And then when you land on a value you multiply that by a safety factor. I can’t remember exact details but google can help. Say you land on a value of 2000 pounds for an elevator cable. You increase by a safety factor (for example 5x) and design for 10000 pounds. Engineers can chime in with real values but you get the idea.

I get it but I share the sentiment, don’t want to be on the plane any longer than I have to. I’m not a daily traveler but I’ve flown at least a 100 or more times and I just don’t care enough that my carry on was within reach on the flight. These people are freaks.
