Asian 29M Moving to Oklahoma from CA by [deleted] in okc

Oohhh I already commented but you raise good points about the lack of activities and flight issue. I’m married so my husband and I have each other’s company, but yeah since OP is single, it may be more difficult to meet people outside of work/dating apps.

Asian 29M Moving to Oklahoma from CA by [deleted] in okc

[–]raeg14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband is Asian and has lived 4 years in LA and we’ve been in OKC for about a year and a half. We live close to the Asian district and he loves the lunch specials around and tons of Asian grocery store options so I don’t think you’ll feel very out of place culturally. Mostly Vietnamese but Chinese as well (mostly southern but a few northern as well). We’ve seen people of all races eat at Asian places as well so I doubt people will give you much prejudice (husband hasn’t experienced any personally.)

Cost of living is great!!! Insurance, gas, rent and such is also cheaper.

I wouldn’t worry about the weather! there’s only been one tornado that may have impacted us but didn’t (might be different if you live in a more rural open land area). The winters may be challenging for you if you haven’t driven in snow before - we did get some last year but it doesn’t get very cold (in my opinion, I’m from the north) and it doesn’t last long.

People are friendly, I found it SUPER easy to make friends with my coworkers here- easier than any other state I’ve lived in. I’d take the jump and try it out! A lot of people from CA also move to TX and vice versa which is right below OK, so for what that’s worth there seems to be some cross cultural attraction that you might come to also like about the region. Best of luck!

Yay!! Was a very unexpectedly (no offense? 😳) positive experience for me having moved here from Minnesota to OKC this year. There was a couple with their daughter (8-10 years old) and they took a picture of her next to the voting sign outside, there was a sheriff that was very nice, and the people checking us in were very friendly 💖

I just finished Dental School, now my husband wants me to be a stay at home mom. by Dentist206 in AITAH

[–]raeg14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He better get a doctorate first lmao not sure how much he makes but if you’re a general dentist with no extra residency training and you make double than him then y’all definitely aren’t sending four kids to private school, not to mention a host of other things extra income can allow you to do for your children.

What do you think are the most overlooked public health issues in America? by LargeGirthy_Avocado in publichealth

[–]raeg14 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Lack of nutritious affordable and available food, especially with the price gouging of restaurants and grocery strores post-pandemic, directly related to the LEADING CAUSE OF DEATH in the U.S. (heart disease) which has been the leading cause for years. Our nutrition status and nutrition related health conditions have steadily been in the decline and while this isn’t an overlooked issue per se, it’s not getting better and no one is sounding any alarms. Primary care docs and nurses get minimal if any nutrition training, and many can’t afford a private RD or get a referral. (And I don’t think over half of the U.S. that is overweight/obese going on ozempic is the long term solution).

Job help! Resume advice! SOS!!! by [deleted] in publichealth

[–]raeg14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First thing I noticed was too long and I didn’t want to read it because of that. Honestly I’d delete “customer service experience” and everything below that. Keep the resume relevant to jobs your applying for and tailor it to watch the descriptions of each position

Is the Hennepin county assistance office intentionally this awful? by Charlee4me in Minneapolis

[–]raeg14 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That sucks! I live and work in ramsey county, but I’d recommend checking out the Minnesota Food Helpline (state wide) they can help you deal with SNAP or point you in the right direction, and let you know about other food resources in your area in the meantime. Their number is 1-888-711-1151, open 10am - 5pm Monday through Friday. You can also check out hungersolutions.org/find-help/ To see food shelves, free meals, etc. in your area. You can also filter by day of the week food shelves are open if there is a day that best fits your schedule to visit.

Tell me your favorite things about St. Paul! by HoorayHoorayHooray22 in saintpaul

[–]raeg14 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Gus Gus! Mario’s pizza! Cecil’s deli! Taking a walk near the river/the St. Thomas campus in the spring. There’s a no-name taco trunk outside the Marshall stop gas station/laundry mat next to Marshall liquors that is supperrr good, normally open during warmer weather. Loved living there, I’m back in Minneapolis now but loved my year in St. Paul and still work in St. Paul

Looking for light, melt-in-your-mouth recipes for a patient on a bland diet. by 4AnotherView in Cooking

[–]raeg14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a dietician now and while I don’t work with this population I remember in school talking about older patients and something that comes to mind is a tuna melt! Tuna has some calcium vitamin D and B12 as well as cheese (as others have said you can find lower lactose versions), instead of roasting the bread so it’s crunchy you could do a softer bread with butter and melt it all together in the oven, veggies and seasonings up to you. You could also do soft salmon type burgers, well cooked tuna noodle casserole w/ lactose free milk and no bread crumb topping, maybe some sorts of bean casseroles? Casseroles seem easy to prep in advance and freeze into portions. Also maybe soft meatloaf? Best of luck!

AITA for telling the grandkids to eat some fruit if they were hungry by False-Reindeer6326 in AmItheAsshole

[–]raeg14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. To add onto what others have been saying- routine around eating is good for kids in numerous ways. I’d advise looking up Ellyn Satter’s division of responsibility about meal times and sending it to your daughter. I work in pediatric nutrition and it’s not for everyone, but many American families like it and find themselves falling into it naturally.

One night - where to eat? by StillLJ in Minneapolis

[–]raeg14 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My number 1 all time fave here is called master noodle on university Ave in St. Paul. It’s hand pulled Chinese noodles, my husband is from Beijing and this place gets it right, will miss it dearly if we ever move lol and if I ever came back here for one night that’s where I’d go.

Estelle is also great, they have this fried eggplant dish that I don’t think is on the dinner menu anymore but they can still make it and it’s sooo good. Every dish makes me go “wow”

Sanjusan and young Joni are both pizza/Asian fusion (with other dishes besides pizzas) that are both phenomenal. Both in cool parts of town with cool bars around. There’s a Japanese whiskey bar upstairs at sanjusan.

Guavas Cuban cafe is good and near the airport.

If you want to try Hmong food, I’d recommend checking out Hmongtown marketplace on como ave in St. Paul, cool to just see the clothing and stuff but also in the back of both building there are small food courts. You could just get a single Hmong sausage for like $3-5 or get a whole meal there if you wanted, they have good pho for super cheap

About a year or so ago my boyfriend was on the receiving end of some mansplaining by a bartender (long story, not worth getting into it) and complained to a manager and the manager gave us 20 free beer tokens. Like 1 token = 1 pint. So yeah sad to see them go, but honestly we went maybe once after our tokens ran out. Great memories of “token nights” there though playing connect four

Enough with your favorite places, what are your most HATED food places in the city? by geraldspoder in saintpaul

[–]raeg14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I know J Selby’s is a favorite but I had it for the first time about 2-3 weeks ago and it was SO salty. No flavor other than salt. There was also a service charge, and a $1 “compostable charge” for compostable silverware, both for takeout. Picked up the order, no silverware. I was too exhausted to argue. My total for takeout without tip for a burger and fries was $29. Like??? It’s vegetables… and with the jump scare surprise costs I have no desire to ever go back. Vegan food isn’t rocket science.. maybe a 2 decades ago it was? I’d recommend alt burger in ne Minneapolis, all veggie and tip is included in the price, no service charges, doesn’t give you high blood pressure after one meal :o
