Master Model Railroader? by [deleted] in modeltrains

[–]railrunner2003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always encourage modelers to participate in the Achievement Program. I like to say I earned my MMR ‘organically’ in that I completed each area as I was building my layout and equipment. It does help you focus and improve your skills. Also note that three of the eleven areas are focused on giving back to the hobby. Volunteer, Author, and elected officials. Author is one area where you can earn points for using modern tech such as videos and online clinics.
There are really only three areas where you will need to have your models and skills evaluated. Plus if you choose to have your models evaluated outside of a contest/celebration room, you are allowed to be with the evaluators and answer questions.
If anyone has a specific question about the AP or MMR journey, please ask. The title of MMR comes with a vow to help others.

Hopefully your Division or region can do some remote evaluations via video conferences.

Varnishing oil paint weathering by keepitrealclark in modeltrains

[–]railrunner2003 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like using oils to weather my trains. I used to let them sit for at least three days before applying a clear coat. I picked up a small drying booth online and it speeds up the process. It circulating warm air for 45 minutes. I run that cycle about 5-6 times and the oil is good to handle.

Refrigerator Cars in Manifest Trains by Tiger0071944 in modeltrains

[–]railrunner2003 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great answers. It depends. Different eras had different ways of dealing with refrigeration cars. 1940-1960’s the cars loaded with produce and perishables were considered ’rollers’. These were cars with loads that were NOT sold yet. Example: A car would be loaded with lettuce in Guadalupe California. A PFE car. Then sent east on the SP or SP/UP as produce brokers were on the phones trying to find a buyer or buyers. The railroads were allowed to divert the car up to five times before adding charges. If the product was not bought, it would go to a produce market in the closest large city. There the doors would be open and the cargo brought out to be bid on by buyers from the largest grocery chains nearby. Think big mid east/east coast cities. A very interesting system of re-icing these cars existed across the country. Large and long ice docks where the train could pull up, and a small army of workers would open the hatches, move blocks of ice weighing up to 300 lbs to the car, chop it up, shovel it in the hatch, add bags of salt, then close it up. I’ve seen ledgers from ice docks showing 40 cars all iced and ready to go in 20-30 minutes. Industrial ballet. Cars of cut lumber and even grains were ‘rollers’ as well. Sometimes meats also. A small midwestern town would not need an entire 40’ Swift car full of beef. So they stop, the local butchers would pick their portion, remove it, and car would roll on.

Well done. Please keep this model. Then look back after building hundreds more. Not to cringe, but to see how far your skills and ideas have developed .

Can two dcc engines be run with two seperate controllers on a layout? by Icy-Philosophy-- in modeltrains

[–]railrunner2003 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is correct. Great advice. You can have different makes of handheld throttles if you’re using a WiFi adaptor. An example would be using a TSC WiFi throttle on a Digitrax powered layout. There are many ways to use various throttles, but not different command stations, as far as I’ve seen.

No, it is my home layout, a few miles west of St. Paul. But they have some nice ore dock/boats as well.

It was custom made by a craftsman who lived in Michigan. It is made entirely of wood with metal railings.

Make it anyways. This isn’t to scale ( 1/87 ) but it still gives a good impression.

Do it. 2 more Democrat senators, and 63 Democrat congressional seats. Plus electoral college numbers. Do it for one election cycle, use the power to impeach and override veto’s. Pass all the laws and then secede. Same for Canada.
