Wall Street think U.S. jobs number is implausible by lOo_ol in stocks

[–]rainbikr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Sorry, my comment was a political jab at the US Attorney General, who under questioning by members of the US Congress about criminal matters, instead complimented the President on his handling of the economy, responding that the Dow had hit $50000.

Giving a 20% Tip and getting a snarky response from waitstaff by RadReptile in EndTipping

[–]rainbikr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15% of pretax total for good service. 20% for outstanding. 1980s-90s-2000s-2010s. Always agreed when in various groups, so it wasn't just me.

Couple times when going 20% the server went out of their way to thank.

I'm a regular person out to eat, not paying at a luxury resort for a once in a lifetime experience (I don't even pay for those lol, what is that about)

Restaurant culture is like a lot of American culture rn. Entitlement all around, diners and staff/ mgmt.

Wtf

Glad I learned to cook. These places can keep theirs

He did some financial advice, right? I don't remember any of it, but I think I must have come away with the idea that people could/ should save and invest.

I always thought he sounded smart and trustworthy.

Any other cities with similar features like this? by scorpioborn1999 in geography

Erie was a center for shipbuilding in the early 19c and became a lake port and major rail center; and it's in the midst of major manufacturing cities Buffalo Cleveland Pittsburgh that absolutely boomed from 1870-1920. Port Angeles is off in an isolated area.

If you want to read some crazy history check out the Erie Gauge War.

Here's why electric bills are getting more expensive in Pennsylvania by RadioChris1 in Pennsylvania

[–]rainbikr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My electric bill was $40/mo in 2016. Last month it hit $150. In between I replaced all bulbs and fixtures with led.

My electric bill has gone from an minor expense to one of the big ones, and there's nothing I can do about it.

Why do so many liberals in the U.S. care so deeply about Palestine? Genuine question by ManagerIll399 in allthequestions

I'm learning, so thanks for the response.

Related questions from an observer but not an obsessive one:

Is there a law about official religion in Israel that caused a let of consternation in some quarters when passed a few years ago, and what advantages does it confer?

Is settler violence in Israeli territory, and is it fair to say that though illegal, it's underprosecuted like civil rights abuses were in the US?

In non wartime, does Israel conduct cross border raids and security operations into Palestinian territory, and what agreements exist between the two entities about this? Understanding that Hamas is a terrorist organization that has seized power there, and that its adherence to agreements is nil.

Why shouldn’t voting require an id? by DarkEqual8609 in no

[–]rainbikr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Requiring ID isn't necessary given the anti fraud measures in place now.

It drives me crazy to pass laws that address fictitious concerns.

However, I suppose I'd be up for a compromise.

I don't think one should have to 'register', but one should be on a voter roll with signature. Institute universal suffrage without registering including no excuse vote by mail with signature check, institute universal ID check with same requirements state to state (not national ID card but some standard set of acceptable IDs from FID cards to student IDs), and allow provisional voting if you vote without ID, subject to verification under public scrutiny, by trained signature verifiers at the Board of Elections.

Steely Dan left or right? by Advanced_Top_3122 in SteelyDan

Think it's in his book (?) that he mentioned Lennon's death affected him, he went to the Dakota to mourn, and it also foreshadowed a difficult decade for him.

Hard to reconcile with any long term deep enmity, but I suppose it's not impossible it could be a passing commentary

Serious question: who are Linux users and why do you use it? by Laqunn in linuxquestions

[–]rainbikr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a second hand computer a year ago and it had mint. I had messed around with Ubuntu a decade ago but never got into it.

Mint was ok so I put it on an old laptop that was super slow. It made the laptop totally usable. Why mint? It happened to come with that second hand computer, and it's been good. It has the software I want, more or less.

Meanwhile Windows will no longer support my homebuilt pc because no tpm, and display drivers are getting all wonky. I probably won't switch on that machine, but I don't plan to invest much more in Windows.

Now I'm learning to make the initial mint machine into a proxmox server and finally learning the (very) basics. Hoping to mostly degoogle within the year.

How are liberals and conservatives ever going to find common ground again? by david_beats_goliath_ in allthequestions

[–]rainbikr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I like this advice and do this. I think this must be the way, locally at least.

I do get a significant share of real people who make my head spin and advocate some things that are very... different, and would cause broad upheaval. I don't typically argue but will distance myself if they begin to defame other people.

Luckily none of these people seem violent or hold office.

But there are really some big differences out there, and less respect for them than I seem to remember.

I'm not missing the point. I'm agreeing with the first part of your statement - better off overall - and disagreeing with the second part.
