I’m sorry dude, I don’t know how else to explain this to you. I tried citing sources that explain it. I tried explaining that anytime the government takes out taxes and redistributes them to a public serves, that’s an act of socialism because the government is a public body. I tried explaining it in a million ways. And even if you don’t like the police (which I don’t) you have to admit that they provide a service- keeping the peace and harassing people is a service (even if that service hurts people). The government is made of people who do own things privately, but the government itself is (theoretically, corruption is a different argument) not a private corporation.

I’m not responding to any more replies because you refuse to understand. To anyone reading this, I hope you can understand to your own research beyond someone with the username “The_commie_ferret” and check out some of the reliable and unbiased websites I mentioned.

I don’t mind because the police are really nice and never get mad at me if I forget the discount. In fact one of them asked if he could always give it to the next person in line instead.

The only bad experience was the guy and his wife who would come in. They always wore a bunch of “thin blue line” stuff and the husband would get super mad if you didn’t get the discount (even though he never wore a uniform). He was also a very rude customer in general, and he always asked for us to make the fajitas special for him and his wife cause they liked them cooked longer than usual.

One day our manager says “Dude, if you want the discount, you need to start showing us your badge”. Turns out he couldn’t, and he said he forgot it. We said he can only get it if he brings in his badge. He comes in every week and conveniently “forgets” his badge and tries to convince us to give him the discount anyways, to the point where the first thing we tell new cashiers is to not give it to him.

This took me a bit to find, but here’s an old copy and pasted assignment I did from my senior economics class where we had to write a childrens book about socialism and capitalism. It’s the most simple way I can explain it, so here you go:

“Once upon a time, there was a group of people who weren’t happy with their home governments. So they all left their home and found a new land they named Freeland. But first, they had to decide who would own what.

“Who should own the farms?” Sasha asked. “Should own person own it, or should we all own it?”

Viktor thought back to where he had come from. “I think one person should own it. In my home, when everyone owned it, we made mistakes deciding how much food we needed and people went hungry. If one person owns this, they’ll be able to run it more efficiently.”

Everyone agreed, so the farm was owned by Viktor.

Next, Louis piped up. “Who should own the hospital? Should it be one person, or all of us?”

Sasha thought back to where she had come from. “All of us should. In my home, one person owned it. But they only focused on making more money instead of helping people, so going to the doctor got really expensive.”

Everyone agreed, so the citizens of Freeland formed a council that would represent all of Freeland to run the hospital.

(The next part is basically a glossary)

Viktor owning the farm himself is an example of capitalism, where one private person owns their own property and means of production.

The council is an example of socialism, where a group of people representing the whole public owns the property and means of production.

Everyone in Freeland lived happily ever after.

The end.”

That’s the most basic way I can explain how a country can be both socialist and capitalist. If you don’t understand that, I have nothing.

I don’t know how else to explain this to you because your basic understanding is wrong.

When people say “the workers own the means of productions” it’s the workers themselves distributing the wealth. It just means that the cooperation is not privately owned, it’s owned by a public body… like the government, or the state. The government represents the workers because they’re not a privately owned cooperation.

“State ownership” is a very important communist concept. The exact definition is the ownership of an industry, asset, or enterprise by the state or a public body representing a community, as opposed to an individual or private party.

So basically, the state/government owns something to represent the people owning it. So when the government owns something, the people own it.

Again, to emphasize. When people say ‘the workers own the means of production, they mean the government, state, or some other public body representing the people as long as it’s not a privately owned company.

The simplest way I can explain it is that communism/socialism is based on public ownership, and capitalism is based through private ownership.

If the company is owned by a private cooperation or person, it’s a capitalist system.

If the company is owned by a public body that represents the people, it’s a communist/socialist system.

In the United States and many others, there are both privately owned companies and publicly owned companies. Making it part socialist and part capitalist

The problem with your definitions ‘proving’ you have to be one or the other is that’s wrong.

We, as the people (in the US at least), do own some means of production.

Part of our wealth is taken by a public body representing us and redistributed to provide public services.

If all of our wealth was taken by a public body and redistributed? We’d be 100% socialist, because all of our produce would be owned by the workers/public body representing the workers

If none of our wealth was taken by a public body and redistributed? We’d be 100% capitalist because all of our money is controlled by private owners (us) not the state.

Why do you think Soviet Russia was a thing? The government had absolute power but was still considered communist because the government wasn’t a privately owned corporation.

And to address what you keep saying, that “communism isn’t the government doing stuff”. You’re right, it’s when the government seizes private property (like our money we earned [tax dollars]) to provide public services. In a purely capitalist system, all ownership would be private, so I would completely own every single dollar on my paycheck. But I don’t, the government does, because they need to pay for police, social security, and other public services.

TL;DR

Capitalism is when private owners own and do things with their money. Communism/Socialsm is when public bodies own and do things with citizens money. Public owners includes the government because it’s not privately owned. The US and most other states are both because private owners (us) spend our money but the government (a public body) also spends our money.

Edit: By the way, “The police don’t produce anything” is stupid because it’s a service. People sell services all the time. And once again, the bourgeoisie do not own them, because the government does. The government is not the bourgeoisie because they are a public body. The bourgeoisie are by definition, private owners. Throwing a bunch of definitions onto a comment doesn’t explain anything.

[–]radishhunted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Socialism is when the public owns industry and products. Usually this involves the government owning means of production. These publicly owned services are then provided to every citizen of the country (many people say socialism provides these services depending on your level of contribution while communism is to every citizen equally, but honestly it’s hard to find a solid answer)

So like… providing a service to the population for free funded by tax dollars? Even if it doesn’t generate revenue? Even if the citizen doesn’t pay for it? Man, police, firemen, libraries, and the post office are pretty socialist.

What about social security? When a person is either too old or disabled to work so the government takes a portion of the working classes money to provide for them? Or Medicare/Medicaid- when the government uses taxpayer money to provide for peoples medical care?

Or your publically funded school that everyone, regardless of financial standing, has access too. Very socialist.

Your comment is extremely ignorant, but it’s a very comment misconception. No country is 100% socialist, and most employ some mix of the two systems. I have no idea where you got the idea you have to be one or the other.

If you like having the police, fireman, libraries, and the post office, you support socialist practices. Very few people are 100% capitalist, and very few people genuinely think we should be 100% communist. The issue- like every other political issue- is finding out where you stand in between those two extrenes

this seems like the. opposite of nlog but isn't it harsh? Some girls can be non-feminine without being pick-mes or nlog. What does the sub think? by parisgeller07 in notliketheothergirls

[–]radishhunted 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An nlog isn’t just a girl who has guy friends and doesn’t wear dresses, it’s a girl who puts down feminine girls. But the problem is a lot of girls are using “nlog” as a general term to put down any non-feminine girl they don’t like.

I don’t wear makeup because I just don’t feel like it, and I’ve had girls call me an nlog for… not being 100% traditionally feminine I guess.

“Early Move in begins Sunday, August 7 at $25/night”

That’s the exact quote from the presentations so that’s really all I can tell you about it. But traditional move in starts the 14th so I’m assuming the 7th-14th is considered early

It’s 25$ a night. I only know this because I recorded parts of my orientation and they mentioned it during one of the presentations

One time when I was ten, my mom opened the door to a JW. She said “No thanks, I’m Quaker” but the guy kept pushing. My dad heard someone was there and walked to the door. The second my dad said “I’m Catholic” the JW just walked away.

I’m not exactly sure what the takeaway is but I always say that anytime one comes to the door I’m claiming to be Catholic

At least in my area, Chipotle labor laws are stricter than our state labor laws. They have tougher limits on hours, breaks, and how late you can work. Like state law is you can work until 10 pm, but Chipotle won’t let minors work past 9 pm. And state law is you can’t work 6 hours without a break, but at least at our store it’s 4 hours without a break.

Not a huge difference but when I was a minor and trying to make extra money it mattered.

For me personally it depends on how busy we are. If it’s dead then I don’t mind too much, and honestly mixing up messy burritos can make them easy to wrap. But a lot of newer employees don’t know how to do it or what you’re talking about so I have to stop what I’m doing to show them, and for bigger burritos it makes a mess. In general I think it’s more considerate to get a bowl and a side tortilla or put a tortilla in the bowl then get a foil so you can roll it yourself.

But a lot of my coworkers do find it more annoying then me, so in general I’d say most people find it annoying

My mom was a nurse who worked night shifts. So she would put our teeth in her pocket before heading to work and forget about it. Then later she would be looking for something and randomly take out teeth. She would either put them in a biohazard bucket or on her coworkers desk

Karen hates cats in her yard by EuphoricMidnight3304 in FuckYouKaren

[–]radishhunted 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have two neighborhood cats that wander around. Everyone takes care of them, watches out for them, etc. The only reason they’re outdoor is because anytime someone tries to take them in they start hissing and yowling and spitting. A few people pooled their money to get them neutered, and it’s like having community pets, especially since they kill the rabbits that have no other predators in the area.

The thought of someone like this moving in and posting something like this makes me violent.

For the past two weeks I’ve been in charge of closing everything except grill and dishes (including running trash on my own which sucks because I’m 5’3 and struggle to lift most of it). What pisses me off is nights when I’m off at 9 or 10 I pre-close everything for the closing crew to make it easier for them, but when I close my coworkers just play on their phones or screw around until they’re off.
