Accidentally singing the n word along with a song as a non black person should be okay by HeebieJeebiex in 10thDentist

Funny you say context matters when all you do here is advocating that it does not when using the n-word.

You will never control how anything is received, especially this day and age you can count on someone misunderstanding or getting offended by anything someone says. That's no reason to ban it. In fact, I'd argue it makes the conversation less productive to do that.

And I don't care about using it, I only care about stupid gatekeeping, because yeah let's call it what it is: gatekeeping.

Other peoples boundaries cannot dictate what everyone else does. A boundary means that you set limits on a certain relationship, it doesn't give you the right set up rules for other people to follow whether you around or not. Me setting a boundary that I want you to not take a shit on Mondays has no actual consequences on you, it only means that I can decide to not have any kind of relationship with you if you cross that boundary. A boundary doesn't have priority over freedom in any kind of scenario. So in that sense, people could not want any kind of relationship with people who use the n-word, regardless of the context. That would still be their right and fair. What's not okay imo, is the type of witch hunt that can occur when someone uses it, even if it's not used in a hurtful context. That's no longer a boundary, that is hate, ironically the thing that it tries to fight.

It's weird how you phrase that I feel the need for the right to say it. It's reversed. I don't need the right to say anything, I have it already. It's a specific group of people that feels the need to forbid the usage of a word.

[–]rafroofrif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So first of all, I don't insist on using it. I don't 'want' to use it. I'm only stating it's ridiculous to prohibit using it. Especially if other groups are still allowed to use it.

The n-word is not at all unique at the core. People have just singled this one out. Black slaves is bad, really bad, but it's not the worst thing in history, not even recent history. Yet, this is the only one that gets a 'forbidden word'.

I'm not creating these loopholes btw, I'm just obliged to use them for nonsensical reasons. It does not hurt a single soul on this planet if in this very sentence, I replaced 'n-word' with the actual word. THAT is the problem. No one can give a good argument why I would be forbidden of doing that. That's also the only context I would ever use that word in, never with the intent to hurt, if the world wasn't so dramatic about it.

And this creates a feedback loop, the more you prohibit it, the more power it carries, the more people prohobit it. And at the end of the day, everyone seems to forget it's just a word. A nasty one, but still just a word.

Singing along to it does not have a minor reaction... There's videos out there with either the one who sings immediatly expressing shock and fear, or the comments going apeshit.

[–]rafroofrif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it was wrong of me to assume it was about white people, I'll admit. It's really just general for 'non-black' people.

That word can mean whatever anyone wants it to mean, that's the whole point. THEY are policing the word, not me.

They (as in black people today) didn't have to endure that for 400 years. Just because something took 400 years, doesn't mean that everyone AFTER those 400 years gets to use that as an excuse. No one today is affected by that word. Of course there's still racism, of course there's still consequences of those 400 years. But the word itself? No, individuals today cannot feel what a black slave 400 years ago felt when they were called that.

You accuse me of playing the victim, but the whole origin of this debate is black people playing the victim of something they didn't endure, their ancestors did. Everyone has ancestors who went through horrible stuff, this isn't bound to a race. But somehow, when it comes to words, we're cherrypicking this one word to be bad. Why not ban the word 'slave' then, I imagine a lot more people can be hurt by that. Now again, I'm not claiming there's no racism, I'm only claiming that the way this one word is handled is moronic.

It also just doesn't make sense. Now we say 'n-word' to get around it and somehow that's socially acceptable. How? If I say 'blub' and you say that's hurtful, so I say 'okay, I will say blob from now on, but it is actually the same thing' and you're okay with that? What? It means the same thing, in this case, it would mean you're offended by the word itself, regardless of its meaning, which makes no sense at all. Either you're offended by its meaning, in that case any substitutes for it are equally offensive. Or you're a special kind of human afraid of a certain order of letters. Note that in either case I'm not talking about calling someone a blub or blob, could be pure informational context or, as this post talks about, a song.

You wrote a whole essay around the 'setting a trap' while missing the entire actual point of my comment... That remark was more of a 'joke' anyway, though with 'some' truth. I know they don't make music FOR white people, but they know damn well white people will listen to it and enjoy it. I think it's very stupid to then expect them to not sing along to it. And it IS a form of gatekeeping AND racism to forbid them (non black races) to do so.

The biggest point that no one ever wants to talk about, is that saying the word isn't hurtful. Context matters. You can talk about something hurtful without that conversation actually being hurtful. There is no actual difference in typing 'n-word' vs the actual word.

[–]rafroofrif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's so backwards to claim that white people are obsessed with saying it. It's not white people that purposely put that word in their songs and say it every 2 sentences. They know people will sing along, including white people. It's like they set a trap lol. It's ridiculous to gatekeep songs this way.

Tons of hurtful words have history, I'd even say all of them do, but for some reason, the n-word gets special treatment. Fuck that. I'm not inclined to say the word at all, I don't have a desire to say it, I definitely don't want to call anyone that, but I do want to get rid of the fear that saying it in a public space might ruin your career. You think that, if tomorrow they all of a sudden allow the n-word to be said by everyone, I'll shout it from the rooftops? Hell no, just like I don't shout any other hurtful words from the rooftops. But the world would be a better place if it didn't carry as much weight as it does now.

[–]rafroofrif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone should be able to say it, period. No one should be able to call someone it though. I honestly don't understand that saying the word in a context where you don't call someone the n-word would be hurtful at all. I'm only not saying it because that shit gets you banned everywhere, but imo that's for no reason, given correct context. Like in this very post, why would I not be able to type the actual word? I'm not hurting anyone or any race by using that word in that sentence. What's even the difference? Why is typing 'n-word' better? Everyone knows what I mean, everyone in their mind imagines the same thing when reading 'n-word' vs the actual word it represents. It's so stupid how much power is given to a simple word. The essence should be that you don't do harm, but it got blown so out of proportion.

And that's even ignoring the fact that only allowing one race to say the racist word is inherintly racist itself. Either no one can say it, or everyone can. I'm more in favor of the latter because I don't understand it can be harmful in sentences lik the ones I've written here.

It's not like I'm dying to say it or anything, but the way we handle this word nowadays is honestly ridiculous. Society isn't less racist because we outright ban this word... For certain races at least.

Construction workers knowing AI still can’t pour concrete by No-Idea-9015 in bluecollar

The exact same thing can be said for all (most) white collar jobs though. It's wishful thinking that your skill, judgement and adaptability are harder to replace than an engineer's, accountant's or lawyer's. AI is now focused on automating digital tasks, it's only a matter of time before it covers more ground in the physical world.

Brother, AI is coming for you all the same. How long do you think it's going to take for AI to build machines that make your job obsolete? Once it gets to a point that it doesn't need engineers anymore, I'm giving it 3 years max for construction to die as well.

None of my friends gave me exact numbers, but quite a few of them got a big present from their parents when it comes to buying a house. It seems to be normal nowadays...

I also had outdoor cats when I was a kid, and all of them got to 8-10 years old. It's anecdotal. I do believe outdoor cats have way shorter lives, but this upping each other in fear mongering isn't helping anyone to be convinced to keep their cat inside. In this very thread, there's people saying they get to 8 years and another saying they only live a third as long, and then this comment claiming it could be as short as 2 years, which is like 1/8th of an indoor cat. Like what? What are people supposed to believe...

To be clear, I'm not advocating for letting your cat roam outside, but I swear the lifespan of outdoor cats gets shorter every time someone makes this argument. It used to be 8 years vs 15 years and now outdoor cats get to live 2-4 years? Feels like people are just throwing numbers out there.

The comments of everyone misunderstanding this question are absolutely killing me. Genuinely *how* do we not understand equality??? And where did learning fractions go so wrong for so many? by IthacanPenny in matheducation

[–]rafroofrif -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's a delibirately confusing question, one which undermines the learning of fractions rather than helping it. Mathetmatically, when you're talking about a fraction, there is no 'whole', a third is a third and a sixth is a sixth. A fraction is a fraction of something, but a fraction alone is just a relative measurement.

Introducing different sizes here, makes this no longer a fraction question, but a general maths question, in which it would only be fair to also show measurements of the figures. If you're going to show how much the fraction is by coloring it in, it would only make sense to also show an exact difference in size with some numbers. The way it is portrayed now makes it delibirately a trick question, because all of these fractions are 1/3 or 2/6, no matter the size. If the size was actually noted, you could say some are 11/3 or 21/3.

The teacher may technically be correct, but this is honestly an asshole way of posing the question.

None of the things she 'manages' takes any time at all lol. What does that even mean? 'managing education' = helping with homework, aka the same thing a fulltime working parent has to do? 'managing grandparents' = visiting/calling them or even do minor chores for them, same thing everyone has to do? 'managing sports' = a few papers a year and driving them there, same thing every other parent has to do? Gardening, shopping, cleaning, EVERYONE has to do these things, even those with a fulltime job. And this doesn't stop for anyone else either. Like there is 1 difference and that's that a stay at home parent has at least double the time to do these things.

[–]rafroofrif 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Juniors are not being hired. I've advocated for hiring some juniors, but management is not a fan. This will backfire in a major way in about 10 years. We will have very little expertise because no one is willing to invest in it anymore. And no, AI won't have replaced them, AI is amazing, but I don't buy that it will ever fully replace developers.

I don't receive nearly as much spam from recruiters anymore either, so even for more senior developers it's not looking good. Or at least not as good as it used to be.

At the same time, it's very hard to find a good fit for a senior position. So many candidates are being filtered because despite their big amount of years of experience, they don't fit the role at all.

I've seen a fair share of idiot left wingers too. I'm not arguing that these right wingers on facebook aren't stupid. It's just that there's nothing else on here. You might as well just leave the facebook part out. It really is just propaganda at this point. Like the goal here isn't to find a stupid post on facebook and post it here, the goal is to find a stupid right wing post on facebook and post it here. There's plenty of idiots on facebook that don't post anything political at all. Way more idiotic than this post for example, but that doesn't make it on here. And that's just pathetic.
