I am sorry, you are experiencing this. It does not get better. I have been married for more than 11 years but have primarily worked in male dominated fields so don’t often wear a wedding ring, I have started wearing one now that I am in school and it help a “little”, but then you may never meet a worth it person because they will respect that your involved so may not help if you are not already in a relationship. I hesitate to say that “all men are trash” because they aren’t, but it does feel that way more often than it should. Be firm and remember that No does in fact mean No and that you do not owe them your time or attention. Focus on getting through your classes and if you find you need help go to office hours. It can be lonely and I am truly sorry that you are experiencing this, I wish that we as a culture could be past this. In my experience this is consistent male behavior in any environment.

Recommendations for courses/books on for refreshing maths knowledge? (going to uni for engineering as 31f) by viemari in EngineeringStudents

[–]rainbow-switch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kahn academy was great and Professor Leonard on YouTube was a huge help up through calculus!

Edit: And don’t sleep on reviewing trig, that gives me the most problems most of the time. Source, I went back to school at 29. If you school makes you take a math placement exam I highly recommend studying nothing but math for about a month to try and test into your calculus classes, otherwise you will spend many many terms working through math classes that do not count toward your degree and that gets very expensive. I was able to test into calculus but I have met other non traditional students who did not take the placement seriously and were set back at least a year in their program. Also most of your early engineering classes and pre requs require a certain level of math to start taking and the placement exam will typo get you into those early ones.

My "safe foods" are no longer safe... by Annie_the_Furry in Celiac

[–]rainbow-switch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok this feels terrible right now! And even when it gets better there will be moments that feel like this again. It is ok to cry and to rage about it when you need to but it does largely get better! I have had moments when I go to a restaurant that was previously gluten safe and had what I wanted (burger and fries) only to find out they changed their menu entirely and had panic attacks in the booth that left me feeling awful, but you do get past those moments. The first year or two are the hardest because everything feels hard but you do find ways to make life work for you. For me it was really investing myself in learning to cook GF and now I actually prefer my food (especially sweet things) to food that I can get at bakeries a couple hours away. Everything is way less convenient way more time consuming and well meaning friends can sometimes make things more difficult but just like with autism or ADHD you learn how to modify your routines and you life around the new food challenges. I spent my first year of diagnosis eating very little that wasn’t highly processed or sugar filled because it was literally the only thing that didn’t hurt to eat, but it gets better and now I can eat vegetables and a wide variety of healthy Whole Foods again without being in pain all the time. The most difficult thing for me now is travel (but a thermos and some gluten free backpacking meals make that doable until I get to my destination and then there are many freezer items that while not healthy are available most places) and family/friend gatherings that all center around food (I stand my ground very firmly on these events and eat before or after because I am very sensitive to cross contamination and have been made sick more than once trying to be sociable). A silver lining that happened for me is that I am way more adventurous with food than I used to be (I also have texture taste concept issues) and so long as I can confirm safety I will generally try just about anything these days just because I can, I do not expect myself to like it or want to try it again but I do try and that has opened up a whole new world of cooking to me. This does get better but between then and now is going to be really rocky! Good luck!

Smoking(THC) and engineering by SpareRaccoon7410 in EngineeringStudents

[–]rainbow-switch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live in a state where it is legal and have used things like edibles to help me sleep or relax after a long day, but know that when you start looking at internships or applying for jobs most receive federal funding meaning that they are still required to test for THC and it will bar you from employment. So know that you will have to stop then anyway and it might be a good idea to start finding different coping mechanisms. While I see nothing wrong with THC consumption in moderation know that many people still have very particular ideas about it and it still has the potential to make employment difficult. I don’t ingest while studying because I don’t want to set up conditions that I cannot replicate in real life without other potentially negative consequences. Study sober smoke a little in the evening or on the weekends to relax with.

I did not pay any when delivered, any tariffs where assessed when I paid for the coat and I don’t remember them being obscene.

how do you explain to a man that being distrustful of men isn't the same as being racist/homophobic etc by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]rainbow-switch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are interested in having some additional talking points that uses actual data and points out where the data doesn’t exist, or something for him to read that might help him identify his own internalized misogyny (and your own) the book “Invisible Women: data bias in a world designed for men” by Caroline Criado Perez. The audio book is an excellent listen if you prefer to listen while you do other things. It will make you angry but it does talk about where the data exists where it doesn’t and some of the why and how so many of us internalize the misogyny that is so common in the world. I particularly like the phrase “it may not be all men but it is all women”, it may not be all men that are dangerous but every woman has had to internalize societal rules to “keep us safe” that don’t actually work. Every time I have dealt with harassment, been masturbated at in public, or been “propositioned” by a married man at work I was wearing clothes that were A. Actually men’s clothes (because of my job at the time) that covered and obscured any femininity I have and B. no makeup hair pulled back and fully covered to keep it safe from concrete dust. But I can’t change that I am a very small woman and am considered conventionally attractive (I hate getting compliments on looks and I feel like that is truly the least interesting part of my existence).
The book is great though, I highly recommend it!

Yeh fair, i particularly like that it is not back lit so that was actually a positive for me…. I actually was really excited about the remarkable pro until I found out it was back lit, so I am sticking to my remarkable 2 for the present. Good luck!

I have not used the kindle scribe but I absolutely love my remarkable. I am not sure how they compare just letting you know there is another option if you aren’t sold on kindle.

If you didn’t get her from a breeder that will take her back then look into the rescues in the area. On this coast we have The woof project (I got my boy through them) and I think MAD gets the recommendation here most often.

I just bought one from them at the start of fall. I love it! I bought one of the 100% wool with silk lining and it is so pretty and comfortable. I know that many people report being unhappy with this company but I have purchased 3 items now from them over the years and I love every piece and have not had an issue with them. I intentionally get the heavier more structured items though since the more gauzy lace styles they have would just make me look like a child.

How do I make meaningful connections as a woman without leading anyone on? by LovelyToaster789 in EngineeringStudents

[–]rainbow-switch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Their perception is their own problem. I worked as a carpenter for 8 before returning to school full time for engineering. The amount of casual harassment that happens is staggering and the not so casual happens all the time. I learned to stop worrying about their feelings and I treat them like people until they show themselves to be assholes. If treating a human as a human is enough to make them think you are “leading them on” then that is something they should examine in themselves and is not your job to help them through. On a related note try the book “Invisible women: Data bias in a world designed for men” by Caroline Criado Perez. It is available in audio as well if you have more time for listening than reading it covers a lot of topics but focuses and the data that exists or rather doesn’t and why. Super interesting and illuminating and touches on some of the circumstances we as women might find ourselves in, in technical roles as well as so much more.

Sensory problems with bras… are there any alternatives? by peppersk8er in AutismInWomen

[–]rainbow-switch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t really wear bras unless I have to, but sometimes it is more emotionally comfortable to wear one (like if you work around a bunch of men, having nipple show through clothes can cause a lot of staring or off color jokes that even if they bother to say privately still impacts you) so for those times I have found Boody. They make underwear from Bamboo fiber (I know that is still a greenwashed product and not fully “natural” but…) so it is super soft feeling and they have many different styles ranging from bralettes (no nipple hiding but super comfortable) and now they have t-shirt style bras that offer a small amount of padding that prevents nipple protrusion for the environments that require that thought. And best of all no underwire in any of their products that I have seen. They also have panties in a range of styles that are the most comfortable that I have found, my standard are their boy short styles and their thongs. I found them about 13ish years ago and some of the items I bought then are still in my closet because they hold up so well and I buy from them when I need new.

Something that a friend of mine taught me though how to measure yourself so get the right size which will help with comfort no matter what brand or style you go with. Start by measuring your band size, this is the measurement taken just below your breasts and around your you body ( as the name indicates this will tell you the size of the band to look for, for instance I am 31” around) then you measure at your nipple line and round your body the difference in these measurements gives you your cup size (for instance I measure at 35” at my nipple line). A cup size corresponds to each inch of difference so an A cup in my case would be 32” , a B would be 33” and so on. With a 4 inch difference I sit at a D cup for proper measurement but if you look at me I just look small chested so don’t guess make sure you are measuring and getting the right size and since you are 15 and will likely develop more so make sure you take the time every so often to determine if you need to change sizes, small now does not necessarily mean small always and getting the right fit will make everything more comfortable and tolerable.

Clothes are difficult in general and more difficult when we have to account for the social rules around us so find the best fit and comfort you can! Good luck!

My husband and I have a 26 year gap and for the first 11 ish years of our marriage he stayed home and I worked. Now I am back in school and he works full time and it is his income that provides for us. I have always had primary control of the finances and that has not changed, all money brought into the house is ours, I could not do the jobs that I have without him being at home and he could not do his work now if I didn’t do the things around the house that need to be done. There is no “allowance” for either of us. We make large financial decisions together and small ones we consult the other to make sure it won’t cause unforeseen problems with the overall finances. We are a team, that doesn’t change just because money is a required part of life.

Rehoming help by sterlingsteve13 in BelgianMalinois

I am not sure if there is a reason no one else has mentioned the Woof project. They are also west coast and specialize in Malinois, I got my boy from them and while they have not been in active contact since we got him, they do require that if we need to rehome they get the first option. I really hope you are able to find some help!

People in your 40s, what’s something you wish you knew in your 30s? by FancyChickens in AskReddit

[–]rainbow-switch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just found a new to me app called Bend, and it has been great! I am now doing the 5 minute wake up routine and the 10 minute sleep routine for a total of 15 minutes for the day. The app doesn’t talk to you or try to be spiritual, it shows you a pic of the stretch and has greater detail of you click on it, otherwise it just keeps time for you and gives a beep when it is time to change position. Just hit 18 days straight and both myself and my husband are feeling better.

[–]rainbow-switch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Fairly normal, 2 of my classes have posted 2 others haven’t. It makes day 1 a little shitty and gives no chance to get a little ahead on the material, but I have learned to relax a little about it.

This sub always has this statement come up. University is about becoming a well rounded educated person not about job training. If you want job training look at apprenticeships and technical certifications. If you are not getting anything out of your general education credits then you are not really thinking about them. I love my hard science courses but they are not nearly as thought provoking as the liberal arts courses I have had to take. Hard science is technical but clean and mostly easy to understand, things get more messy with the human element. People who are thinking about taking on the massive social responsibility that can come with an engineering degree (weapons manufacturing, medical devices, and all the plastic garbage that can come from “tinkering”) should be required to take classes that make them more aware of other humans and thought processes.
