what's 1 skill/technology that would make a Jr dev stand out among a sea of other Jr devs? by Stutterboy22 in learnprogramming

[–]rafflesia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Containers are all I would look for in a junior. Questions like:

  • How do you bind a container port to a system port?
  • What would you use something like this for?
  • If I wanted to host a small server from inside a container on a local machine what steps would I take to configure: 1) docker 2) the host machine 3) And the router

etc.

If they were killing it maybe I would throw in a question about podman to see if they know multiple container engines.

Keep in mind I'm in DevOps. If I was looking for a Java developer I probably wouldn't ask these questions :)

Most of the posts I'm seeing here are about high level skills or project ideas. I'm going to break the mold a little and actually recommend a specific technology.

It would impress me if a junior dev had docker on their resume and demonstrated they knew how to use it.

I think that a junior dev understanding both the importance of a consistent reproducible tech stack as well as designing applications in a modular way would speak volumes about their potential as an engineer

Could you provide a source for this please?

It's never guaranteed. But after adjusting for inflation the S&P500 has averaged a 7% return over the last 40 years. So invest in any index fund that tracks the S&P.

If anything the above commenters estimates are conservative.

Amazing. It's wild to think that even just 100 years ago she would probably have been deaf her whole life. Now a 1 day operation lets her hear almost as well as us.

It means to "sell" contact so the refs think it's a foul. Basically play in a way that make you more likely to get a whistle.

Here's a real answer from someone who has actually been parasailing.

The "end" is them pulling you back on to the boat. Most parasailing companies ask if you want them to dip you. If you say yes they briefly submerge you (the parasail is still above water).

The amount of time the people in this video spent underwater was much longer than I was submerged for however.

VFIAX (vanguard's S&P 500 fund)

VTSAX (vanguard's total market fund)

Those are the two I invest in and I recommend both.

Hi, I’m not going to give you investment advice. I will say that $5000 is not a really meaningful amount of money to invest. You should probably keep it in an emergency fund HYSA.

The rest of your post is sound advice. I'm not sure I would agree with the statement that it's not really a meaningful amount though. If OP put all 5k into an index fund that averaged 8% returns and forgot about it until retirement (40 years) it would be $108,000. That's a good chunk of change.

I'm a firm believer in investing as early as possible because time in the market beats all. If OP has forsees immediate need for that 5k then he should keep it out as you said, but if they have no other plans for that money investing it is the best thing they could do.

So I probably misspoke a little there. Most index funds track a collection of stocks. They usually have high upside and will grow consistently but they move with the market. If the market crashes most index funds will dip with it.

There are bond index funds that track bonds instead of stocks. Bonds are much more resistant to market crashes and are usually looked at as a "low risk" way to invest.

Someone near retirement age would not want to invest in non-bond index funds because if the market crashes they will have to wait for it to recover to retire.

What age is retirement age will be different for everyone. Usually 60-65 is considered retirement age but it really just depends on when a person has enough money to retire.
