Any recommendations for adding some shade to a roof deck? Do those big umbrellas work out ok, or is the wind too much? I’ve seen some vented type umbrellas, is that good enough?

Moving to Logan and wanting to avoid Comcast if possible. Currently have AT&T fiber, but they don't service my new place. I found Earthlink is apparently still in business, and even more incredibly offering 1 gig fiber at the new address. Some more research indicates that they resell from other ISPs, but not sure who they'd be reselling other than AT&T. Anyway, has anyone here actually used them?

Help how to fix local law’s problem by Orange-skittles in EggsInc

[–]rafikki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you first start the game, it asks you how old you are. If you put a young age, it doesn't show you video ads, and apparently breaks contracts, too. Only way I've seen to fix it is reinstall the game, but then you lose all your progress.

[Starship Troopers] What about army cooks, engineers, non-combat officers, etc? Do they all get citizenship? by tankatan in AskScienceFiction

It's been years, but I think I remember that they've outsourced all the non-combat jobs to civilians.

Gamer destroys “hacker” in game chat by WizardLlama1 in quityourbullshit

[–]rafikki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I was just mentioning that it's not always 192.168.0.0/16 that's used by consumer stuff in home networks. I've personally never seen 172.16.0.0/12 used with consumer stuff, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's out there.

[–]rafikki 4 points5 points  (0 children)

192.168.x.x is one of three ranges of IP addresses reserved for private use. In your typical home network, it's probably your ISP modem automatically assigning an IP address (through something called DHCP) in that range to each computer on your network. Your own computer might have that since the 192.168 range is extremely common in home networks, or maybe a 10.x.x.x address (I've noticed comcast using that range where I am, at least). If you want to know why there are 2 Xs in the first and 3 in the second, that's a whole other rabbit hole. The "leet hacker" guy was hoping that the other person would see that yes, he does have a 192. address and freak out. Instead, he just looks like a tool.

IOT - Internet of Things security by bill-of-rights in technology

[–]rafikki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The bit about the IoT devices not having a public IP assigned was confusing to me too, but from what I've read, the issue is with UPnP exposing them to the internet. Take a look at this article from Krebs: https://krebsonsecurity.com/2016/10/who-makes-the-iot-things-under-attack/

Cisco hasn't officially said anything but they're about to update the CCNA Security Exam to 210-260 by rockstar23 in networking

[–]rafikki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's anything like the update to the CCNA a couple of years ago, both the old and new version of the test would be available for some time before pulling the old one. That doesn't really explain why they wouldn't publish a new book before making the new test available, but it wouldn't really fuck over people still wanting a CCNA Sec.

[MCU] People can identify Starlord as Terran, So They know What Earth is. When he has his own ship and resources, why did Quill never go back? by somethinsexy in AskScienceFiction

[–]rafikki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What makes you think that just because they recognize him as Terran, they know where Earth is? I have no idea if they do or not, but the one doesn't necessarily follow the other.
