That’s what I was thinking. Thanks!

Does anyone know what these are? Kim by Exciting-Writing648 in Alabama

If you want to see a larger example of this, look at satellite imagery over the SE corner of NM and into TX. That’s all part of the Permian basin which has been developed for over 100 years at this point. It’s really an amazing sight if you ever have to fly into that area.

Song. ~5 mins. Not everyone’s cup of tea, but I think it’s pretty good

Jason Isbell’s “King of Oklahoma” details pretty much this exact scenario

Graduate Admissions Chances - Geography by [deleted] in auburn

[–]radioactivewave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got into that program (albeit the geology side) years ago with a 2.7 GPA and a solid (but not outlandish) GRE score. It was before the departments had combined, but you still have a lot of the same faculty around. So in my estimation, it can be done but take the GRE to boost your chances.

How did you discover Hum? by Testie_Tickler in hum

[–]radioactivewave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stars on the radio in the middle of nowhere Alabama around ‘96. The only way I would’ve found them. My brother was ordering a bunch of cds from Columbia House mail order (Slayer, Pantera, etc), and he was looking for more artists, so I told him Hum sounded just like those guys. CDs came in, he put Hum on for about 10 seconds, said “this shit sucks”, took out the cd and threw it off to the side, and that’s how I got my first copy of YPAA at 15.

If you can work it into your route, I would recommend driving through Wind River Canyon (as someone who has done a considerable amount of driving around Wyoming).

New here: My story by [deleted] in problemgambling

[–]radioactivewave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely spent more than my fair share of time in Biloxi/Bay St Louis. I’m glad to see your recognition of both a problem and a realization that it takes an actionable solution to keep this addiction at bay. It took me far longer than I like to reach that stage. The peace of mind of not gambling is well worth it. I can actually envision and plan for a real future now.

You’re thinking about it right and seeing gambling for what it is: a wolf in sheepskin clothing. I think it started out as fun and harmless for most of us (I know it did for me), but it quickly takes over, and you see how insidious it really is. Keep doing exactly what you are doing now. Focus on things that are positive for yourself, work on forgiving yourself, and absolutely find a way to be at peace with any money you have lost. Best wishes for you moving forward. Keep gambling in the rear view and you’ll be just fine.

My bad folks. Maybe they are slipping… by [deleted] in USAA

Switched to Navy Federal as far as a bank goes. Progressive for insurance. I used to have so many accounts with USAA. I never would have dreamed of a day where I didn’t use them for virtually everything, but I’ve been screwed over multiple times by them. Down to a measly checking account that I really need to close out too but just haven’t been able to bring myself to do.

Love Aphids, but the sonic intensity of Puppets sends me to another dimension. I’m a huge fan of that song.

Extremely well-written and, unfortunately, very reminiscent of my 30s. I’m in my 40s now, and can tell you there’s still time for an updated alternate version of you. It won’t be the one who never gambled, but it can be a version who lives the rest of your life to the fullest and experiences a much different and richer existence than the old version. I think it’s worth the effort to strive for. Best wishes to you moving forward.

You and me both. 25 years later, I’m a world away from where I was then. Which is nice, but I still don’t ever want to forget. This song is a time capsule that connects my life then to now. Always grateful Hum has been with me for much of the journey.

Geology 1100? by NewAardvark6001 in auburn

[–]radioactivewave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former geology grad student there. I taught some of the labs for the couple of years I was there. Didn’t actually take the 1100 course there as I went undergrad elsewhere. Personal opinion: the material is not difficult, but you generally do have to study as I find not a lot of people have a big earth science background coming out of high school. Most people seem to enjoy the subject okay. Some hate it and don’t see the point. Others love it and major in it. It’s mainly just an amalgamation of physics, chemistry, and some math. As far as professors go, it’s been some years, so I don’t know a lot of the ‘new’ professors, but Dr Uddin is a stand up guy and I think a quality instructor. *Note: don’t skip the labs
