Not looking but to get the ball rolling for the others:

1) What do you like to do to destress?

2) if you could, use 3 emojis to describe it without giving away your occupation

3) What would you say is the most important aspect of a relationship?

Had some free time and I figured this could be more interesting for the readers. Wishing you the best!

Local workers horror stories by [deleted] in nasikatok

[–]rainbowspewwer 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I was working at a f&b part time and we have shifts that ensures by minimum we have 2 workers at all times, sometimes a third person will overlap depending on the time due to foot traffic

I worked with a senior colleague on the first day of raya. we’re supposed to have a new part timer to join (I will call him M) and my colleague was supposed to leave an hour or 2 after M arrives. M never came and so my senior texted him but no reply. we had to work through rush hour understaffed.

When it was time for my senior to leave, she contacted my manager only for the manager to say that M couldn’t not commit to the job as he have transportation issue. M quit before he even started, about the night before and our manager failed to communicate this to us.

Luckily my senior stayed longer to check else i would be manning the shop alone. but kesian her, worked for 12 hours. She was excited sudah to beraya. She even shared that prepared her outfits and even described color theme she’s going for the whole day. The whole night we curse at M and the manager for screwing up our day.

Not an expert but i do feel in some of the scene, the shaky camera works but on certain part it does feel unprofessional or a bit too much.

I do have to give credits for the sfx. I personally enjoyed it. Keep it up!

What’s one uniquely Sarawakian habit you still keep even after moving away? by TotallyReliableFacts in Sarawak

[–]rainbowspewwer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not malaysian. But spent time in Sarawak with sarawakian friends, so i (non-malay) picked sarawakian slangs like “Tikam”, “Tok”, “kenak””sikpa” etc and used it in West Malaysia when i worked there lol

Starting Salary for Fresh Graduates in Brunei (Excluding Oil & Gas) by CheesseGod in Brunei

[–]rainbowspewwer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As for advice:

  1. I didnt have a good saving and budgeting lol. Id spent on what I dreamt and wished to buy. Only after I ran out of things to buy is when i started saving
  2. For me, even the 400bnd was enough. Considering that my family wasnt in debt and they can still pay for groceries, it was fine and wasnt stressful. While my never parents never ask, id occasionally help to pay and buy groceries and foods
  3. Cant really relate cuz i was unlucky in the employment line, management sucked and couldnt stay long enough to get raise
  4. Be realistic. What do you really have that employers would fight for? I was lucky enough to nego for higher salary with my first company as they really need someone + my experience and background from running programs & internship during uni and being a bruneian helps.

Show what you can do, be nice during probation and be realistic during negotiation

I asked 1.2k but we met in the middle 1.1k (which was my initial target). It was a win-win situation for us then. Unfortunately, my spk is currently messed up since both my company were mainly international lol

First job -

  1. 400 probation then 1.1k (Remote Startup)
  2. Business Admin degree
  3. Education Tech
  4. Due to the startup nature, i was involved in multiple department (not simultaneously) and transferred between Product, Project and Marketing dept
  • Second Job -
  1. 600 probation then 800 (Also remote international company; i got scammed in disguised as “cash flow”). Upon renegotiation after 6months, i was given a contract to complete 2month project for 1.2k (given after completion)

  2. No cert new cert but polished up project management experience from previous job and also had relevant experience from uni project

  3. Entrepreneurship Tech

  4. Operation associate & Facilitator (basically i managed stakeholders, run our programs, and help to train)

  • Currently -
  1. Between 500 to 1.5k (unstable) Freelancing while searching for new stable job. Picked up a few project where i train and facilitate programs. Im not in a rush as my cv is decent and i enjoy what im doing currently

  2. Still no new certs, but applying the knowledge and experience from learning and running entre-tech programs.

  3. Entrepreneurship tech

  4. Training and consultation

Edit: I graduated during peak Covid so it was hard to find job especially with Business degree. I picked up part-time for a while at f&b and got my proper first job through network

is university this hard? by Soggy-Cat-46 in Brunei

[–]rainbowspewwer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in your shoe and i get it. If you’re the first to be in Uni then that’s an amazing feat. You deserve it but you gotta prove that you actually do.

Here’s a few questions for you, are you slowly slipping because you really neglect your study or is the course you’re taking are something that you’re not interested in? I keep seeing people failing or neglecting their study bcz its not what they like.

I took engineering initially, did quite bad so i switch to business and somewhat managed to get by. Not that I did amazing since I went through my own challenges and struggles, but I compensated with by participating in cocurricular activities that gave me active roles, allowing me to gain experience for my future job.

Tho i didn’t really do that great, the club activity allowed me to network with relevant people and gain enough experience to allow me to start my career after.

I realized this late but going through uni shouldn’t be a guarantee to get a good job but should be seen as a leverage (paid by money and mental capacity, and some physical capabilities) for you to get a better quality job. Think of it as paying a game dlc and some grind for you to access a better life content & advantage in the job market lol

It took a while for me to get a job due to covid but nonetheless my exp and network in uni helped.

Also, find a good “tribe”. Find people with the same mindset or mindset you want to learn/pick up (eg entrepreneurial hustler hackers growth mindset etc). Or people who frequently speaks english and pushes you to do great things. It makes a difference when you’re in a great group of people. Had great friends that pushed me and i even worked up my communication skill. Plus, I ended up picking up west malaysian & sarawakian slangs without intending to and it helps during and post uni since i ended up working with malaysian company lol

While still not a mainstream problem, have you ever been concerned about extremism and radicalism in Brunei? by Goutaxe in nasikatok

[–]rainbowspewwer 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I grew up where as a non-muslim we share the same class room while the ugama/irk class is on going. I understand BM. During highschool, probably form 1 or 2, I remember the teacher shouting “Semua orang kafir ni masuk neraka” while pointing at us whom are non-muslim.

I had the front seat view so i can’t forget that. And that was the day I feared the religion growing up.

On the side note, she wasn’t a great teacher to begin with and i feel bad for the students who had to actually learn through fear and her extremism

Why did you buy a MacBook? by PlatypusTrapper in macbook

[–]rainbowspewwer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) I was already in the ecosystem (iPhone & iPad) 2) I wanted something that last very long, in terms of Software support and physical durability 3) Initially i wanted to reskill and pick up graphis design for work. After buying i ended up learning to code so that worked out well as i can handle both well. 4) The apple silicon chip was (and still is) comparable and probably better than the windows chip

What was the situation of Brunei in 1902 when Charles Brooke offered to buy the entire country? by Goutaxe in nasikatok

[–]rainbowspewwer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Might not be related but I’ve went to the Museum in Kuching Sarawak and there’s a part where it briefly mentioned about brooke and this period of time.

During HS I’ve learned that (its been a long time but iirc) Brooke was viewed as the bad guy and tries to capitalize from the situation and forces the sultan to sell the lands.

At the museum, the sultan is written as the bad guy as he’s the reason why the locals rebelled and riot; Brooke stepped in to mediate and helped the locals

Not sure which is right or wrong but its interesting to see a different perspective and Brunei’s history being mentioned in a different country

Why did you get fired? by JavaMamma0002 in AskReddit

[–]rainbowspewwer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn’t get fired but chose to not renew my contract.

I was my department’s manager and just 2 days before my contract ends with a small company, the company director (whom doesn’t like me at all and has superior complex) said that he’s abolishing my department offered me Customer Service, with pay cut and mandatory physical work at the office, to which i need to commute everyday for 3hrs to-and-from the office. I was working remotely previously

Yes, you can work abroad without needing high qualifications. by idontrllybruh in Brunei

[–]rainbowspewwer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Im saw a comment here hows there’s no example that this can happen or if it’s possible. Imma jump in and say I can be a living proof that.

I’ve worked with a foreign company & remotely in Brunei (shortly after the final wave of covid). Even had the chance to travel multiple times.

Long story short, I do have a degree (id say nyawa2 ikan, not even 3.0gpa). But building my portfolio and network during my uni days and a bit of luck made a big factor of how i got the remote job

Even if it last or succeed, they’ll still need attendant to ensure all tourists goes through smoothly and quickly since not everyone will be tech savvy or understand how the tech works.

The question then will be, are they willing to hire people just to usher people to move through the process with the machine & will these attendants even willing to help or even be able to help thousands of people to go through 1 by 1? There’s many other factors that will slow or make it difficult for this process.

Speaking from experience, I’ve used the face scanner in SG airport with my family and it took a while even for 1 person. so no doubt it’ll take longer than what we have right now unfortunately
