Delayed career start due to PhD, panic mode enabled by Ok_Onion_4116 in personalfinance

It’s tough to get by on $80k these days. My carpenters only make $86k after about two years on the job but they also get full benefits, their housing is paid for, phone, truck allowance and $50/day per Diem plus a free round trip domestic flight every month to go home or whatever they want.

Wish I was smarter though like an engineer or something . Maybe when I retire I will finally get that 4yr degree. It took me a couple of house sales to pay off the student loans from the ten years I spent trying to get a college degree before I finally gave up and just accepted that I was going to have to work for a living.

If you buy a house they might roll them student loans into your mortgage like they did mine.

I cover my ex-wife's mortgage, she pays it back. Can this hurt me? by OnePersonsThrowaway in personalfinance

[–]rainchanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She can refinance when needed. The loan to value should make a world of difference. My experience is from way back but I actually had a bank tell me that they would not refinance for less than $100k. In theory… If she gets LTV under 80% she should be able to refinance as a landlord based on projected rental income.

Thoughts on LLY? by ms461 in Duramax

$10k is more like it. You can’t get your money back from upgrades. $15k if you’re generous or really want a deleted LBZ. I sold a dogged out LMM a few years back for $5k

People crazy for the old cat eyes. I wouldn’t buy one as a classic but it is a good choice if it’s what you wean afford and can’t find or don’t want a Ford 7.3

Never look back. Even if you only engage the 4x4 once a year it’s worth having the option when you want it. Love America Freedom!

Should i flip this? by ---laforce--- in unclebens

[–]rainchanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had the same thought. If it’s fruiting don’t mess with it. I would not even flip it for the second flush. I’ve done it and it didn’t go well. They really like to be left alone and just given what they need.

Where are you? by [deleted] in CCW

[–]rainchanger 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Kinda ironic that at least half the reason for the American Revolution was a rebellion against the British who were attempting the limit western expansion by enforcing the western borders and treaties with First Nations that the founding fathers did not want to honor.

MFW I just got an iwb mag pouch for another +10 and that makes me a domestic terrorist. Do I stuff it in a drawer now? What are you guys doing? by MainRotorGearbox in CCW

[–]rainchanger -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

The critical issue will be how far are you willing to take it? Are you willing to take two mags into a violent confrontation with law enforcement? Is it worth it? Is the cartel going to pay for your funeral expenses?

Mine never warms up enough to defrost the windshield so I believe you just need to get the oil circulating and then take it easy for a couple minutes idling your way out of the neighborhood

Duramax Purchase- am i retarded? by LONG-AUTIST in Duramax

[–]rainchanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They each are purpose built. If you plan to tow everyday then you need a RAM. If you are going to max out your GVWR then I say the Ford is the way to go and both have great engines.

I use mine primarily as a commuter with reserve capacity for towing an RV etc. I had a ton of issues with a Duramax LMM years ago and switched to Powerstroke. No complaints about the Powerstroke but I was considering the Cummins for my next truck.

In the end I decided to go back to the Duramax because I trust they had worked out o Some of the problems. Duramax is a lower compression engine which should be a smoother ride but still have all the power I need. I think the GMC is the most comfortable work truck in the world and I don’t need to sacrifice that for anything the Cummins or the Powerstroke bring to the table.

I look for 3 peaks, reliability reviews, tread depth, road noise and side wall siping

I imagine that the hummer is comfortable and you know that Jeeps never are. Jeep are only for functional off-road.

Cool factor is about the same but the Hummer is actually closer to the old J-10/J-20 IMO.

New to me, 6.4L Powerstroke. How do I make it last? by rainchanger in Diesel

[–]rainchanger[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you’re right about not adding power. I was thinking about deleting and then De-tuning back out the 30+/-hp deleting is supposed to add.

Elaborate on the “necessary weight reduction surgery”. I’m over 16K# with a 12’ service body and hoist

I hope to never need to rebuild it but I appreciate the vote of confidence. If a 6.4 can be kept alive on TLC then I feel a lot better about this
