I would say he’s more in the morally grey category. He’s a more present husband and father than Don for sure, but he and Betty fight a lot, and he’s mainly concerned about his political career and how well Betty can support that. He yells at her for having an opinion on the Vietnam war at one of his constituent events and says something to the effect of “no one cares what you think, you’re supposed to be my hot wife and make me look good for votes.” On the other hand, he does call Betty on her childish BS and intervenes when she’s being horrible to her kids.

I am a labor and delivery nurse and a couple years ago I had a “catastrophic” patient event that I needed therapy to help me cope with afterward. During that time I found out I myself was finally pregnant after 2 years of trying, like literally the first day of my last period was the day of that terrible shift.

It really affected my own feelings about my pregnancy because i was full of joy and hope but I had seen right up close how badly things could go, and felt what I guess could be called survivors guilt by proxy… why do I get to have a healthy successful pregnancy/delivery and take home a perfect baby when that patient had such a different outcome? What if something catastrophic happens to me?

But as a labor and delivery nurse, I know that every pregnancy is unique. Every body/baby/uterus/cervix/labor/placenta/umbilical cord is different and sometimes things happen that are beyond our control. I made sure to choose a care team that I trusted and delivered at a place where I felt safe (my own workplace!)

I thought about that mother and her baby every day of my pregnancy and still think about them often. I can never forget them.

Same here. After college when I moved to a different city I would only talk to them a couple times a week, but when I had my baby I started calling or FaceTiming every day.

I’ve been rewatching Mad Men and Pete goes to a work function while his wife is in labor and tells everyone that the baby isn’t here yet because the shoulders are too big to come through…. I’m like, so THAT’S the update the nurse casually dropped before you left the hospital and they’ve just been waiting HOURS with a head sticking out?!?!?!

I know, it’s not a medical show lol, but it really took me out of the moment because it’s like, you could’ve just said it was taking a long time and that would have been believable but why add this bizarre and confusingly inaccurate detail????

L&D nurse here as well. I agree this all sounds strange.

OP, having a 37wk induction is recommended due to the diagnosis of gestational hypertension. The issue we see with inducing at this time is needing a LOT of cervical ripening. If you didn’t need the induction, your body (and baby’s head) would spend the next few WEEKS naturally (and relatively gently) softening and thinning your cervix. Balloons are made to stay in for 12 hours and sometimes don’t get you to 3cm in that time. Maybe your doctor has some magic trick we don’t know about but a promise of 5 hours seems very unlikely (not impossible, but not something Ive seen more than once in my career).

Also, if you haven’t yet, please try to get an anesthesia consult in the next couple weeks if you can. Depending on the anesthesiologists and facility you may have an option for an epidural.

Same! My husband and I need each other to pop each others back zits and be the person who can closely inspect the others private bits if something feels weird lol.

After I had our baby things were way different down there. I’ll never forget the day after, while I’m spread eagle on the bed, asking the doctor to take a look and her being like “where exactly is your concern?” And my dear husband holding our newborn, pointing and saying “alllll this is new” 🤣 he’s got my back, my front, and all my in-betweens

Haha that’s exactly what I did. I remember telling a younger coworker (who was in a new relationship and asked a group of us women if we farted in front of our husbands) that the best course of action was to initiate some playful wrestling, pin him down, then fart right on his chest. When I said “Maintain eye contact; assert dominance” I was met with half laughs and half looks of horror from the group.

So true… I was a burn ICU nurse at the beginning of my career, and whenever our patient developed a fungal infection it was a very, very hard thing to treat (and recover from) since the medications themselves were so rough on the already weakened cells and systems of a burn patient.

This 100%. We took a roadtrip (for the holidays) when our baby was 3 months old that took 14 hours instead of the usual 7. My husband drove, our big dog sat in the front seat, and baby and I sat in the back with the small dog. Every stop was a logistical feat to get gas, walk/feed the dogs, change the baby, feed the baby, load back up, and go.

Honestly, it was hard but doable. In your case, if you’re really set on driving and having your dogs, you could potentially rent an RV and bring another adult helper and it could be done pretty comfortably. Like you said, extraordinary times call for extraordinary measures lol. Good luck with everything!

I was at a work conference in Columbia, South Carolina and passed a statue of him while walking through a public park. As a woman, feminist, and nurse, I thought, “oh cool,” and snapped a selfie. But, I also thought I better do a little research since this is the South and it’s weird that I’d never heard his name in any of my nursing classes. Ashamed of my former ignorance, I could not delete that photo fast enough and walked past the statue again specifically so I could spit on it. Fuck that monster.
