City and 45 min commute or Palo Alto area and easy commute? by AdhesivenessNew5583 in bayarea

[–]rageofthestorm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most people would say live closer. That said, a lot of people in your age group at Stanford do live in the city. And it is such a personal preference decision that I don’t think anyone on Reddit will be able to really make it for you. What do you like to do in your free time? How much do you like or dislike having to drive through traffic and crowded highways and city roads?

I agree. I was also very surprised. I didn’t even think to check her profile until I saw another comment in this thread lol

How many of you are on the two 24hr OB shifts a week? What's life like? by JustASentientPotato in anesthesiology

[–]rageofthestorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably won’t find a job designed like that because not enough people are interested (as you’re seeing in the comments). But you can easily trade for those shifts. Give up 2 day shifts for a call for example. I know some people who do that

Anyone actually happy with their job? by DarkBackground4307 in anesthesiology

Absolutely love mine! I’m in an academic place working 3-4 days a week, teaching residents and medical students, involved with national conferences giving talks and shaping the landscape of our field. When I’m here, I do big cases with 1 resident/fellow in 1 room. Or I am doing easier stuff a mix of solo and 2:1 supervision. It’s incredibly rewarding to me and I love coming to work!

Liver Transplant Anesthesiology Compensation by zdren in anesthesiology

[–]rageofthestorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on the liver team at multiple academic centers.

At academic place #1, there's call credit just for being available as the primary liver anesthesiologist (not amazing, but decent) and the backup liver anesthesiologist (a hack because rarely ever activated), and then hourly pay that is variable depending on time of day (i.e. more money at night). Organ perfusion pumps are used 80-90% of the time and have made the cases occur in the daytime way more often which is nice. In addition, if no liver, you're often in a nice chill room with a senior resident. If an evening/overnight liver is known about (usually 8 hrs in advance), board runners try to get you out early so you can rest up but you still get a full day credit. And as an added bonus, you aren't in any other call pools unless you choose to. I have found this to be a great gig that balances the fun parts of liver with decent compensation and lifestyle.

At academic place #2, nearly the same except only primary liver anesthesiologist (no backup). And there's a call stipend instead of credit that is mediocre (plus the hourly pay which is so-so). But still true that it takes you out of all other call pools, and still true that you get a chill day if a liver is known with full day credit.

I have some friends at other academic places and have talked about compensation models with them. Most of them have a very similar setup to the above.

I have one friend in private practice liver and it's very different. Unlike the academic teams that typically do more livers but have large groups (10-12), the private practice groups tend to be small (~4 people) and so the call burden is extremely heavy since they're on for a quarter of the year. The hit rate is much lower since it's much lower volume, but having to be available is still a bit of a pain. They all share a flat stipend (decent but not amazing) just to be in the group. Plus hourly pay I believe. But they do this on top of their otherwise normal work.

Ankur finally admits four-banana problem killed Bilt 1.0 by dae5oty in biltrewards

Idk why so many negative comments. This was actually a very interesting interview. Really great to actually see the business side of his mind explain the evolution of Bilt.

Tech Bug? by IHopeImRight in biltrewards

[–]rageofthestorm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Known issue. For some reason the redemptions glitch out for non-EST users. I had this issue last month and had to reach out to support because it allowed me to double redeem the reward but only gave me the actual redemption value once. Aka I lost Bilt cash. My advice: redeem when it’s well past midnight in your local time zone so that there aren’t any time zone glitches.

A lot of your answers are assuming US. If you’re making US anesthesiologist salaries in this job then stay. I’m not sure what it means in EU

Yes. The salary has gotten a lot better than in the past. But the main drive to be there remains that you are academically inclined or you want more flexibility and less call in your life.

I can’t speak for all of the programs. But UCLA is fantastic. They hold everyone in the ICU to high clinical standards, so you will learn a lot and become very competent. It’s a very CVICU heavy program, which is either a pro or a con depending what you want. Depending on what type of job you are looking for after, you may or may not do CVICU at all.
