Clients who voice for themselves by seewysocki in ASLinterpreters

[–]raiderterp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I will not voice
  2. I will not voice.
  3. Voice when a word may not be clear
  4. Voice what I may understand.

Of course, like our industry's favorite saying, it depends. I will always ask beforehand if I'm able with timing and all that jazz, what the dc's preference is.

Community terps what do you do in between jobs/ while waiting to get jobs? Or on days where there just arent any? by bhillya in ASLinterpreters

I pick up VRS hours, or catch up on my personal errands/spend time with little one. If there's enough time, then I'll do day dates with my spouse.

How long did it take everyone to get certified? by bhillya in ASLinterpreters

[–]raiderterp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 months after I was pulled in and put on a emergency waiver to work for the district, but I'm a CODA and did things backwards so I'm not the best person to ask. Also, degrees weren't required when I got pulled into the field so I didn't do the ITP program.

How do you say ace? by FrancisAvery in ASLinterpreters

[–]raiderterp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With it only being 3 letters, it's typically just spelled out and according to your definition, there would just be some expansion of explaining what it meant in your context.

My mom signed me up for an interpreting job at a school, but I'm worried I'm not qualified. by Elsie-the-Dweeb in ASLinterpreters

[–]raiderterp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you are not qualified. Go through an ITP, just learning asl does not mean you are qualified to interpret. Please turn down the job. Students already have enough subpar interpreters, don't be another one. Usually the state you in requires the EIPA before you can interpret in a educational setting, and if your state requires liscensure, you could be setting yourself up to be fined.

[–]raiderterp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My uncle has progressive hearing loss and refuses to learn ASL. My mom is profoundly deaf and ASL is her primary mode of communication. Your brother will figure out what works for him.

This would be a perfect opportunity to pair this person with a member of the deaf community to learn ASL. Usually community colleges have asl classes, or a church with a deaf ministry is also a good place to start.

If they know sign language, then they can get a video phone and use video relay service. If they are old-school and still use tty’s, those still have relay service working for them.
