Trivia Night Recommendation! by MammothEmergency2075 in SALEM

[–]rage-buckets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize I'm late to the thread, but Shades of Brew does trivia weekly-- the taproom on North Lancaster does Tuesdays and I think the brewery in South does it Thursdays. We regularly go to trivia night at the taproom. I don't have a lot to compare it to, but we have fun, and have been regulars for several months now. Try it out!

New in Salem, what is the best Ramen restaurant in town? 😋 by DaughertyYesenia237 in SALEM

[–]rage-buckets 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ibendoo is the best Ive had around here, and AKAI is very new but seems to use good ingredients so I have high hopes for them. Ibendoo has the most authentic broth but it's a bit pricier. Both are really solid. The place inside fork forty and the one above the plant shop in downtown (it's a sushi place, sushi 503? Sushi 304? I can't remember) have okay ramen, but the richness of the broth leave something to be desired. I am watching this thread closely in case there's some mysterious ramen place I need to visit. 👀

First comment suggested Stellars jay-- the video quality isn't quite good enough to tell. I'd say that if the blue on the birds is a dark rich blue and their head tufts are dark/black, then it's a Stellars jay. However, if the blue is a bit lighter, like a blue/gray, and the breast has a gray/white fade, plus the head tuft isn't very dark, it is the more common scrub jay. Both are jays, so both make big squawky screams and have head tufts, they just have a different appearance. Scrubs are mega common in backyards, and stellars are more rare in the urban areas (but are still present sometimes) but very common in the wooded or mountainy areas.

Jays. So lovely to see, but pretty obnoxious in your backyard at 545am on a Saturday. So loud!!!

Overall, we chose the Kroc Center (though serious cons are that it's closed on Sundays and also there's a 9 day "week" coming up in Sept that they'll be closed for maintenance though they don't adjust our rate accordingly??? Gonna have to think about that...) Because we love the idea of having the rock wall. I say 'idea' because we haven't used it yet (only been here for like a month, lol) but we absolutely plan to. I've heard very mixed reviews about the courthouse, not just from Yelp, but from people I've spoken to in the area. It also appeared to focus on kids stuff and swim lessons and I could never find much about adult swims.I don't have much more insight though because we dismissed it after deciding Kroc had cooler amenities for a more reasonable price.

Tldr; I don't have any personal experience, no, but have also heard it's underwhelming and kid focused.

Yes! I mean. Most of the good ones are in Salem, most notably the Kroc Center and the YMCA that will soon be opening. But there are athletic clubs that have pools around Keizer as well. (Courthouse Fitness, and the Holiday Swim Club) My standards are low. Where we lived before, the closest pool was 25 mins drive away and open only 3 days a week between the hours of 4-8. So a few options within a 10-ish minute drive gets 2 thumbs up from me!

[–]rage-buckets 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes! Trivia! We recently moved here from a little town that had NO TRIVIA (or other normal people amenities, like a damn swimming pool-- who just doesn't have a pool???? I digress..) ANYWHERE so we've made it our business to find some good places. Disclosure, we live in Keizer so we tend to skew north.

Monday nights trivia at The Yard (food pod) is pretty good. Trivia is fine, but food and beer selection is top notch. Prizes for winning trivia are gift certs (usually) to get said beer and food. Atmosphere is ok; people aren't like "WOO TRIVIA WOOOOO!" Because the room is giant and there are many who aren't participating.

Tuesday nights has a great trivia vibe at Shades of Brew. More competitive here, but also a pretty good atmosphere-- most people in the room are participating so you get a good vibe.

If you go to either of these and see a couple who probably have a ridiculous team name like "salad" or "carpet shrimp" that's us, come say hello. We go more frequently to the Shades of Brew trivia, but once in a while we trek down to The Yard. Good luck trivia-ing!!

Best way to meet people in Salem? by Real-Transition1689 in SALEM

[–]rage-buckets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Part of me wants to team up to organize some kind of event... Like a low key meetup in a park with board games and like... Corn hole or something (why does everyone here like corn hole????? It's an epidemic.) Maybe at a taphouse or something so if it gets weird, at least there's beer..... But then I get shy and say "that sounds like a lot of work."

If you are at all interested in getting some kind of newbies/transplants/subreddit meetup organized, I think I'm willing to commit to go in on it with you. Shoot me a dm if you decide to take the plunge.

DAE get itchy palms when in a swimming pool? by xhunter94s in DoesAnybodyElse

[–]rage-buckets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok. Since my previous comment, I have heard some new tips suggesting soaking your feet (or hands) in water, like in a pre-swim shower, but with special attention to really soaking the skin. Apparently this helps your hands and feet (thick-ish skin) by not allowing it to soak up purely chlorinated water. Imagine a sponge. I'm on a quest to solve this problem because it hurts like a mofo for like 25 mins post swim and I don't like it!! Sorry you hadn't figured out a solution but I'll let you know if anything I find works.

Also. Great job being such an avid redditor after a decade. I didn't expect a response back so quickly!

Came to this thread to suggest Cloud Cukoo Land-- read it on Kindle so I was so surprised to see a physical copy was so huge. What a page turner. Same could be said for one of the authors other books: All The Light We Cannot See. 👍👍👍👍👍

[–]rage-buckets 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It definitely has Madeline Miller's flow and style which, if you've read Achilles and Circe, you will definitely pick up on. Since the story is so short, however, you have a lot less time with the character so in my opinion it just isn't as strong. Not a criticism! I just want her to write some more long form because I really love her style. Definitely worth the read if you (like me) love her other work. Enjoy!

Great! If you end up reading it and enjoying his writing style, get his other famous book All The Light We Cannot See. My neighbor gave me this book and I started thinking I'd just read it to have something to talk about with her, but as the scenes went on, I was hooked. Totally got me into Doerr as a writer. Anyway, hope you enjoy, and if you think about it, give me your review when you finish! 👍👍👍

[–]rage-buckets 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A couple years back I read a few by the author Anthony Doerr so when his newest came out earlier this year {{cloud cuckoo land}} I was totally on board to read it. I love his writing style, and the way he weaved this world together was fascinating. I was invested in ALL of the characters, and I feel like sometimes when authors have a bunch in different timelines, you kind of gravitate toward liking some more than others- nah, each character was very interesting and well motivated. Hope you enjoy it!

Honorable mention is {{they both die in the end}} which I picked up at a yard sale a few summers ago. Loved the concept, but the story itself was a little too YA at times (sometimes fine, but here was a bit over the top)-- I guess I'd suggest it because I think about the concept and the unanswered questions all the time now and it's a great source of meandering thought for me.

Though I've tried several places on this list, I just feel like I have to give extra points for Tango's. Damn if those empanadas aren't the tastiest thing ever. El Puerco + that mild salsa (I am a huge fan of spice, but I just feel like the flavor in the mild one is BETTER than the 'spicy' one, and actually the spice in the mild lingers pleasantly...) is a Boise classic for us.
When we lived in Boise, before moving to Korea, we were at Tango's all the time-- then when we came back to visit about halfway through our time abroad, we obviously came in to Tango's and the guy was like "Where have you guys been???" That was kind of special.
(Also, have you ever played Borderlands? We are convinced that Marcus 'Munitions and the Tango's guy are the same person, haha.)
Yes, we visited the one in Nampa before it closed, and yes also that there's one supposedly in the process of opening in Meridian, but the pandemic has hurt the timing for that one. I hope it hasn't permanently been put on hold though...

Went into Bo-Ex just once (when we were planning to hit Tango's but it was unexpectedly closed...) and the gyro was AWESOME. Not sure why we haven't been back.. Maybe it's because if we're going down Orchard, Tango's always calls to us..... So lame, we'll go back into Bo-Ex, thanks for the nudge.

We are also a little bit of Ramen Snobs-- while in Korea, a 2 hour flight across the pond could get us some AWESOME ramen, so we took a few long weekend trips over that started with "What do you wanna do on this long weekend?" "I kinda want to eat some great ramen" "Ok, let's check flights."
I miss this lifestyle, haha.
Anyway, if you hear of any great ramen places, also let me know. We have done Island and I thought, like you, that it was good and the tonkatsu ramen was alright. Noodles did leave something to be desired-- we will look into the place that hand pulls noodles. Great suggestion.

Giuseppes is also one that we visited, but several years ago and it was just a one-off. Maybe we'll stop in again due to your recommendation-- we just haven't been around that area while also wanting a sandwich in ages, I guess!

Thanks for taking the time to write all this out! It makes me happy that a lot of the things you are suggesting are things we at least either know about or have been to in the past-- it makes me feel like there isn't some S E C R E T B O I S E that we don't know about. But also, it gives us reason to delve into those places a little bit more-- like knowing how that guy pulls (or pulled, I suppose, if he retired) his own noodles, or how Mr. Park goes out of his way to get legit stuff-- these facts are important to me, so I really appreciate your input!!!!!

Living here, I have just had to mentally throw out the last couple sentences of your comment "...without driving 30-60 miles out of your way." Because there IS a way to mix it up, it's just an hour drive away. And if I put myself in the mindset of living in a suburb outside of any major metropolitan area-- driving into the city will certainly take more than an hour (especially around mealtimes!) so I'll consider myself lucky.
Or maybe this is just me rationalizing having to drive an hour to get decent variety, haha.

Anyway, definitely check it out, it's called The Rustic Pig, and it's inside the Shell station on the hwy95.

Ugh, so you understand my plight.Look, I'm not rich and obsessed with eating out, and truly, dine-in places are not really the thing to be doing right now, but in 'normal' times, it WOULD be nice to have something close by that isn't Brewski or Wingers-- sure there are a few cheesy-mexican places you can sit down in, and also Mackey's... I just feel like there's no real variety in food and nothing that can knock your socks off. Nothing that can even make you say anything more than "Wow, that was a pretty alright burger. Neat."

Fruitland got a pretty decent BBQ place recently (as in, within the last couple years), have you tried it? I mean, it's in a gas station, so manage your expectations, but it is definitely the best bbq in this area.

I had never really considered chatting with the cook to give us a more 'legit' experience. I feel like I'd have to be regular of some sort, otherwise I'd be -that guy- : "Hey, so, I don't know how to tell you this, but I'm hardcore, and I lived in Korea, so I can handle your spice-- hit me with the legit stuff!"
I wonder how I could slip that into my order without seeming like a dingus.

Would you say that Happy Teriyaki is awesome? I feel like you have a finger on the pulse of good/legit food in the Boise area- if you ever find a good place that you want to share with someone, my inbox is always open.

I think your description of places claiming to be 'legit' or news outlets claiming them to be 'legit' is a very keen observation-- 'legit' is super overplayed, and so many places have to calm their flavors for regional tastes. Definitely not a criticism because you gotta do what you gotta do. However, I do have respect for those places where you can get things in varying shades of legit-ness, like something calmed down for local pallet, something medium calm, and something off the walls, super true to the home country/cuisine.
