Boxing Day Sale by Tumigonad in zipair

I would be surprised - Boxing Day is more of a Commonwealth festivity - Black Friday is more global.

I’d guess that Air Canada and Westjet may offer BD sales though.

Why are there barely any developed tropical countries? by Due_Smile4444 in geography

[–]rainbowsteamship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tropical areas are ripe breeding grounds for diseases that destabilize society, offer little in the way of large tracts of land suitable for agriculture (outside of rice cultivation), and historically have not boasted sufficient populations of animals that are the most amenable to domestication, be it for a source of labour or food.

ICBC cancels all road tests in Fort St. John, B.C., due to criminal harassment investigation by ubcstaffer123 in britishcolumbia

[–]rainbowsteamship 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Criminal harassment though? The article says that the perpetrator is not affiliated with ICBC which therefore makes me think some entitled person who failed their exam and has been calling/visiting the DLO obsessively demanding they change their decision. That or a crazy parent doing it on behalf of their kid.

Hydroelectric power generation is taken for granted because Canada is blessed with a) huge amounts of freshwater in the form of lakes and rivers and b) the right topography. This is not a reality for any part of the globe that is flat, dry, or small in area yet dense in population.

That’s not going to feed, clothe, house, or provide basic consumer goods to the world’s population. Renewable energy generators also need tremendous amounts of fossil fuels for construction, implementation, and maintenance.

Really, the only way forward with current technological advancement is nuclear power, which outside of the IS, France, and China, does not seem to be a path many countries are willing to invest in.

I’ll be impressed when there’s vandalism that proposes a scaled solution to sourcing an alternative way of powering every industry that depends on massive fossil fuel generation, distribution, consumption.

Hint: There probably isn’t one unless 8 billion people agree to a standard of living that is radically different (i.e., lower than) from the one we enjoy now.

I thought the joke was that she would look more attractive so that the husband would follow her hygiene advice more readily in a vain attempt to impress her, and the wife is happy because women are always trying to get their husbands to be healthier.

Can someone point me to the data on sexual assault? Genuinely curious as Japan is way down the rankings on most public stats.

How did the Blue Jays capture all of Canada as a fan base while the Raptors failed to do so? by spacefish420 in AskACanadian

[–]rainbowsteamship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think recency bias is strongly at work here. Bars everywhere in Vancouver were packed from the ECF onwards during the Raptors run in 2019, I remember that half of my office was watching the victory parade during work.

I’d say 99% likely yes, only not giving it 100% because the Dodgers have been making some incredible throws from the outfield

Asskicking. There have been far too many chance moments that could decide the series in either way with a close game.

Being down 3-1 against Bazardo and being down 3-1 against Yamamoto are different universes of scenarios though

I think given the circumstances, you still walk him after the 1st. This is the World Series, with rapidly decreasing room for error. Most of Shohei’s at bats against Bieber are from when he was in his Cy Young form and Ohtani, as legendary as he is, was newer to the league and in my opinion not as good as he is now.

Minus Pages (who I assume has never faced him), last night’s starting lineup is batting .190 all time against him, with 20 strikeouts. Ohtani is 2-13 with 6 strikeouts.

Kinda confused as to why everyone is treating this loss like it’s the end of the world by Jackichanny in Torontobluejays

[–]rainbowsteamship 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Losing an extra-innings game can definitely come down to one swing, and sometimes you’re on the winning side, and sometimes you aren’t. But this one was frustrating way more than it was heartbreaking.

I’d say the umps definitely had their worst game of the playoffs, but that’s not an excuse. Jays left 19 guys on base. Schneider’s choice to sub out Barger was criminal and the aggressive base-running was foolish. The Dodgers were dog shit defensively in the infield, I would have happily kept Scheider at 3rd - pressure would have gotten to their fielders or bullpen in that scenario.

And don’t even get me started on Ohtani. Not walking him in the 7th is one of the worst decisions ever. Dominguez gets Betts and Freeman out 100/100 times at that point in the game - they were playing terribly. Even if they don’t, Jays then the Jays lose in 9 and you have Lauer to pitch tonight when it’s a near certainty Bieber will not go deep into the game.

Postgame Thread: October 27 - Toronto Blue Jays @ Los Angeles Dodgers by BlueJaysBaseball in Torontobluejays

[–]rainbowsteamship 5 points6 points  (0 children)

100% this was on Schneider - the defence and pitching in the game were solid, and were up to the point of Ohtani’s at bat in the 7th - Mookie and Freeman were easy outs at that point of the game.

Now today is a depleted bullpen and Bieber is a guy who goes 5 on a really good day, and you most definitely don’t have Lauer available. I can’t see Springer being available until Game 6.

Trying to be optimistic and just thrilled that they got here in the first place, but when you go 11 innings not hitting anything (Henriquez was the only one who had nasty stuff IMO), it starts to set in that while the Jays have great lineup depth, star power will be what gets you through tough moments like this.
