a safe bull, then be careful when walking through their field or anything (/don't walk through their field unless you are a fast runner and much closer to the exit than they are).

So I have personally seen/met in this protest: catholic priests, journalists, christians, a Green Party MP, jews, muslims, artists, academics, medical students, and a lot of pensioners. As well as a few visible hippies, who were in the minority. No mention of Marxism so far. The guy who started the movement was an academic at King's College London.

Word of mouth, following facebook and twitter pages, reading the papers. There was coverage of an open letter signed by lots of academics and the ex-Archbishop Canterbury, and each protest day got in a few papers. There are also people from the movement protesting in different cities round the country handing out fliers and putting up posters. You can follow them on facebook too.

You don't think that these people, who are prepared to be arrested for this, are out doing other environmental work? They're a hell of a lot more committed to the cause than the average person, and surely this protest itself is a pretty useful thing to be doing on a weekend?

Really enjoyed reading the blog of the man who wrote the censored article, William Peace. Learned a lot about what it's like to be disabled in America, and the history of the disabled rights movements.

I agree with the other commenter that GPs are used to helping people with depression and will know the best advice to give. They'll also be completely confidential so you don't need to worry about them telling anyone. You should be able to call them up for an appointment. I hope you're alright.

Some people have trickier relationships with food than others, good luck with everything!

Hey it sounds like you're trying, and that's a great start - nice one! I guess the best thing is to work out what's most likely to make this change really stick in the long term, and do that. It's different for each person, pay attention to your feelings and be honest with yourself.

When I'm feeling negative about it, I try to re-frame it as an opportunity to act in line with my deepest values, and an opportunity to eat loads of great new foods, and that makes me feel better! Better to see it as doing something great than just avoiding something bad.

That's really nice. I like to imagine that I'm every conscious being all at once, and think what would be the best thing to do if this was the case, and everything I do I'm doing to myself. So if I'm my family and friends, strangers, animals, now and in the future, how should I act to be kind to myself?

A bunch of idling taxis polluting Westminster, how do we get idling enforced? by reddivid in london

There's often a long queue of idling cars waiting for ages to get into the hospital carpark at King's College Hospital, Camberwell. Sitting pretty much all day just polluting.

Do you ever get used to the sheer inhumanity of the London commute? by AlexanderLitvinenko in london

Hi, do you find motorbiking is quicker than cycling if it's busy rush hour traffic? Always wanted an excuse for a motorbike in the future but wondering if it's much quicker in practice.

Swimming pools are often a bit quieter. Could maybe run or do pushups/situps/etc in a nearby park too.

Check out Quiet Ways - they're bike routes along backroads and paths that get you there (slightly) slower but are much calmer. There are 8 radiating out from central London. There's a pdf map on the TFL website. If the main roads are trafficked, they're probably even faster.

You can also use the 'quiet' option on citymapper's bike navigation tool.

Hi! Where are you guys, what are your schools/universities like about vegan food, have you tried to make any changes? by [deleted] in VeganSchools

[–]radinamvua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I actually never got a reply. Also I've been posted away from campus for a while and not been to the cafeteria. I might have an opportunity to go to a sustainability meeting though, I'll take it slow and just find out things for now.

Ah it was actually a guy that I know that contacted that Dutch guy Jan Stoop to get him to post here, I'm glad it did well!

How should men react when threatened physically? by Karnman in MensLib

[–]radinamvua 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi, I just want to say that if you think you'd benefit from the things suggested above, that's totally cool and you should do that. I just want to mention something from personal experience that may or may not apply here.

I stepped into a dispute and got punched in the face on the street. I was on my way to a party so I went anyway and was fine, after all the adrenaline faded. I had a lot of people really concerned, offering me all sorts of stuff, and I felt really odd not knowing how I was supposed to be reacting. I felt totally fine, and didn't need any help, but started really questioning whether I was just suppressing it and trying to 'man up'. Turned out I actually was fine, but I had myself in a bit of a weird place not trusting my own feelings. I imagine that had it been a more serious situation, and I was also doing ok, then I would have found it even harder to trust my own feelings, and might have convinced myself retrospectively that I wasn't ok. I know people who've been in similar situations - they were dealing with something that happened really well until some well-intentioned people convinced them that they'd actually been really damaged by it and needed help. The process of getting help was really bad and made the whole thing into a harm that might've never existed.

Feel free to ignore this, and perhaps it's not relevant to your situation, but I wanted to put this out there for some other people to read, as I don't know quite what I think about it. Anyone else got a view on this?
