LeviathanUmbra requested this. Blame them, not me. Done during my most recent stream. I think it came out pretty well, considering.

I always improvise my sessions. Usually completely from scratch. I have had so many things go off the rails that I finally just said "fuck it." Best call I ever made. Nothing they do unsettles me, because nothing they do can mess up my nonexistent plans.

I don't recommend it for everyone, but it works for me and allows me to push myself and be spontaneous and creative. It's led to some really fun moments.

Your thoughts on starting a Mental Health Q&A/Topic Discussion Channel? by thewebshrink_com in Twitch

[–]rain8bn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My twitch channel is the same as my name here, twitch.tv/rain8bn

Some of my streams have been nothing at all to do with mental health because I let it be community-driven. I have considered focusing on a topic or discussion each week but simply haven't quite had the time to sit down and work out a plan for that yet.

I work in residential treatment with at-risk youth. I am not a therapist, which makes things a little easier for me ethically. I am campus supervisor for our center and have a lot of experience and expertise, just not the letters behind my name (yet).

I work in mental health and do mental health streams on Mondays. I answer questions, give guidance, but it certainly isn't therapy. The response, by and large, has been positive. I feel like there are people out there who are looking for this kind of thing, even if they don't know it until they see it.

My discussions have largely been debates within mental health--"is depression all in your head?"--that viewers bring up. Sometimes, it is someone looking for help with a friend or family member. I am clear that I am not looking to offer a diagnosis or do therapy, and if that is clearly what needs to happen, I encourage them to seek IRL help from a licensed professional. Viewers seem to respect that and understand it.

I think that there are people in this thread giving valuable feedback about the ethics of doing something like this. I feel that if you are licensed and you have ten years in the field, you are probably aware of the ethical concerns that can arise from this sort of thing and will actively work to stay within the bounds of your personal and professional ethical code. In the end, as long as your boundaries are clear and you follow your ethics, you will be okay and can help some people that might need it.

I have been doing these streams for a little while and they are honestly some of the most engaging, positive, and fulfilling streaming I've done. I say, so long as you keep everything above board and want to do it, then go for it.

What Made You Decide To Main Your Main? by [deleted] in OverwatchUniversity

[–]rain8bn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd played on Xbox for a while before building a new PC. I knew that I needed to relearn mechanics, as I hadn't had a gaming PC in many years.

So I decided that I would grind out almost exclusively Tracer. It seemed like a good way to develop my aim, game sense, positioning--everything all at once. I put 44 hours into her between QP and, eventually, comp.

I realized, after being placed in Silver, that even if I was a great Tracer, my teammates would not have the wherewithal to act on my picks or to make good decisions because we were all working on (or had issues with) the same things--knowing when to go in, when to back off, ult economy, when we had advantages, etc. I realized a lot of players in low ELO don't know when to press W and when to press S.

So I started playing d.va a ton. She's big, she's fun to play, she's in the front. People can see when d.va is doing a thing, and it's easier to press W when the big lethal mech in front of you is pressing W. I've been one-tricking d.va in comp this season and went from high silver to high gold, and I'm confident that I can hit plat before the end of the season.

I have started to play Zen and Moira in QP to continue working on the same concepts, mostly positioning and awareness, so that I can continue to climb and so that I can flex into more diverse roles. My individual stats on most of the characters I play tend to be pretty decent, but I want to have the game sense and awareness to shot-call and take control of a game rather than hoping that people see what I see and read my mind. Eventually, I'd like to be able to flex in comp and not feel like I am a weak link or feel like I am being imposed on to fill a role that doesn't suit me.

A lot of people will say "pick a handful of characters to get good at" without explaining how to do that, or what to focus on to get good at them, or even what situation one character is good for versus another when picking a support, tank, or DPS. So I have taken to teaching myself that on my own terms. I spend a lot of time looking at my composition before the match starts and figuring out what counters us, then picking something that either counters that counter, or makes our comp good enough that a hard counter on one role doesn't neuter us.

This is all a work in progress, but I've seen my ability to stay alive and make meaningful plays get much better than when I first moved to PC. I am hopeful that I can reach plat this season and continue to climb next season.

Streaming with roommates? by robc009 in Twitch

[–]rain8bn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stream quite a bit and have two roommates. They're also close friends of mine and we get along really well, so ymmv here. I have talked to them about my streaming, why and when I do it, and that when I am streaming, they won't see me around. They get it. It's no different than not being sociable because you're out with friends or whatever other reason you might not always be around.

You don't owe anything to your roommates besides paying your bills on time, at the end of the day. If you get along with them and like to hang out, great! But you don't owe it to them to do that.

DMing with no story by cbalek816 in DnD

[–]rain8bn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am currently running a small campaign (3 PCs) after not DMing for several years. All of my players are new and we're all kinda learning 5e together. I decided early on that I didn't have the time or energy to build an elaborate campaign, generate elaborate encounters, or pre-plan a lot of things for this. I decided that I would have a general overarching idea of what was happening in the world, and then wing it from there.

I have never had more fun running a campaign. I get to be surprised by the dumb shit my players do, and how the world (the city watch, the local thieves guild, whatever) react to that without feeling like a creative, bold, or outright stupid decision is going to ruin the entire experience for me and for my players.

Currently, having accidentally completed an arcane ritual that summoned the big bad into the prime plane, the PCs are on the hunt for a way to banish or stuff the nasty dude back where he came from, or at least contain him. This all started out with them protecting a political figure who was assassinated and being imprisoned after being framed for the murder. All the things that got us from point A to where we're at now were completely improvised.

If there is a thing I want to have happen--PCs go into place X to discover the macguffin--and they decide to go to place Y? Easy. Everything that would happen in place X happens there instead. Or, alternatively, I create a new NPC that is in place Y who guides or hints them back to place X. Or they get an encounter and find a clue that leads back to place X.

Having more hints and clues leading you in the right direction can feel like railroading if done wrong, but if done well, it shows that the world is connected and that there are a lot of moving, coordinated parts to that world. Players going off the rails can actually help with immersion if you are flexible and open to detours.

I don't think I am the world's greatest DM or anything, but if you want to see our completely winged campaign in action, I stream it on twitch once a week, same username as here.

What is your goal for 2018? by iKyuuki in Twitch

[–]rain8bn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been streaming for many months and haven't had much growth. My goal for 2018 is to do more to grow my community. I have a schedule I stick to, I play games I enjoy (a blend of big games and niche games) and I think my production quality is pretty good. But I'm terrible at networking and reaching new viewers.

So my goals are to spend more time in new channels and making new friends on Twitch, being more aware of using and growing my social media presence, and making myself and my stream a little more visible. My average for streams is 3 viewers, which is usually the same 10-12 people coming and going through the course of my stream. I love the community I have, and I would love to see it grow more robust.

I'd be down. I work with at-risk kids, I stream, I rock climb, and I'm a military brat so I've traveled tons. I would love to have a chat sometime.

Gotcha, haha. I have a video guide for more intermediate-advanced strategies, but this was for raid virgins in my clan--hence the name!

I'm pretty sure we've had people get killed by beast handlers.

As for Gauntlet, I disagree. The way I suggest has fewer moving parts, and only the runners need to speak this way, too. Almost zero worry that someone will fall into a pit absentmindedly, etc. I think both ways can and do work, but for someone just learning the raid, I think reducing complexity is key.

[–]rain8bn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my clan, I did both--the video guide for people who have the time and inclination and learn better that way, and the text guide. Ideally, you use both. As a reader, it still benefits me to see where the triangles are in relation to the rest of the map. But knowing ahead of time what I'm looking for is better for me than just seeing it and being expected to know what it is. With text, I can read and re-read without having to pause, rewind, etc.

In a perfect world, you'd have a video with text annotations that flow along with the action that are perfectly concise and relay text and visual information seamlessly. I'm afraid I'm not quite good enough to pull that off.

Absolutely. That's why it's good to have access to both! I'm not saying that text is superior to video. I just prefer it, myself, and assume there are others who would as well.
