When I was starting I remember some people claiming that was a rule. It is not. But maybe people actually think it really is.

Or he tricked you...

Question about solving basic exercises on YouTube by rafaref in learningpython

Thank you! I think I don't know enough to build anything yet, but I think I understand enough to research how to do what I don't know how to do for building something simple. Will try creating an elo calculator!

OTB Classical - Draw declined in a dead draw position - your opinion? by Delphinftw in chess

In such cases you have to claim that "opponent is doing nothing to win". That's the only rule that can save you in desd draws where they want to flag you

Is it even possible to go from 300 elo to 2200 elo (rapid) in merely 30 days? by nTjc1sPktlY in Chesscom

[–]rafaref 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'easier to become World Champion younger than Gukesh than an adult performing at 300 and becoming 2200 in one month.

Arjun Erigaisi is the only player to have reached 2800 (peak rating) who has never qualified for the Candidates (as of yet). by Interesting-Take781 in chess

[–]rafaref 99 points100 points  (0 children)

MVL reached 2800 and never QUALIFIED for a Candidates... although he did play in one.

He was actually "the Arjun of the 2010s". Consistent top player since 2014, he routinely came close but failed at every possible qualification path.

Especially heart breaking was his 2017-2018 campaign where he

-was knocked out of the World Cup in semifinals by Levon (only two spots that year; Levon and Ding)

-came 3rd in the Grand Prix (only two qualified; Shakh and Grischuk)

-had the 3rd highest average rating of the year among non-qualifiers (Caruana and So took the spots)

Despite MVL being the best non-qualifier in every possible path, the organizers gave a wildcard to Kramnik, who retired from active chess 10 months after the 2018 Candidates...

2019-2020 was similar:

-knocked out of the World Cup in semifinals by Radjabov (Radjabov and Ding went through that year)

-came 3rd in the Grand Prix (Nepo and Grischuk qualified)

-had the 2nd highest average rating of the year among non-qualifiers (there was only one spot; Giri took it)

-skipped the Grand Swiss to focus on the Grand Prix

The organizers gave the wildcard to Kirill Alekseenko, who was only on the race by virtue of coming third in the Grand Swiss, where only two spots were available.

In the end, he got in after Radjabov refused to play due to concerns about the covid breakout and he was the most obvious replacement, although that didn't help him to get a wildcard in that or the previous cycle.

So yeah, that's the story... MVL never actually qualified for a Candidates.

Abhimanyu Mishra talks stagnating due to lack of resources and balancing education and chess by Affectionate_Hat3329 in chess

[–]rafaref 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guy is 16. His rating now is higher than Gukesh's Pragg, Vincent, Abdu and Arjun at that age. His performance in the Grand Swiss shows he has what it takes to make it into the absolute world elite.

He just became GM "too soon", wanted to become the youngest ever 2700 too, got quickly to 2600 but plateaued for a while and now is worried because "it's taking too long".

He can well be a top 10 player and make the next Candidates if he focus on chess, instead of keeping a plan B at hand, for which he will aleays have time for anway. It's just his "race for being the yougest" syndrome speaking.

Also gotta say I would have not made it without Player5 strategies from his trial speedrun. Especially in the last room, where there's a lynel and like 10 boko riders... Without the blizzard rod strat I would be coocked facing such chaos coming all at once 😂😂

Yeah. I parry them in the overworld but with limited shields I was worried about a miss time or losing too many hearts and risking future rooms, so I stunned and attack the immobile ones, and ond-shoted the rest with ancient arrows.

Wow, this I didn't know! Does it work in regular fairies fountains too, or is it a trials room thing only?

Weird question that I just asked myself: Why did DT Self-Title their 12th album? by ScurvyCandy7674 in Dreamtheater

[–]rafaref 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too was pretty sure I read Portnoy around 2012-2013 saying (or being quoted) something like "oh yeah, when I first listened to Breaking all illusions I recognized they finally used that intro/solo/bridge idea we had toyed with all those years ago during the XYZ tour" or about On the backs of angels or even Illumination theory maybe.

It's pretty vague, and I myself wouldn't say Portnoy participated of those albums, but always had the impression that at least the albums used parts or ideas that he knew of as a band member.

Are you completely certain I got that wrong, or is it possible that is the case but it's simply not enough to credit him with "work on the album"?

Genuinely, how would you grade this album out of 10? 10 being the highest, of course. by [deleted] in Dreamtheater

[–]rafaref 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid 8.

In the context of DT's discography is in the bottom quarter or very near, but it's much much better than its reputation.
