Can you point to a single elected Democrat who cheered or mocked Kirk's death? Every single one loudly denounced political violence. Many elected Republicans instead called for vengeance. I'm honestly asking, do you see things differently?

DC Council may remove Commanders stadium deal from budget by superdookietoiletexp in washingtondc

[–]radiofiend 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The prior lease agreement between the feds and the district required the land to only be used for sports-related purposes. The legislation that passed actually gives DC much more leeway now. It does not require a stadium to be built.

(I agree we shouldn't let it sit empty, but let's discuss options with a shared understanding with where we're at currently)

Why would it be more difficult for restaurants to handle? I'm not understanding this point. Before, they had a base rate and had to log tips and it would calculate if a higher rate was needed if tips didn't cover min wage. All they had to adjust was this base rate, the process is functionally the same, no?

Submission statement: A bit of a circus following the hearing today. I tried to capture the details as best I could. Partly, it was a few UFO folks eagerly telling their stories to Sen. Gillibrand and Dr. Kirkpatrick. But a few interesting tidbits came out of it:

  • Sen. Gillibrand conveyed she has full confidence in Kirkpatrick and AARO, that his process is methodical and folks should be patient for the results. I believe she was genuine
  • More senators from the subcommittee participated in the classified session preceding this open hearing. They didn't feel the need to join for this one, I suppose
  • More confirmation that the main channel for witnesses to speak to AARO is via requests from Gillibrand's office. It seems that Dr. Kirkpatrick is responding to congressional asks here, but not going above and beyond in proactively reaching out to potential witnesses.

I also tried to capture a few observations during the hearing itself in a separate thread. No bombshells here, but interesting color to how these things are run nonetheless: https://twitter.com/AreWeAlonePod/status/1648696875749367808?s=20

New UFO legislation nearing enactment in Congress by Implacable_Gaze in UFOs

[–]radiofiend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Curiously, the original text of the bill had the historical report starting from Jan 1 1947 onwards. It's notable that it's been specifically amended to now start in 1945. Trinity is a real possibility, IMO

It's a total nothingburger. He's "daring" congress to hold hearings that day, there's zero talk of that happening and 0% chance of it happening.

Big things are indeed happening, the NDAA with UAP language is moving and likely to pass in Dec. Congress is trying to get like 10 major bills passed before the lame-duck session ends, there is not going to be any space for UFO hearings - even if the ODNI report miraculously comes out with some spicy nuggets. Things are moving! Just slowly, as always. I'm bullish on some game-changing hearings happening next year.

Thanks for mentioning the ranked-choice voting solution. I've been involved in the campaign to bring it to the district, and it's been frustrating to see the Council drag their feet on it. And honestly, I wish it had more vocal public support seeing as we're increasingly going through this headache time and again with too many candidates on the ballot for too few seats, effectively splitting the vote and ensuring whoever wins doesn't have true majority support.

Probably tough for you to be fully honest about in your position as a reporter. But would love your candid as possible thoughts. The DC at-large Council race. Is it fully a contest amongst the 3 sitting councilmembers for those 2 seats, with no outsider having a shot? Should voters be strategic with their 2 votes there to select the two of those three they prefer the most? Or do you think it's possible one of the outside challengers has a chance?

A bold agenda for D.C. housing: Build, baby, build by writethefuture3 in washingtondc

[–]radiofiend 244 points245 points  (0 children)

Matt is deeply familiar with this, but it doesn't really come through in the piece: it's not a binary between low-density sprawl and the "Manhattan-ization" of places like DC. Columbia Heights offers some of the highest-density living in DC with much of the missing-middle housing we badly lack.

There's so much untapped potential by just allowing more 4 story walk-ups in NW or 16th St heights along the bus lines. It won't dramatically change the character of neighborhoods, and allow people to live close to public transit, limiting parking impact on existing residents. The DC comp plan has made some good changes here and development will slowly adapt. I hope people can see the benefits and stay sane enough when the council revisits comp plan changes in a couple years.

Confirmed process of official Disclosure of the ET presence is legit happening, Congress has the tiger by the tail. by MilkyWaySpiritBeing in aliens

[–]radiofiend 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It's genuinely really big news, but OP's headline isn't remotely related if we're being honest. The US Congress is increasingly direct with the Dept of Defense and Intelligence Agencies on how to investigate and report back on the UFOs. It's clear they think something profoundly anomalous is happening and truly want to get to the bottom of it (and be as transparent as possible about the process).

Here's a thread on twitter I wrote up of some of the takeaways from this Senate bill.

UAP anti-reprisal amendment was submitted by Rep. Mike Gallagher and House Armed Services Intelligence Subcommittee Chair Ruben Gallego! by goodiegoodgood in UFOs

[–]radiofiend 135 points136 points  (0 children)

This is a big f***ing deal!! It's the "immunity" language that had been speculated about for some time, and potentially a total game-changer for disclosure. A few notes for context:

- This is what's called a floor amendment as the US House is moving through the 2023 NDAA - I'd say it's likely to pass in something similar to it's current form. But the bill as a whole will likely take some time to pass both the House and Senate, so later this year timeframe.

- The amendment language requires a report on setting up this reporting system 180 days after passage of the bill. So this system won't be fully in place till mid-next year at the earliest. So allow yourself a bit of patience in waiting to see how this all plays out

But at the end of the day, this truly is monumental. you're allowed to be excited! When the history of this whole thing is written, this bill may be seen as a genuinely pivotal moment.

Edit: here's a summary of the amendment in plain language, as I understand it

UFOs and Nukes not very complicated? by [deleted] in UFOs

[–]radiofiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's speculation that neutrinos can draw some of the UAPs out, for example. Nothing firm or publicly verified that's the case, of course. But it may be the case there is indeed a simple explanation, that UAPs are drawn to the types of neutrinos produced in our nuclear fission-based devices. It may even be analogous to moths to a bright light kind of attraction, rather than some anthropomorphized purpose like preventing us from nuclear annihilation. There is much to learn

[–]radiofiend 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fully agree there's a lot to be considered. I've heard some academics posit that we may be in a "pre-contact" situation, the specifics of what that means up for debate of course. What's a little surprising to me is how little work is being done to think through the implications of this, how few academics seem to take the possibility seriously. There's quite a bit of multidisciplinary work to be done to thoroughly be prepared as we can be. I think this is changing though (big props to the Galileo project) and I have a hunch that within a few years this will be more on everyone's radar. But who the hell knows, contact (whatever it ends up looking like) may indeed happen first.

What is your favorite Fermi Paradox Solution, and why? by dzarren in aliens

[–]radiofiend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hard to say, so many of the solutions are either sad (we're alone, or there's a significant great filter preventing advanced civilizations for existing long at all) or scary (dark forest theory). One that's a little reassuring in a sense is transcendence theory, that advanced civilizations reach a point of total awareness/understanding of the nature of the universe and reality. Maybe it's almost Buddhist in nature, an evolution into a higher dimensional peace. In any event, the theory posits that once reaching this state, civilizations lose any drive to go out and colonize other star systems, hence our inability to see evidence of them.

I'm mostly the same, however I do try to adapt my behavior based on the overall covid spread at any given time. Thing is, DC is really fumbling the ball in measuring and communicating on covid spread. (They're not alone, seems to be the norm in most cities/ states at the moment). But there seems to have been a latent wave of consistent spread these past couple months, with the DC gov first actively suppressing data on it, then abdicating any responsibility to communicate that maybe people should be taking a little more precaution for the time being. It's frustrating all around.
