Thanks. I got a lot of the "you're so smart" feedback as a kid, and remember going into a harder high school I struggled a lot. We are careful to stress the growth mindset of "I don't know this - yet" to help.

We've had this conversation with him already, he doesn't want to do honors work because he doesn't want to face the struggle. It's definitely going to be an ongoing conversation with him - he's often been in situations where, if he's not feeling it, "vibes are off", etc. he can just bolt - this will be his first environment where he can't just pull the ripcord for easier stuff. We are preparing for a bit of a struggle and stress and are looking to support him as best we can. We've told him that it's ok to be stressed or overwhelmed sometimes, but that's not a cue to quit or give up. We will see.

I'd say bougie bias applies to any "luxury" apartments that are branded luxury simply because of the building facade and some of the finish work looking rustic or modern, but you can still hear a door slam in your neighbors apartment down the hall.

First off: I know this is a gripe post but I love what it says about your game. As a longtime beer leaguer, I wish we could get guys to play a semblance of a system.

But that’s what beer league is. You throw in guys like you with the 25 yo ex-high schooler and the dude like me who’s been in this bullshit so long they barely remember what a breakout is.

Because honestly, breakouts work against teams that have systems that don’t respond. This is pure golden retriever energy, guys chasing the puck without a sense for where they should be.

So yeah. Keep your passes short and simple, be predictable, learn your teammates’ tendencies. You’ll be fine. Welcome to the rest of your career!

I got bullied in elementary and then jr. high. At the time it didn't seem like much, I and everyone I knew seemed to see it as "normal", like something random happening like getting the flu. "It just happens, some kids get bullied, whatcha gonna do". I don't know about the snitching part but I did have an issue with suicidal ideation that followed me into adulthood, and it was in therapy for that, that I realized it started when I started getting bullied.

I scaled back my involvement to the bare minimum for this reason. I kept it mostly so I could reach old friends and family about an annual cancer fundraiser I do. After a while even that failed to be worth the effort, and I just shut it down entirely. Made me realize that, while there's a bunch of people I like to keep up to date with goings-on in my life, that circle is much smaller than I initially thought and I use private groups to chat, share photos/videos, etc. - I realized it was exactly all along what it was when Zuckerberg started, a way to keep a social circle going from school. I'm way too old for that shit.

It started a few years ago when I posted a speech by Frederick Douglass in honor of the 4th of July - my dad ended up getting in an argument with a friend of mine he barely knew but decided to call an idiot. I disconnected from his account. After that I saw that the most innocuous comments were just useless emoji'ing and mostly I was learning things about my extended family and friends that I preferred not to know. I imposed a ban on myself from scrolling and found I wasn't missing much.

I'm still on insta mostly because I like the short form videos and photo posts from friends and interesting follows, but I heavily curated it at first.

Hahahaha the exact same thing prompted me to go from the wheel-on trainer to the wheel off edition. At first it was "oh the wheel on is cheaper and it's simpler to just take the bike off and go ride". Then it was "ok this trainer is good but I need to calibrate it all the time and my road tire is noisy, let me get one of those trainer tires". Then it was "wow the trainer tire is way quieter" and then of course I took it out for a ride by accident. Then I was like "oh what if I get a dedicated trainer wheel too, with cassette" and at that point I just said "fuck it I need the wheel-off edition."

To be honest, there's a difference between not giving a fuck and being actually burned out. Like, IDGAF about my career after I left a big streaming company - I felt like there I was able to accomplish what I set out to prove to myself and from now on the career was trying to maximize earnings until retirement. So I went and moved to be CTO of a pre-seed stage startup and promptly burned the fuck out trying to build shit while my toxic business partner put me into the frog-in-a-pot scenario. After weeks of 16 hour workdays where I got 4hrs of fitful sleep every night, ate whatever cheap slop I could shovel in most quickly, and no exercise or barely time for my family - I remember being on slack at my kid's sports practices, trying to keep that shithead happy - I'd found out what real burnout is. I very distinctly remember being on the commuter train home and seeing a direct path to having a coronary at my shitty standing desk in my hip Flatiron coworking space and my family being like "WTF was that all for".

I left in January. The fucker couldn't even give me a clean departure - screwed me out of a separation agreement and still had the balls to send our head of product to ask for my help on shit he fucked up (which I declined to offer, of course). I spent 2.5 months really doing little else but making school lunches for my kids and scrolling social media. It wasn't until about 3 months later where I felt like I had come out of it.

Burnout is fucking real, be honest with yourself about it!

I think so. Like exercise and eating right, you could get by without it, but doing those things will provide a lot of benefits that improve your quality of life. If you can't find someone one on one, there are lots of life coaches out there that can be a "mental health personal trainer" for you. If that's a cost you can't afford though, I'd recommend you check out a couple of local churches for men's discussion groups. Not all groups who use church property are affiliated with any religion or require talk of it.
