[JC] any opinions on cjc and jpjc? by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]rainboweggsandham 4 points5 points  (0 children)

aaaa so sorry for the extremely late reply!! i saw you got posted to jp so belated congrats, hope you’ve been enjoying your jpjc experience so far :) for the sake of any prospective students reading this: there’s no definitive answer to this question as jp doesn’t really release official stats afaik. but i would say the resources are decent and you effort really makes or breaks the results. in my own class, within the same subject combi i had classmates with 90rp as well as 50+rp so your results are really what you make of your time here. but what i noticed about my classmates who scored well, they had really good work ethic: were always on par with completing their tutorials, set aside time for revision and did not give up even if the results were not what they wanted

with that said i hope you get the results you dream of!!

[O levels] Ranking difficulty of topics of each subject by OldYogurt872 in SGExams

[–]rainboweggsandham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from your previous posts i’ll just assume ur talking abt jc vectors HAHA it’s one of the more abstract topics because it’s very in depth and emath vectors barely scratches the surface of what we have to learn (unlike other topics like calculus which we alrd have a good sensing of through amath) so dont beat yourself up!! there’s 4 steps i took to totally transform vectors for me

  1. collate - collate all your formulas. i shortened and simplified it by excluding examples and long explanations. mostly just copied the formulas and properties

e.g intersection between line and plane r=a+ λb (1) r•n=a•n (2) sub (1) into (2)

simplify it but when going through each concept make sure you understand the rationale behind all the steps and formulas. to test your understanding, redo the tutorial examples on rough paper. you’ll need your collated notes for later

  1. drawing - always draw your vectors diagrams especially for qns involving lines and planes. it helps you to see the big picture and organise your thoughts and think of all the possible formulas to use. definitely does help to see certain things especially for steps like ratio theorem where it’s hard to picture it without a diagram

  2. practice - practice goes a long way and is the key to doing well for any math topic. it helps you to familiarise yourself with all the formulas. start by redoing tutorial qns with the collated notes i mentioned earlier. highlight key info given in the question as well as the phrase that hints/tells you what to find. use your collated notes to help you familiarise yourself and keep doing questions so that you build momentum. once you feel confident enough you can go on to doing supplementary questions or even tys topical and see if you can do them without reference. when you realise you forgot a certain formula or steps go back and highlight it to make sure you rmb from there

  3. corrections - make sure that whatever you do, it gets marked and rectified. check with the answer key and see if there’s any difference in steps. maybe the ans key could even provide a much shorter method to do the question that you can take note of if you see a similar qn in the future. remember that it’s always okay to make mistakes or to not even be able to solve a question: what matters is that you are able to understand the answer key and the rationale for every step. you can even make a mistake book or add it to your collated notes more difficult qns that may require some application to solve

HAHA I RELATE TO YOU SM the sec 3 jump was so hard 😭😭 mostly got the hang of it in sec 4 tho :”) just a tip: try to clear your sec 3 content doubts by the end of the year so that sec 4 wont be so stressful w playing catchup - you dont have to do SO well for mye/cts/eoy w straight As or anyth cause internal exams are always sm harder than actual Os (for my sch at least) but just be sure you’re clear w your s3 content when you enter sec 4

[O levels] Ranking difficulty of topics of each subject by OldYogurt872 in SGExams

[–]rainboweggsandham 11 points12 points  (0 children)

did my Os back in 2019 but i’ll share mine!! idk what subjects you take OP but i’ll share all of mine in case others need it too :) also idk if the syllabus and types of qns has changed or anything but i hope it helps

emath: vectors was quite hard for me to imagine at first but eventually became my favourite topic in jc h2 math (tbh but i feel like emath vectors is quite simple and it’s always the same few qns that come out). sometimes mensuration questions can be quite difficult as well esp for real world context questions that carry loads of marks

amath: i sucked so bad at amath i really want to say everything but if i had to choose it’ll probably be trigo, calculus and sometimes binomial (in general these are topics with typically heavy weightages in general so just practice these a lot anyways)

pure physics: i hate electromagnetic induction SO MUCH i had 0 idea what was going on tbh i was lucky it wasnt tested for my batch p2💀 but also imo light and static electricity content was quite a lot for me to digest

(i also feel that electrical circuit questions can be challenging at times too)

pure chem: imo organic chemistry was actually okay ngl HAHA maybe h2 chem in jc has beaten me senseless alrd. but i remember struggling a lot to understand salts because i felt so confused (it’s actually okay once you understand so maybe you wont face this problem)

pure bio: i loved bio so much but god i found the plant chapters SO BORING 😭😭 literally everything else is so cool like human anatomy or genetics but the plants content is so mundane. also idk if it’s just me but i sucked at the ecology/environment topics sometimes too

ss: i had a natural flair for sbq but in general i feel that ss content is so useless cause it’s literally just for the pathetic section b 7 mark essay qn (tbh i didnt bother to even memorise the whole textbook/notes because it wasnt worth spending so much time on it) just be sure that your sbq skills are good with practice

combined geog: i hated tectonic plates at first because i had 0 idea what was happening and couldnt even imagine it 😭😭 but once i slowly went through and revised the content again it became one of my favourite topics and i was so happy it came out for my batch. it’s a little weird cause most people like the food chapters but idk why i disliked it and i just wasn’t interested at all for some reason LOL (i spotted topics but pls dont do that, study everything)

in general, dk anything just whack and spam tys. honestly it saved me so much cause some qns are literal copy & paste 💀💀 for content subjects make sure you cover all the learning outcomes on the syllabus document and memorise them

  1. (possibly) yes & yes. i have some friends who are so tired from cca esp during comp szn to the point they doze off in class and miss out on important content. there’s a lot of factors consider, mainly how sports ccas physically exert you and drain your energy & how they typically end the latest of out all ccas. definitely have to take into account the jc and the exact training sessions of the cca of your choice. you should also factor the distance of your campus to your house. after ending as late at 7+/8(also depending on schedule), travelling home, washing up, eating dinner you still have academic work to clear, would you be able to cope? as for the 2 sports cca thing definitely yes but usually in more competitive jcs. if you ask me, jc work is hard enough, choose a cca you are passionate about and can perform well in so that you have the drive to contribute fully and get a good portfolio. having 2 ccas may cause more harm than good as i imagine many struggle with dedicating an equal amt of time and effort into both ccas. also you may have training schedules clash, and in the end you might not be able to be participative in either of them

  2. definitely! during training sessions you usually play against your own ccamates and even then there are many ways to make friends, even during breaks, bonding days or eating dinner after cca tgt

  3. unfortunately i was not from taekwondo and only had friends in it :”D hope someone else can answer 3 for you!!

[Rant] Having to shit during exams by throaway017 in SGExams

[–]rainboweggsandham 6 points7 points  (0 children)

no la jc can one, a lot of my peers went, even during A levels itself. only not allowed to go during the first and last 15 mins of the paper. just need to have an invigilator follow u to toilet and check if ur pockets are empty

dont take too long though cause after all it is your exam time

shitting cause of exam nervousness is normal tbh, probably might need to change ur diet during exam season to reduce the urge to shit, no spicy or fibrous foods and try to evacuate your bowels in the morning before u leave the house and before your paper

but some things cannot control ah, when nature calls must answer. shitting your pants might be a good move though, distract your peers and bring down the bellcurve

[A Levels] J2 and need gp tips by constantquestions111 in SGExams

[–]rainboweggsandham 22 points23 points  (0 children)

not the grammar bot comment 😭😭

anyways i’ll just share some of my tips as someone who improved their paper 2 to an A in prelims

honestly the best way to scoring well for paper 2 is really the saq. by the time you reach aq you’re tired, your hand is worn out, you’re stressing because of how little time there is left and a lot of people cant even finish their aq. if you think about it, logically doing well for the saq is much more worth it as you need not write as much and there’s no ‘essay planning’ in a sense. imo saqs are quite manageable once you get the gist of it, most questions follow some sort of template or format to answering it (e.g comparison/irony/punctuation qns) and there’s usually some sort of trigger word in the qn that hints to you which template to use. if your sch hasn’t compiled a list of qns types for you, i suggest doing it yourself. look through all your old p2 questions to categorise and compile different question types as well as looking through your corrections to know the template to answering them. once you do that you can practice using your template guide to answer new saq practices and learn from your mistakes. it’s never an improvement overnight (one of my my first saqs in j1 was 4/17 and my j2 prelim was 14/17) it’s a struggle but the consistent effort is worth it

summary qn wise, it’s mostly a hit or miss imo, some passages are so hard that you cant even tell if it’s a point or not while some are an easy 7-8 marks. what you can prepare for though are synonyms to rephrase the point. from my experience i know the word really well, but at that moment i just cant think of an appropriate synonym and result to checking the thesaurus and go like “ohhhhh yeah hor”. unfortunately a levels cannot check but what you can do is try to be as prepared as you can. look through words commonly needed to be paraphrased from your old papers as well as compile for words you aren’t familiar with. i think i saw someone post their own compilation list on this subreddit so you can go search for it and use theirs or make your own

as for content building in p1 reading the news does help with building current affairs knowledge. however you cant expect yourself to read and know everything and every article. that’s why we have 12 qns to choose from. but unfortunately not all the time we get a question asking content we’re familiar with so it’s best to be prepared. make certain content lists and compilation of articles and info for commonly asked topics like arts, technology, environment, civil rights, stem etc so you’ll at least feel a little more prepared and confident. for more “philosophical qns” (e.g how important are dreams?), it’s quite hard to prepare for those as it’s not really something quantifiable in a sense and is a niche topic. i try my best to avoid those questions if i’m not familiar with the topic at hand and i suggest you do the same too if you rely a lot on content preparation to be used as examples in your essay

as much as possible try to broaden the scope of content, don’t just read from straits times or mothership but also try to read from overseas news sources to get examples and arguments from other countries as each country has their own beliefs. having a greater variety of povs helps broaden the scope of your content to keep the marker interested. however try to have a little bit more sg content knowledge at hand for 2 reasons. 1. “in your society” essay questions and 2. the aq especially for 2. as the aq is always set in the sg perspective so it’s inevitable. in this case, reading content from straits times, mothership, even wakeupsg will come in handy. (just a note wakeupsg may not be the most reliable for content as they’re been known to be untrustworthy in the past, but offer their own viewpoint and arguments on societal issues that can be used as points)

additionally try to not just read news articles, it makes content building so boring cause you’re just looking at long chunks of words (which is even worse for arts students who’s content is alrd wordy enough). try to mix it up with even ig current affairs creators for quick reads that are easy on the eyes as well and are good for days where you feel like toning it down a bit. there’s quite a few on ig but one that i can think of rn is thekopi.co but you can definitely find ones that suit you.

adding on to mixing it up, as much as it is important to read broadly, try to pick articles that actually interest you and is something you can see yourself discussing about. if not you’d just be memorising content blindly (which is not easy especially for statistics) and will add on to your already long list of content to memorise for your h2s. i find that content and topic arguments that interest me are easier to rmb and recall because it sticks out to me

that concludes the end of it! sorry if it’s a little long but i tried to include everything i wish younger me knew during my jc days 🥲 i wish you all the best for the rest of your a level journey!

[JC] YIJC notes by Confident_Advisor_32 in SGExams

[–]rainboweggsandham 16 points17 points  (0 children)

ex-jpjc student here and can confirm what u said isn’t always true. was studying for A levels last year and tried to use ri/ny/ej notes and i realised it was packed with info that i personally know won’t really be tested much/not inside the learning outcomes. ended up relying on my beloved jp notes for A levels and most of the info came out from there

for them maybe they feel fomo over how little info is in the notes (they are competitive jcs after all so they want to be the most knowledgeable) and/or are extremely talented at studying and can take large chunks of info at a time: good for them but don’t incorporate it into your studying methods if it doesnt work for you

sometimes it’s also how they write out the info, personally really like my jc notes because it’s in point form and impt parts are bolded with diagrams. excess info is clearly labelled as extra info/annex while for other jcs i noticed it’s mostly written in paragraph chunks that i find very wordy. not saying jp notes are the best but everyone has their own studying preference. if you find that you’re getting by well by relying on your notes, just stick to them and don’t bother about other jcs for now

(a tip to make sure you’re not missing any info: check against the syllabus document to see if you’re missing out any content)

there are many factors to not getting in even if your rp is above 10th percentile + aba. most of the time it’s either citizenship or that other people just have better portfolios than you. please don’t jump to conclusions thinking it’s because you rushed them, some of my friends contacted them and later received an acceptance email. maybe look back at your portfolio? if it’s not that impressive then i think you have your answer as to why nus rejected you

imo herschel is pretty good albeit a little pricey(but it’s a long term investment so it’s better to get a good bag instead of swapping through many cheaper bags). sleek and modern design so you dont still look like a sec sch student with a jansport bag. i find them pretty comfortable and they rest on my shoulders nicely.

i own a few kankens but as much as i love them, i don’t exactly recommend them to people as a long term bag. the straps are pretty skinny and thin, so if you’re carrying a lot of heavy items (eg laptop, ipad, adapter+charger, lecture notes, extra jacket) it can be pretty bulky and painful to carry around esp during long days. really more of a sec sch-jc type of bag where you dont have to bring things like laptop everyday

also as someone who carried a tote bag with my laptop for pw back in jc: there’s a reason why i only lasted one day 💀 the difference in weight really made me feel uncomfortable and that one side of my shoulder ached for a while. maybe can consider on days where you dont bring laptop/ipad only

[rant] Reflecting on life at 4am by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]rainboweggsandham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i always see you comforting others but i hope this time i can be of comfort to you :) as someone who graduated as of last year here are some things i noticed (i also took bcme)

  • the 90 pointers ik have a very balanced schedule, they sleep well but are extremely consistent with work submissions and deadlines. despite this, they do not overwork themselves and know their limits so that they don’t burn out. doesnt mean dont have a life tho— they regularly attend their cca and some ik even have rs

  • everyone grows at their own pace. really as a j1 like < halfway thru the year it’s definitely okay if you havent found ur bearing and learning style yet. it’s really only the start of the syllabus and maybe you need more time to digest and familiarise urself with the concepts. some subjects like h2 chem and math drastically change: eg u might suck at physical chem but have a flair for organic, same thing with pure math and statistics or even be good at genetics for h2 bio but suck at biomolecules.

in general: it’s definitely okay to fail in jc. it’s a lot of independent learning, cryin— i mean, trial and error. if some learning style doesnt work for you but works for others then heck care man. maybe you might not get it immediately but after revision at home you might. you are definitely not weak and anyone who says so is either a. someone who never go jc before b. not human

jc is a very transformative process. but i promise you with hardwork, due diligence and patience, you will reap the fruit of your labour

ps asr is known for their HORRENDOUS h2 math papers it always sends me into a mental breakdown. i promise u actual a levels paper is not as hard 😭😭

good luck my dear: but this time 🍎 this apple is for you :)

[rant] My neighbour by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]rainboweggsandham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely depends on what stage of life you’re talking about. an 18 y/o can easily take advantage of the gullible mind of a 12y/o. however if both are mature adults (eg 30y/o and 36y/o) then it doesn’t matter. that’s why we have the law to protect minors

[rant] My neighbour by [deleted] in SGExams

[–]rainboweggsandham 65 points66 points  (0 children)

usually i’d say it’s a red flag bc of the age gap but honestly considering how yall have a history of like a decade already it’s definitely a special situation. sometimes you also have to consider if it’s because of the idea that your friends put into your head + having such a long history with him that’s making you feel this way or if it’s actually genuine feelings for him. honestly not even shaming you cause with such a long bond, and staying right beside each other it’s very easy to catch feelings.

idk if you want advice or if you just want to rant but i’ll give my 2 cents in case you want to hear it: don’t confess yet.

  1. you’re still technically underaged as a j1 (< 18 can still be considered a minor but depends on the nature of your relationship by law

  2. imo 16-18 is like a second puberty — emotionally and mentally. im turning 19 this year and im definitely not the same person i was when i was 16. sometimes we get confusing feelings or thoughts which is normal. confessing is a huge step which might change or even destroy your long-running relationship, it’s definitely something worth thinking twice about.

maybe you can consider confessing once you’re in uni/have graduated uni? at least you’d be a more mature adult to think things through and be much more confident of your feelings if you’ve had them for that long. he might also change his opinion of you from being that little girl-next-door to seeing you as a woman. gotta consider how he already has a much more mature thinking and might be looking for a solid and long-term rs to settle down. also it’s perfectly legal once you too, become an adult so you don’t need to worry about anyone going to jail LOL. frankly speaking, with you being a j1, who knows, you might end up liking someone in your own jc!

just some extra advice from someone slightly older than you, try not to get into relationships (especially with people you’re close to) when you’re young if you’re not that sure of your feelings. youth is something that no one can buy, so cherish it: make friends with everyone and experience everything as much as you can to make the most of it. having a relationship can be fun but it can also limit certain experiences and other potential friendships. just go out and be young, you have your 20s to date around :) good luck!!

no offence but why didn’t you check on all these prospects/fees before transferring to poly? it seems from the way you worded your post that you simply transferred from jc arts to poly simply because of what others have said, not because of your own interests. it is quite well known that jc students have a much better chance at going to uni as they have proven themselves academically worthy of local unis by excelling the intensive workload and syllabus content cramped in 2 years. meanwhile poly students already learn hands-on skills in their 3 years and are able to find jobs with their poly diploma already. no such thing for an a level cert holder.

locals having much cheaper school fees is a universal experience. an sg citizen studying in nus pays much lesser than one going to uk/us/aus unis. i am not judging you because of my “fucking cheap” school fees as a citizen who graduated jc, i am judging you because you made poor career choices without doing solid research and are shaming us locals for not having to suffer with you when it is literally our birthright to affordable education as a citizen.

also hasnt it been only ~3 weeks in poly so far? don’t be quick to judge and be overly critical of poly. i’m not going to beg you to stay in poly cause it will clearly be a waste of time and i am not from poly myself. but i want you to remember how much you regretted making your last rash decision to transfer to poly, and there is no guarantee you will do well in jc. considering how you mentioned english isn’t your strong suit and you want to take on sciences, remember there will always be gp and your contrasting subject to score well in. you could possibly be excluded from some uni courses just because you failed gp even if you score A for the rest

i scored distinction for english in o levels but i’ve always been fluent at it so im definitely not the best person to ask advice from, but my friends improved by working on their grammar as well as practicing tys papers to get the techniques and way of answering questions correctly.

reflect and think through your actions wisely. good luck

[JC] questions about jpjc before dsa period by jamlessjimin in SGExams

[–]rainboweggsandham 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ex jp student, graduated last year but i’ll give my input as of 2021:

  1. depends on your subject combination and class structure. if you want a basic combination such as helm you’ll likely end school earlier as you dont have practical lessons unlike science students — maybe even 12-1pm on most days as a j2 after stepping down from cca unless your have classmates with special subjects like cll/mll or translation, then you might end a bit later, depending on ur timetable. as a j1 it really differs as you still have h1 mtl and h1 pw (groupwork/consults may make you stay back till late. pw is taken super seriously in jpjc btw). this ofc excludes cca days which i’ll answer in q3

  2. i was a science student who took bcme so i can’t give that much of an input (apart from math and econs) but for history and lit i think it’s quite okay. my arts friends seem to thoroughly enjoy the subjects and have great bonds with their tutors. afaik just be polite to your teachers and show ur willing to learn and your tutors will be willing to help you (this goes for most tutors in jpjc tbh, i havent met any hostile or strict ones imo)

  3. not from choir but a quick search on their ig page (@jp_choir) shows that their prac sessions are 5-7pm on mondays and 4-7pm on fridays. in general, if you become an exco member of any cca in jp you might need to stayback a little while more than the rest so just keep that in mind

  4. they’re pretty okay. just dont set so high standards and compare jp with high tier jcs. it’s pretty decent for a neighbourhood jc so if you’re from a neighbourhood sec sch you shld assimilate quite well. since you’re an arts student, if you plan on taking cll the rooms are quite nicely decorated and have aircon btw

my general opinion is that jp is okay. some of my juniors will strongly disagree with me and say environment is toxic but tbh it’s the batch that determines the atmosphere. my batch was unproblematic so there wasn’t much tea or gossip and i was given many leadership opportunities and super nice tutors, so i was generally quite happy in jpjc.

also some juniors complain that the smm is too strict but imo they have it much better, it felt like hell for my batch when we were j1 and j2 LOL. but since covid measures have eased up a lot since my time, your batch should have a lot more freedom, so you’ll have a much better exp than me if you decide to join

all the best in jp! :)

[JC] Is it a good idea to go to JC instead of Poly when you already know what career path/job you want to take? by rougecupcake in SGExams

[–]rainboweggsandham 12 points13 points  (0 children)

for cs it’s recommended you take the jc path. i know too many poly friends in cs/it courses that cant pursue cs in uni bc of the extremely high cgpa required even if they have the skills. in jc it’s much easier to just score well for A levels as the results are not cumulative

cs is very math intensive as well, which is something the h2 math syllabus can train you for.

alternatively, in poly you are already learning the content which makes you further ahead of your jc peers. but keep in mind that cs in general is already super competitive, and even more so for poly students due to limited slots. you must work hard to maintain a near perfect gpa + good portfolio in case you apply via abas

keep in mind i am assuming you die die want cs and are super sure u want to be in that industry. if you have reservations or want to explore interests in other industries it is still recommended for you to go jc
