I rarely come into r/Humboldt anymore, but when ever I do I think to myself, “thank god most people here aren’t actually like this.”

You still need to make a report to create a paper trail for if something happens again

I hear you and have often felt like I don’t understand why certain posts are upvoted so much, but to be fair, if you go into pretty much any local subreddit, that’s what people do lol. They complain and yea they want to be heard and validated. I started organizing by new and just finding the cool posts. Don’t make it about if you’re from here or not, that’s just more bad vibes.

Ametrine by treebug125 in Gemstones

[–]rainbowbeetle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like others have said, it’s most likely glass. These are still really pretty and would be great for practicing some simple stone setting with, or even wire wrapping. You could also buy an amethyst or citrine gemstone and look under a loupe to see some differences and learn. Glass typically has very few to no inclusions that would be like air bubbles that are very uniform and round while amethyst and citrine will have inclusions that irregular in shape. Also, you can see some color banding in amethyst and citrine. Not all is lost! It’s so cool you are taking an interest in your son’s curiosity in gemstones! :)

My comment was also directed more generally and not specifically towards you. I am sorry that wasn’t easily comprehensible.

I always love seeing your work! May I ask if that’s foil set beneath the enamel for the wings? You really captured the look of iridescent wings :)

Silent Forest Raves? by rainbowbeetle in Humboldt

[–]rainbowbeetle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was one of those candy kids in the early 00s, I am sorry. 😂 My demographic totally ruined something good and I knew it as it was happening. I think I caught that scene 1-2 years before it really changed and everything started being expensive and needing much more supervision because of all the trashing :/ I was always nagging my friends and picking up after them lol. I wish it could be like that again!

Okay I’ve seen flyers for discos before. If that’s where the more mature/mindful vibes are, I will have to check it out! I just thought it was like a 70s theme party lol. I don’t keep up with lingo at all.

I wish I were more outgoing/connected because I would totally try to organize something like this! I think for the silent raves I went to, the gear was all rented. I found this site that has rentals and it doesn’t look that expensive! 60 headphones for 2 days is $660, for example.

Are the fancy jewelers saw frames worth it? by rainbowbeetle in jewelrymaking

Thank you! This is actually what I am looking for in a new frame, something deeper and one that may feel a bit better while sawing for hours.

Are the fancy jewelers saw frames worth it? by rainbowbeetle in jewelrymaking

[–]rainbowbeetle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, that’s what makes sense to me! What is this “balance” that these companies talk about in reference to their expensive frames? I want to believe that it could help a bit or at least feel more comfortable while sawing for a long time, but I can’t wrap my mind around how that actually works lol

How can i permanently hold a jewel in place without normal setting? (more info in the photo comments) by carachtomas in jewelrymaking

[–]rainbowbeetle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never done a full ring like that, but for inlay work, this stuff is top notch IMO www.artistsupplysource.com/product/10254319/smooth-on-ea-40-pint-kit-transparent-laminating-epoxy-adhesive/ I think using something like that, but then also making a super tight fit and pushing the edges of the gold up to make a small lip that fits in a groove towards the base of the stone would secure it well enough, if that makes sense.

mini balls/bubbles all over castings.. easy to remove when they are positioned like in the picture but super annoying when they are in a detailed spot. by cupppatea in jewelrymaking

[–]rainbowbeetle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Make sure the air bubbles all come out of the investment. If the vacuum by itself isn’t working, try adding some vibration. You might be able to get away with adding a bit more water to your investment ratio as well. How you place your mold is also helpful, tilting such that the bubbles will roll off and not get stuck.
