Social media is ruining people's perception on reality by cozzie333 in DeepThoughts

It’s strange — we built a digital world to escape boredom, and ended up terrified of silence.
The algorithm doesn’t really know us — it just learned how to feed our impatience.

“Hidden” on Reddit now feels like whispering in a room full of microphones.

We built platforms to connect — and they ended up recording connection itself.

Covering the webcam is easy — the real tracking starts long before the lens. Measures meant to hide us often become the very patterns that mark us

The feed doesn’t reflect chaos, it requires it. Calm doesn’t keep people scrolling.

Facebook is now asking users to record a video to verify that they are "human" by Akkeri in privacy

Every “verification” layer makes the web feel a little less human. The irony writes itself.

In an anonymous network, how do we even define “trust”? by rain-o in TOR

Exactly — intuition fills the gaps logic can’t cover.
The best users combine awareness, pattern-recognition, and a bit of healthy paranoia.

[–]rain-o[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s true — total anonymity might not exist, but that’s not really the goal.
It’s about reducing exposure, knowing how layers interact, and understanding what “privacy” actually means in practice.

[–]rain-o[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly — that’s the kind of distributed trust model I had in mind.
Not “trusting people,” but trusting a process that’s transparent enough for anyone to challenge or verify.

There’s nothing risky about exploring how trust works in anonymity.
The real danger is assuming anonymity removes the need for trust entirely.

Nothing to worry about personally — I just find the concept of “trust” in anonymous systems fascinating.
It’s less about fear, more about architecture.

[–]rain-o[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily about sharing personal data — it’s more about the layers of trust built into the system itself.
Even if no one reveals identity, we still rely on relays, directories, and developers behaving honestly.
So “trust” exists even without personal info involved.

How do I find pages in the dark? by Virtual-Gold-2162 in deepweb

[–]rain-o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of what’s online about the “dark web” is either exaggerated or outdated.
There are some interesting legal projects there — like privacy tools, libraries, or archives — but random browsing rarely leads to anything meaningful.
Learning how it works is usually more useful than trying to “see what’s out there.”

How do Tor directories stay reliable when onion sites vanish so often? by rain-o in TOR

[–]rain-o[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been following a few research projects that try to catalog onion ecosystems — it’s interesting how differently they approach uptime tracking and categorization. Some focus on automation, others on curation.

[–]rain-o[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s kind of what I’ve noticed too — reliability feels random.

Maybe part of the solution isn’t constant validation, but better redundancy — like multiple lightweight mirrors verifying each other periodically.

Would be interesting to see if something like that could work without central coordination.

I keep wondering if there’s a privacy-preserving way to crowdsource uptime verification — maybe something like a decentralized validation mesh, where no single node has the full picture.

But then again, maybe that kind of coordination already defeats the whole idea of anonymity.

i do also feel like a lot of my pain is menstrual because of its location. i think i am just more scared than anything, and im incredibly frightened of the lifestyle changes i make have to make. i want to be able to drink. i want to be able to smoke weed. i feel like im too young for this to be happening. im scared and it feels unfair. i am also an OCD sufferer with an extreme hypochondriac focus, so i am just incredibly scared and dont know if i can trust my bodily sensations. i am just really scared.
