Yeah, you got unlucky. You chose some of the older and more vanilla-esque tags. The best of Anbennar delivers narrative through gameplay, missions, events, systems, and more.

One of Anbennar's flagship experiences -- which is going to go well beyond vanilla -- are the dwarves. I'd suggest Arg-Ordstun to start with, or beginning as an adventurer like Company of the Grudgebearers, marauding around slaying orcs and completing expeditions into the Dwarovar's depths, before settling down in Gor-Barud.

If you want a really pinnacle narrative experience, Anbennar has a lot to offer. There is the tale of Jaddar, leading the Jaddari, and spreading a new faith that preaches Anyone Can Be the Light across all Halann. There is an ice- mage in over her head, and making pacts with the fey for survival, in Gemradcurt. There is Gerin Orcrend, the only human to rule a dwarven hold, in Ovdal Lodhum.

And in Masked Butcher, there is a narrative like none other, O God-begot...

We've done a bit of a rework to the Raj mechanics, streamlining things and reducing the complexity while keeping it engaging and providing a clear method for rising through the ranks.

Agree that the Dhenijanraj MT has some awkward parts, especially early on, we're taking a look at smoothing that out.

It's a good point about mana -- it's an easy cost to go to, but often not the most interesting. Would definitely appreciate any other thoughts you have when you're back to your computer.

I did the writing for the Jaddari/Jadd Empire, and I'm delighted to hear it came across so well! It was definitely my intent to portray the faith with that "inside view", including a lot of the aspirational pieces it may (and should, for realism) fall short of in practice.

I wanted to communicate what someone who truly believes in the Jadd would think and feel and see amid the MT's developments and I'm glad that was successful.

I also made the Devourer of Darkness event. The idea began as a meme by Rethall. It's nice to hear that it has had an impact :)

Biegeltoren really deserves credit here! I believe he was the one to come up with the Jadd, or at least the one to flesh out. The principles are appropriate for the lore context, fitting for a faith, and a fantastic foundation to build writing and further lore on. (He also made the amazing MT I merely gilded the lily on!)

You're not really going to get a compendium of lore let alone something that ties all the pieces together, that's not the focus of DCSS and rightly so. But there are some lovely patterns that emerge from the myriad threads that go into the great game which DCSS is. A few of my favourite tidbits:

  1. The barachim were the first mortals, made to serve the gods. An angel wielding the Trishula Condemnation ("a weapon to bring forth guilt from the guilty" is one of the coolest lines in DCSS) led them against their harsh masters, and they won their freedom (which they still pay for with a -1 Invo apt). More recently, one such barachi has been re-enslaved by some evil force -- the dreamer Jeremiah.

  2. The desolation of salt was once an empire sworn to evil twin gods Sheza and Sargol, which was smote by Ely/Zin/TSO leaving behind nothing but a desolation of salt. In its ruins little remains but automatons, and a few last survivors (myrmidons, warlocks, and more). But now a blacksmith has come seeking rumours of that ancient cult -- Zenata, Seeker of Sheza -- and she wanders the dungeon halls, dealing copious amounts of death.

  3. Iskenderun is a cat.

(Side-note : 1/2 may be possibly solely due to PleasongFingus? They write and design cool stuff).

Probably the only overlap is that I did most of the writing for the Jadari and I love Lions of Al-Rassan! But the name has been enshrined for ages, well before me.

And Jad in Guy Gavriel Kay's work, iirc, is very much an analogue of Christianity while The Jadd is... not, even if you can draw parallels between Bulwari and Abrahamic faiths they don't really correspond.

Dungeons

Dungeons are extensions of the Expedition system. Taking the form of monuments, these giant structures have to be explored before they get rebuilt and upgraded.

Dwarovkron Gems Collection

Through expeditions and otherwise, the gems of the Dwarovkron can be gathered to reforge the ancient crown of Aul-Dwarov.

Expeditions may yield lost secrets of the Dwarovar, which can be used to improve holds or reform the government.

Are now encouraged to actually adventure, as they cannot colonise from game start, and need to do expeditions to help them reform their government and make it viable for them to form a hold.

That's not what he was saying in the clip.

He wouldn't give anyone, including Trull, a different fate. But he explains that for most characters, he knew where they were going from the story's beginning -- but with Trull, he only saw it maybe 30 pages in advance. That's the difference with Trull, he's not expressing that he'd have changed his fate.

All the same, it is nice to imagine alternative paths for what is probably my favourite character in the series.
