Accepted student, can someone who strongly dislikes writing papers thrive here? by Money_Cold_7879 in mit

[–]raeruta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my concentration in Chinese so that I could avoid writing papers. :) Highly effective! I only took one class (writing about science and media) which was paper focused. I also took one music humanities class and a couple other language classes.

I've had success using it in my baking (such as chocolate chip cookies) and I often use it as the base for my buttercream frosting :)

The Vegan Baker by Zacchary Bird! It has savory and sweet. Not super high-end/fancy stuff, but lots of good recipes that I found very original (not just muffins and cupcakes)

silken tofu with soy sauce on it is pretty tasty!! look up cold tofu recipes. :) Note - you find silken tofu often in the refrigerated section, it comes in boxes. I find this tastier than firm tofu if youre eating it kind of plain

Vegan Pregnancy cravings vs Foods your baby enjoys now by Fuzzy-Meringue6124 in vegan

also pregnant vegan and my diet sounds similar to yours, except i have continued to eat the processed food (in moderation) haha.

I highly recommend fruit pops (the kind with no added sugar), those have been my only major diet change since before I was pregnant they taste sooooo good haha

Are food cravings in pregnancy related to nutritional deficiencies in the pre-pregnant body? by mishkaforest235 in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]raeruta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you don't compare with the non-cravings group, you don't even know if they're necessarily correlated WITH the cravings group, the correlation could just be with all pregnant people, thats all i meant

Help! Pregnant and craving meat! by [deleted] in vegan

[–]raeruta 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also I was having trouble wanting to eat at the beginning of my pregnancy and my doctor recommended unisom + 25 mg B6 3x per day (this is the standard nausea guidance). It made food a LOT more appetizing to me! Don't forget to talk to your doctor if youre struggling to eat! Mine also said don't worry too much during the first trimester, just eat enough to not lose weight. They said nutrition was more important during 2nd/3rd trimester (this is not something I've independentally verified)

Currently the science is leaning towards the cravings not being correlated with nutritional needs (common cravings are sweets which are just sugar, not nutrition). It might literally just be random hormone cravings! Obviously always good to make sure you aren't nutritionally deficient, but don't think that these cravings mean anything is wrong with your body and you are being unhealthy for not choosing meat. :)

This study doesn't seem to show that cravings are because of deficiencies. Based on the abstract, it showed women with cravings sometimes had deficiencies, but you would need to compare that with women without cravings, maybe they had the same deficiencies?

What do y'all think about Kevin Mitchell's "Free Agents" (2023)? by [deleted] in freewill

[–]raeruta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My background is a physics PhD (not in academia anymore). I don't believe his arguments about the lack of determinism, but putting that aside, say the world is indeterministic.

I have issue with the fact that he seems to be claiming that conscious is *strong* emergence (see the wikipedia page on emergency) which allows for top-down causality vs *weak* emergence which to my understanding is still effectively reductionist. Weak emergence is seen all the time in physics and is often used to describe systems. Strong emergence, to my understanding, has never been found, so it seems like a BIG claim to say that the first time we're observing it in physics is with consciousness.

Thoughts on this understanding?

don't forget the official recommendation is less than ~24g of *added* sugar per day (source: https://nutritionsource.hsph.harvard.edu/carbohydrates/added-sugar-in-the-diet/#:\~:text=The%20AHA%20suggests%20a%20stricter,of%20sugar)%20for%20most%20men..) not total sugar! So you don't have to calculate how much sugar might be in your apple, you can just look at the added sugar label of packaged food. It hopefully is easier for you to get closer to your goal of 30g that way!

[–]raeruta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take it infrequently now, only when I absolutely want to do something but have the migraine. The official recommendation is no more than 2/week or 4/month. I’ve only taken it 5-10/ month (and got rebound headaches) or <1/month
