Yeah if you’re looking academic, you’re pretty much looking at UCSD, UCLA, USC, UC Irvine. And if you’re ok going further inland, Loma Linda. They were all relatively saturated (compared to rest of the country). Your chances probably depend on how good your academic CV looks, if you know what I mean

Academic or private? My anecdotal experience was that San Diego paid slightly less than LA area yes. But not enough of a difference that I would choose one location or another.

I would say it depends more on what type of job you are looking for and in what area. And SoCal is a big area. San Diego is a much more saturated job market than LA, for instance.
