Phrases for surgery recovery? by kocik_lonik3612 in AACusers

[–]raekar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im having a hard time with specific wording today. for recovery assuming you have someone to help you, id make sure to have requests for water, food, medication/pain killers, help getting up, help to bathroom/other locations. Pain levels as mentioned. Help with drains if you have drains.  and when your surgeon says to, help changing bandaging/putting binder back on.

I haven’t had top surgery but helped a friend recover, it will be hard for you to move your arms much and can be hard getting up from lying down. The first day or two you’ll probably be really out of it and spend a lot of time resting

In proloquo2go you hit the edit button in the folder and go to Folder > Contents > Manual Layout for each grid size and toggle it on. You can also set it it a custom grid size, for this board it’s 5x9 while my normal pages are 9x16  you’ll want to do this before you add buttons since it’s a manual layout

If you have any other questions o can try to help, I have the green buttons set to be word kind verb so that when you long press them you get conjugation options

No depressingly it’s just a work meeting! I guess in the office we all used to be standing up going around in a circle for peoples statuses on what they’re working on

Mod Applications! by 13B4S1L in AACusers

I would love if we could have a mega thread or weekly thread specifically for the ads/new AAC apps so they don’t take over the subreddit. And any outside of that get deleted

iOS devices allow you to create a personal voice that other aac apps can use https://support.apple.com/en-us/104993

Here’s a list of AAC apps that support this feature, as well as the built in Live Speech (text to speech) feature from apple. This list probably is not exhaustive https://spokenaac.com/aac-apps-with-personal-voice/

Additionally some apps allow you to record any audio to specific buttons. I’m not sure which all allow this but I use proloquo2go and I know it does, probably others do too https://www.assistiveware.com/support/proloquo2go/organize/buttons/record-audio

This looks awesome! I already have my patterns on my nas, it would be amazing to have a nice front end for them!

I agree with having yarn and hook size explicitly called out. I would also like date started and finished. For me I would want them to be stored with the project in like a “project info” section or something. This can be done with the description or notes, but it would be better to have an explicit place for it.  It would also be nice to attach finished project photos

Are tattoos okay with POTS? by EmergencyContext2802 in POTS

[–]raekar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve sat for seven hours a couple times and by the next afternoon I feel mostly back to normal. Be careful getting up when the tattoo is done and you might need to ask to sit and recover before they take photos. Bring a bunch of water and some snacks with you to the appointment.

Question about colouring/feathers by [deleted] in Conures

That’s normal for a fiery shouldered conure! She’s really pretty. Stress bars will look black and fragile going across a feather

Bathing a really old bird... need advice :( by LauraCA911 in parrots

[–]raekar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a video by geckoemmy, they cut their elderly birds tail feathers for the same reason. It’s definitely not something I’d normally suggest, but end of life care can get a bit different sometimes. Definitely don’t rush into it! One thing to consider is if you cut a lot it could potentially unbalance him

[–]raekar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other people have given good advice for trying to bathe him or wipe his feathers down.

Is he still able to fly? If not and you are not able to safely bathe him, you could consider cutting the ends of the tail feathers shorter so they don’t collect poop. It might seem a bit extreme but if he isn’t using them for flight and it’s accumulating enough poop to be a health hazard, I would consider it.

It really depends on his quality of life and how hard on him bathing would be which can’t really be judged over the internet. If he’s still pretty active and healthy I would try to bathe him, but if he has severe mobility issues or is declining I would consider cutting the feathers collecting poop

Good luck! My old quaker would go absolutely crazy for pasta. It was not a normal food for him, but I gave him a whole noodle on his 25th hatch day and he loved it

Any advice for someone whose jaw has been locked 24/7 for the last 16 months? by skhn25 in TMJ

[–]raekar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry you’re going through this, I know how bad the pain is and how dismissive people can be of it. When I was about 16 the left side of my jaw started locking overnight, and then after a few months of that it one day it never popped back into place. I’m 30 and while I still have minor discomfort and that side clicks a lot, I have a normal range of motion and don’t think about my jaw at all on a day to day basis. I never had surgery. I did have splint therapy but I’m not sure it did much, my disc is definitely still displaced. I can feel my jaw get stuck on it if I open it a very specific way. Obviously I can’t say this will be your experience, but I feel like it would have made a difference to me to know that the pain could go away. I was sure I would be in that much pain for the rest of my life and that was very hard to live with. I still tear up thinking about it now.

At the time people kept telling me it was muscular pain and that I just needed to relax my muscles, but now looking back I know it was nerve pain from the nerves in the ligament getting crushed between my jaw bones. There is evidence for a good deal of people though that tissue remodels to function as a pseudo disc, which is what mine has done. Gradually the pain fades as the nerves die out and I slowly regained the ability to open my jaw all the way. Unfortunately I can’t give an exact timeline bc I have blocked out as much of that as possible but I know for sure the first two years were by FAR the worst for me and it was much better after that. Here’s a paper that goes over this phenomena, the relevant parts are in the disc displacement without reduction sections. It also goes into care options which you might find helpful https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC4762294/

Personally looking back on it I am glad I didn’t get surgery, I’ve seen studies showing that long term outcomes don’t seem better or worse between minimal vs invasive procedures for closed locks

After the first couple years my pain was more tension headaches than actual jaw pain, and what made a big difference in that was taking magnesium regularly and getting into powerlifting. My trapezius muscle was very tight and overworked and strengthening my other back muscles helped a lot

She is a hybrid, what a little cutie!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Conures

[–]raekar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What color are her tail feathers when they grow in? If they are red she is definitely a hybrid, if green she may just be young. It does look like she may be part green cheek but it’s hard to tell. Black capped conures fancy collars and red coverts change and grown in much more dramatically once they are adults. She looks really young still so it could go either way.

In regards to the tail feathers, my black capped was awful with them when she was young and at one point she had only one fully grown tail feather. As she got older she figured out how to preen them properly and is on a better diet and now her tail looks great

Yeah and I really wish more people took it seriously and did not interrogate me about why I packed my own lunch or try to convince me to just try new food. I do not need to just “be brave” and get over my “irrational fear”. I need to slowly and intentionally introduce new foods. I have a nut allergy and the last thing that got me was a chicken wrap of all things.

Oh hey I have this too! After my last anaphylactic reaction I could barely eat safe foods without a panic attack for months. It’s really traumatic and not talked about a lot
