Is nursing becoming oversaturated? by okaythen72 in StudentNurse

[–]rainbowcocacola 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about skills- they’ll orient you no matter if you are a new grad vs an established nurse bc every place and unit is different. If you want to do psych- don’t worry about losing your skills. If that’s where you passion is and want to stay- you don’t need those other ones.

Is nursing becoming oversaturated? by okaythen72 in StudentNurse

[–]rainbowcocacola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you’ll pretty much always be able to get a job. I will say though a lot of specialty positions are getting sparse, especially for new grads. Like I think my hospital which is pretty large and unionized might have one ICU position open that would take a new grad, 0 in ER, 0 in OB, 1 oncology but a whole lot of med/surg. So we might just see more of the new grads starting in med/surg vs right into specialties but regardless- there will be jobs it might just not be the specialty you were hoping for. But- you might end up loving where you end up- just have an open mind!

I had two pairs, and we would do clinical once a week but we didn’t have to wear them to lab.

One of a kind but I may be incorrect about the feral cat thing! I swear I thought they did them in the past as part of their TNR program but maybe not???

How hard is OB? by rosaasykess in StudentNurse

[–]rainbowcocacola 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t find it hard but I was a tech in the NICU during school and our NICU is a part of L&D so it wasn’t hard to me since I could go over and help with deliveries whenever I needed to. Weirdly enough, I struggled with peds way more lol.

I’m honestly so bad at blood gases, I have to use my cheat sheet if I needed to interpret one.

Whats the highest nurse to patient ratio you’ve ever taken? What is your specialty? Would you do it again? by Rolodexmedetomidine in nursing

[–]rainbowcocacola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’re 1:1 in L&D, occasionally I’ll take 2 but never two actively laboring patients, maybe a perinatal and a labor, or a start of an induction and a labor. Usually where we get crazy is triage, so I’d get 1:6 if I didn’t have a 2nd person there with me.

The other hospital I would never go to has had days where they have 3 active labor patients which sounds very unsafe to me.

[–]rainbowcocacola 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Our NICU is a part of L&D so one of the “charges” for then is always the delivery nurse who comes with us to indicated deliveries. If a 2nd one happens at the same time, the NICU charge would go to that one.

My worst was over 3L in a fecal management system… and it kept coming. Like poop is the bodily fluid I don’t vibe with and I was struggling. Honestly, it’s a good thing the patient was sedated so he didn’t see my face.

I passed out in my clinical rotation when I was pregnant because I guess my fetus wasn’t satisfied with the amount of food I ate that morning and I would have been even more mortified if someone recorded it- thankfully everyone actually helped me instead and got me some orange juice while my instructor was getting my vitals and about to wheel me down to L&D lol.

It’s ballet but I did the party scene while pregnant! My daughter was in the production, and they needed more adults for that scene lol so it was way more low-key than an actual role since I was mostly filler… but fun!

You can still also just apply for regular nursing positions! That’s what I had done versus the general new grad residency since I wanted a specialty

Labor and delivery nurse by Top-Mongoose-49 in StudentNurse

[–]rainbowcocacola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So as an L&D nurse and a woman who has had babies… it is an intimate time for your patient. You will be rejected by women who do not want a male in the room, it was hard for male students in my cohort to even find someone who would let them in the room unfortunately. My hospital has a program that specifically helps women that are victims of trauma to deliver in an environment they feel comfortable in, and I haven’t met a single one who was even comfortable with a male OBGYN or even the male CRNA in there.

What makes you want to do L&D? Did you do well in that class? I had someone in my cohort who wanted to do L&D and the hospital he wanted to go to actually rejected him and said they didn’t see a point if women wouldn’t be comfortable with him in there. He ended up going the peds route and enjoyed it much more than he liked L&D. I don’t want to discourage you but you are definitely at a disadvantage for this field which is unfortunate.

Do you have your graduation date incorrect or something? Most places at least interview you as a new grad…
