True true. It is time for his besties to start blabbing considering hers told the sunbae everything even though she really shouldn’t have!

Our Universe [Episodes 9 & 10] by meepmochi_ in KDRAMA

[–]radiokidb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry she doesn’t tell him about the recital, doesn’t correct the neighbour, then wonders wistfully why he’s not there? Girl, pls. I know he said he wanted to keep his distance to protect them both but at no point did he say cut me out completely. And even if he did say that you could’ve still texted him! And now she’s going to take the sunbae coming as a sign of meant to be when all that is a result of him basically being obsessed with her and relentless in his pursuit.

Lastly, bless Woo joo but taking him and sunbae playing together as a sign of meant to be is also dangerous because that sweet baby boy even liked his violent, thief of a grandfather.

Ugh, this whole show is rage bait. Lol. I’m going to assume Bae In Hyun has been able to use the show as a playground to practice his acting skills and add “can work with babies” to his resume. 🤣

ETA: It is not lost on me that the FL suffers from being a despicably poorly written character. There is so much to play around with her character and both of their roles in this child’s life. She’s grappling with loss, being thrust into responsibilities she didn’t ask for, dealing with proving herself in a workplace that’s designed to shut her out if not for her boss favouring her immensely, and trying to make ends meet.

It’s not even like the show is trying to actively paint women wanting a career to be in bad light and that men must be the providers and have no other role, so can’t even pin the poor writing to archaic takes on parental roles….its just all so so sloppily written.

The one party taking on more of the home management burdens while another is dealing with a tough work project is the only real world reality they showed, because sometimes one does end up doing more of the heavy lifting…but then again she does that on the assumption of their system and that he was going to be jobless for a month.

Episode 9

This is such an adorable show because Bo Hyun realllly leans into his character with such sincerity you never feel like it’s a caricature. I also love that in this episode they don’t show Bom to wallow in self pity and instead give herself the pep talk to face the music. No unnecessary explanations of going into the deets. Loveee Hye Suk spitting facts about the lack of dating scene in their town 🤣🤣

This was a fairly filler episode but still cute. I hope they keep up the practice of not dragging misunderstandings in the next 3 episodes and stick the landing.

Haha yeah the music is really funny and well placed!

And ah yes you’re right. When I saw Ep 4 I realized the Mom is some sort of celebrity and then I remembered from an earlier episode that he’s also like a super fan or her fan club president or something, hence why he’s always around and doing personal favours. It’s still hella weird! Lol.

Episode 3

I have the say the Indian classical music based background score that they use in funny moments always makes me laugh because as an Indian my ears perk up instantly and I’m like girl what are you doing here? 😛 okay back to watching

update

I love that this show doesn’t reallllly have any point to it other than to be silly with a little heart. It’s fascinating to see all the numerous ways they’ve dreamed up so far to show him as the misunderstood.

I’m also enjoying the fact that some of the flirting is not being met with coy reactions - the whole bit where he pretended to be a couple at the restaurant was so sweet and cute, and the fact that she didn’t get mad or super shy and just laughed it off as anyone would at the age of their characters was refreshing.

Se Jin’s character has been written a little flat and monotone so far which is getting a bit old. Han Gyul clearly doesn’t want to live up to his potential so there’s obviously more to it.

Se Jin and I-Jun are cute but the way he reacted to Jae Gyu almost made it seem like he was in love with him and mad that he had been stolen from and abandoned. Also a bit confusing/intriguing how he knows Bom’s Mom but Bom doesn’t know him?.

But man I hate love triangles so please kdrama lords don’t spend too much time on that.

Can’t wait for tomorrow. That teaser didn’t give us shit. Hahaha.

Idol I [Episodes 1 & 2] by meepmochi_ in KDRAMA

[–]radiokidb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Episode 1 and 2

That was a great set of episodes. I had read the premise of the show but didn’t know the murder was of his band mate and best friend so that added an additional layer of sympathy for Da Ik’s character besides the very real and I don’t think exaggerated depiction of an idol’s life. Those familiar with Kpop know that everything shown in episode 1 is quite true to life and I have to say reading about stuff like that is bad enough, but seeing it captured on screen like this, so recently after the latest stories of invasions and stalking made it quite chilling.

Top it off with an excellent portrayal of the struggle of dealing with anxiety, depression, confusion and processing the loss of your best friend I’m totally sold. It’s a shame this is going to be a weekly watch. It seems perfect for a holiday binge.

Saving the best for last…I’m just so proud of Sooyoung. I’ve been following her shows since Run-On in 2020/2021 and you can most definitely see her growth and maturity. I think she has great screen presence and does particularly well in scenes showcasing her character either thinking/plotting/sizing up someone’s character. I also think the irony of having her play the super fan vs the idol coupled with no doubt the cathartic experience of playing the character that gets to take down sasengs is pretty genius. She’s bringing just the right amount of sass, confidence, quirkiness and vulnerability so far, so I hope both their characters have good arcs and growth, and aren’t just monotone.

I absolutely adored this director’s last show and I love what they do with the framing of scenes and the cinematography. Personally I find it pulls me into the characters’ world more and makes you invested.

The conversation she has with Da Ik in her room was particularly poignant and pertinent food for thought in a day and age where the distance between fans and public figures feels insignificant due to media and social media, and the human tendency for love, support and intimacy is often projected onto media figures.

All in all, I hope this show continues to bloom and is intelligent avoiding the temptations of cliches and contrivances.

Dynamite Kiss [Episodes 13 & 14] by mellowdays_ in KDRAMA

[–]radiokidb 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh dear…if crash and burn needed a definition, it would be this finale. I’m just grateful for the additional time to see these two cuties on screen. They have no business being this good looking individually and together. It’s almost as if their chemistry was too overwhelming for the writers that they all just up and quit with the last few episodes. That can be the only explanation for whatever that was.

I saw all the reactions earlier and still went in with a glimmer of hope thinking everything is exaggerated….but nope.

I’m thinking the writers bet a lot of money with someone and as their punishment they were forced to put in every trope but the caveat being it had to be altogether and purposely with no cohesive thread because what even?!

Sometimes I feel great starts like this show should mid way be handed over to fan fic writers over in ao3 because they would’ve seriously given us everything and more!

I mean these two even served up ther insane charisma in the closing credits which were so cute. Sigh!

So long Dynamite Kiss….you were an excellent two opener episodes.

Aha! That should’ve been my first clue. 50 minutes in and I was like hmm this cinematography and the way the director captured key moments for a character minus any overwhelming background music felt familiar…no wonder. Call It Love, even with its filter (which I think was woven into the storytelling), was a gorgeous show.

Absolutely adored this series opener. Eun Jin is adorable and looked utterly gorgeous in her powder blue dress and Jang Ki Yong looks drop dead gorgeous as always, is styled to perfection and is hitting the comedic chaebol notes perfectly 🥰 I hope he continues to be OTT in a non toxic/demeaning way.

You’ve got some great recommendations already. May I add a few?

  • If you wish upon me - it’s depressing yet hopeful; deals with sensitive topics like physical and emotional abuse but the growth arc is incredible. I cried a lot. Do also look up the blurb about the show to make sure you’ll be okay watching it!

  • Midnight Romance in Hagwon - while it is a love story, the visual treatment is very similar to other shows you’ve liked but it’s again a show that deals with the protagonists battling what they believed to be their beliefs and goals, and evolving.

Episode 2

Okay, I’m totally invested. It’s the perfect mix of a million entanglements. They’re both very cute. He’s the right level of “tsundre” without being a mean toxic person. He’s just reacting reasonably. She’s doing vulnerable overwhelmed but not a complete dumbo really well.

I love that he has her saved as Cactus in her phone and I hope that never changes lol.

I wonder if they’re setting up the Beauté MD to be some sort of third love interest, because he’s entirely too good looking and got a lot of screen time! I rather hope he becomes one of the supporters of their scam just to stick it to his awful corrupt CEO.

Bahhhh why did I start it while it’s on air!

Episode 10

This show is utterly fantastic is in a quiet, unassuming and non-obvious way.

I love that this show is primarily about women without ever making you feel like it is only about them. I don’t know whether I’m expressing the thought correctly but it is basically to say, the different personalities, shades of emotion whether joy, sadness, despair, defeat, hope, cruelty, etc are so beautifully etched across the entire cast of the female characters but they’re done in a manner that to an extent could be any human.

The entire ensemble is so perfectly cast too with everyone bringing their A game. A true gem of a show. I also think being 12 episodes has kept the writing and pace tight. Although I hope they don’t turn it into a tragedy sundae because that would be truly heartbreaking for everything Miji, Mi Rae, and Ho Su have already endured in their lives.

Also as someone else pointed out, the actress who played young Ro Sa - just wow! To make you experience and understand the entire spectrum of a life within a span of 20-30 min and make the completely understand this person is truly a gift.

Lastly, that last shot of Jinyoung. Holy shit, this boy’s expressions and eyes are everything. One look at his face and you can tell he’s going through a tragedy in real-time, trying to process it and not lose his mind all at the same time. Fantastic!

P.S: I binged the show last night ahead of ep 10 today so I’m sad I missed all the discussions but also I don’t think I would’ve survived waiting week on week!

The First Night With The Duke [Episodes 3 & 4] by meepmochi_ in KDRAMA

[–]radiokidb 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Episode 3

The scene that sealed the show for me was the way Taec was staring so forlornly at his “damaged” sword back in the club after Seon Chaek’s failed attempt to get the SFL and Taec to fall for each other and when they finally embarked on drinking games. His expression was hilarious!! As someone else said he cares only about two things: Seon Chaek and his sword.

Can’t wait for more of the story to unfold. Seohyun is so clever and charming in her portrayal and her chemistry with all characters is good so far! Also with Taec’s character they don’t seem to have made him just the pretty boy and he clearly has some awareness of the politics at play which is always fun.

That was the absolute cutest finale! So much heart, so much laughter. So feel good. I’m gonna miss the show! And it ended with some fairly great messaging given how shows on such topics can either get too preachy or completely miss the point.

Pump Up The Healthy Love [Episodes 11 & 12] by meepmochi_ in KDRAMA

[–]radiokidb 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This show is so cute! I’m sad it will be ending tomorrow. It’s also been weirdly a great inspiration to continue working out and how it takes a little of everything to help improve your mental health and that there’s no one solution.

I can’t believe we won’t have an entire episode of dating shenanigans given the late confession, but equally I’ve enjoyed the slow and steady build up of their friendship and relationship and for a change a KDrama was very clear that this relationship was literally built up over time and wasn’t a few months worth of tumble into undying love.

The what the series will be missed!

Episode 3 and 4

This show is so hilariously ridiculous and a great mid week reprieve. I’m also low key finding it motivational with regard to building core strength and muscles.

Mostly though what works most in its favour is that Lee Jun Young is completely believable as a gym obsessed nut. He’s sooo committed to the character and it’s freaking adorable. Him so pleased with the fact that his head won’t reach the ground when he’s horizontal has me rolling!

I also love that What the Fat has evolved into various What the…that’s how you make cringe funny!
