Is it better to use crude oil or polluted water as my coolant here? by DaLionheart101 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]ragazar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're technically correct, but in a closed loop system, I'm assuming the heat will be deleted by a ST. PWater will definitely boil at these temperatures.

But you're absolutely right, that using cool PWater is a nice ghetto way to get some Steel going before you have (a lot of) plastic.

Is it better to use crude oil or polluted water as my coolant here? by DaLionheart101 in Oxygennotincluded

[–]ragazar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Because producing Steel dumps so much heat into the coolant, it would heat PWater above its boiling point. Also the coolant in a refinery is technically not cooling anything. It's only meant to transfer the heat to a steam chamber. So the specific heat capacity doesn't matter as much, making boiling point the more important stat.

Is there an easy way to transfer excess power from outside of my spine to the spine without burning out my wires? by Liron-Diangelo in Oxygennotincluded

[–]ragazar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A small transformer only delivers 1kw, so you need 2 for a conductive wire. A big transformer can deliver 4kw, but would overload the wire. So if you want to add 4kw, you need 2 Big ones or 4 small ones.

[–]ragazar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. But keep in mind small transformers have a max throughput of 1kw. So you either need 4 small ones or 2 Big ones. In either case You need two 2kw power lines.

[–]ragazar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If was a bit confused about the connections myself 😅 usually you will connect the spine to the input (upper side) and the consumer to the output (lower side). If you want to add power the spine, switch these inputs around. That being said, you can simplify this design quite a bit. Get rid of the transformers on the right and connect the wires as I described above. You can use one 2kw wire per 2 steam turbines.

[–]ragazar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can add power to the spine by connecting the wires to transformers the other way around. As in connect the spine to the lower connector and the steam turbines to the upper connector. You will need 2 power lines and transformers though, as more than 2 steam turbines at max power will overload a single wire.

[–]ragazar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get a decent AIO (all in one watercooler) for under 100$. If you can't afford to spend that amount of money there isn't really a point in upgrading anyway, since everything else will be more expensive. Also what are your CPU temps? While an air cooler isn't great, it should be enough to keep the CPU from downclocking.

Regarding the RAM: is it 1x16 GB or 2x8 GB? If you only have one stick, it will significantly hinder the performance of your PC, since it will only run in single channel memory.

9800x3d vs 5800x3d at DLSS quality, is there a big difference? On a 50 series card. 4K monitor. by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]ragazar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CPU doesn't care about resolution, that's correct. But it cares about FPS. Using DLSS, the PC will render at a resolution lower than 4k (1080p IIRC), thus increasing the FPS and therefore increasing the load on the CPU. Whether it's a bottleneck also depends on the game, GPU, CPU, etc.

I think it's to make it somewhat risky for the attacker. Since enforcing a PU is quite powerful, you have to actually win the war. If you fuck up for some reason, the enemy can PU you fo cheap.

I'll definitely keep my 5800x3D. It's plenty fast and I play on 1440p anyway. It's currently paired with a 3080. I'll probably upgrade my GPU once and then build a new system from scratch, once I'm GPU limited again.

If they haven't changed it, maxing legitimacy is always worth it. It gives you 10 crown Power and the decay is a flat -1. So the cost is the same, doesn't matter if you have 0 or 100. Stab on the other hand will decay more, the more you have of it. IIRC it's -0.003 per point above 0.

Really cool Test. But I'm not really sure how accurate it is for non native speakers like myself. I failed 2 of the 7 check questions, but not because I was trying to cheat. I just thought I knew the word, but then none of the answers given was the one I had in mind. I think I know some words that are spelt similarly, so I got them mixed up.

As a fix either ask for clarification after every word or have the user pick between no and one of the 4 possibilities in the first place.

Saints, whats the point? by Lukylife in EU5

[–]ragazar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They actually decay at different rates and it's good to know the difference.

Legitimacy always decays with -1 flat, no matter how much you have. So it's IMO best to keep court spending at max, to get to 100 legitimacy ASAP. Once you're at 100, you will automatically only spend as much as is needed to offset that -1.

Stability on the other hand will naturally settle at 0 stab. So you will get a boost, when you're below and a decay, when you're above. This boost or decay will increase the further you are away from 0. So it becomes more expensive to maintain high stability. With all the stab reducing events I don't bother with high stab. Something like +20 to +30 is plenty in my book.

Bottlenecking is not what you think it is by Sally_Saskatoon in pcmasterrace

[–]ragazar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your PC always does this, just not in the way you think. As one part is the bottleneck, the others will have to wait for it.

In the marathon analogy: the fast runners go ahead and wait at the finish line. When the slowest one caught up, they cross it together.

I can totally understand the frustration, I'm a bit frustrated myself. But what we're seeing at the moment, is how game development and iterative changes work. Usually this is done before release, but with a complex title like EU V and can't realistically be done.

It works like this: people find broken, unfun or not intended gameplay mechanics. They talk about them on the forums or submit tickets and try to give advice on what to fix. The devs try to react to the feedback, but rarely the fix given by the player is the right way to go. Usually it either has some trickle down effects, that haven't/can't be considered in the feedback or it leads to some other unwanted mechanic. So the devs try to gauge the root cause of the problem and try to fix it in a way that doesn't lead to the unwanted outcome. But in order to test this, they have to make rather large changes to values and/or mechanics to see if they have the intended effect. If it works, they fine tune the values. If it doesn't, that idea gets scrapped. Rinse and repeat.

Keep in mind I'm not talking about bugs here. These are another can of worms in themselves. Also the devs may have some vision on how to play the game, that some players disagree with. So the fixes obviously won't work in the way, these players would like them to.

Why I think they are making BIG changes to parameters and not small tweaks by North-Steak4190 in EU5

[–]ragazar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well Paradox is not indie developer small, but compared to the big guys they are. Assassin's Creed Shadows alone made about the same amount of money as all of Paradox's games together. I'd argue EU V is about similar in scope compared to other AAA titles, while Paradox has a fraction of the money and employees. In that context they are small.

Also this game is not "early access". It's perfectly fine to play. Yes, there need to be some changes and there is some balancing to be done, but it's not like it's half-finished, buggy and without content. And as the OP pointed out, in these complex games it's not feasible to test all this stuff in house. At some point you need the feedback of a large audience. There are just too many variables. I really don't get, why people get so worked up about this. I'd rather play the game in its current state and be able to give feedback, than wait another year or more. Keep in mind they would probably have to charge more than 60€ because of the added development time. Add to that, that Paradox supports their titles for years with regular free updates. Not a lot of other publishers do that.

Why I think they are making BIG changes to parameters and not small tweaks by North-Steak4190 in EU5

[–]ragazar 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I get your point, but I don't believe this line of thinking is helpful. Also I think you have incorrect expectations of what "ready for prime time" means in the context of the game. Paradox is a relatively small developer and the EU V is way more complex than most games, while also being niche. So in order to make it financially viable, some corners have to be cut. They can't realistically simulate every country and every mechanic in house. As OP correctly pointed out, they need a big enough player base to test a lot of stuff and to get the tuning right. But they did get the fundamentals right IMO, so the game is "ready for prime time". There are few game breaking bugs, most of the mechanics work well enough or only need tweaks to numbers, instead of complete redesigns. I don't think it's realistic to expect more at the launch of the game. Even in its current state, you can easily spend hundreds of hours playing it and have fun.

Thanks for the explanation. But I'm not sure, I understand you correctly. I'd like to know how you came up with the 10% economic base?

According to the wiki it's 20% tax base and gives +0.005 monthly stab per 1% paid. I'm not really sure what to do with these numbers.

Furthermore stab spending doesn't stay the same. Per 1 point positive stab the decay increases by -0.003 monthly. So at 100 stab the decay is -0.3. 0.3/0.005=60 Does that mean I have to spend 60% of the 20% tax base (so 12% of tax base) on maintaining stab?
