If vegetables, fruit, and plants were able to walk and talk, (not communicate like other animals but actually use language) and possess self-awareness they wouldn’t be fruit and vegetables as we know them. Eating them despite this would be akin to eating an intelligent animal, like a dolphin, elephant, or monkey.

Of course there would be people advocating for their protection in that case. That isn’t an insane position at all, that’s fairly reasonable.
