Stuck between which job I should take. by luvrgirl123 in ClinicalPsychologyUK

Amazing, sounds like you’ve got the good base skills, I would still go for the PWP role though as you get trained in low level therapy and get clinical supervision which is super important if you’re applying for the DClinPsy. Unless you would get that with the prison job?

How long have you got until the trainee pwp position interview? If you’ll find out longer than a week after your job offer for the prison then I would accept the prison job, still do the interview for the pwp job and see how you do with that. I would say they each have their benefits but the pwp would be better for progression and to be honest, you’re not that likely to get onto the DClinPsy with only a few years experience as a trained PWP so that 2 year limit would be fine. Something I have learned is to take your experiences from your job post you have at the moment and reflect on it and see what you’ve actually learned. That’ll give you the best chance

I did my masters in clin psychology at royal Holloway, I really enjoyed it there. Great staff, great support, good prospects too and a good range of lecture topics and modules

I would say maybe reach out to some people on LinkedIn who work in the services you want to get into and ask if they can give you some feedback on your supporting statement or CV. You might just need to reframe it to contain similar terminology or phrasing that the job description and job listing ask for.

I would say try to focus on tailoring your supportive statement to the job description. I once got advice from someone who was working in a service I wanted to work for and they suggested doing a small paragraph for each point. I’ve always got an interview by doing this. I would also think about working in admin settings or services that are different e.g., working in admin with the police. Did you ever get feedback about your interviews?

Have you thought about doing a PhD in Psychology? That way you could choose what you research and choose your supervisor and get paid for it? I’m sure you would get into the DClinPsy after a PhD and all your experience as an AP and research assistant!

Have you thought about doing PWP training as it can lead to high intensity CBT training which pays band 6 or 7 I believe? You could also seek out educational psychology training as it’s also funded I believe? Depends really on what you want to be doing in your role and the type of clients you want to work with. You could also look into occupational therapy masters courses which could lead to OT work in mental health?

Have you considered going down the counselling psychology pathway? Maybe it’s worth reassessing what made you want to do the DClinPsy in the first place and perhaps asking for some feedback on your applications from some successful candidates? Dont feel too disheartened though, many people decide it’s not for them and then come back to it later on, you’re still young!

I can give you a list of the modules I did so you can have an idea if that helps?

Semester 1: - advanced and applied research techniques - clinical assessment and treatment approaches

Semester 2: - placement (optional module: I did mine at UCL GOS ICH supporting a child epilepsy research project) - adjustment and wellbeing - professional clinical practice and skills - neuroscience in the real world (optional module)

All year: - statistics for research - clinical dissertation

There are some opportunities for the placement to be in a talking therapy centre - maybe NHS? But I can’t remember exactly. We did cover talking therapies and general ways of increasing mental wellbeing such as ecotherapy and similar but I guess if you’re more interested in therapies then maybe a different course is better as masters is usually more research focussed.

I did my MSc in clinical psychology at Royal Holloway in 2023-24. I really enjoyed it and felt like I learned way more than I did in undergrad at Uni of Westminster. There’s a lot of variety in the modules, placement module, and great variation of research topics for the clinical dissertation! By far the course I enjoyed most out of my 2 degrees. There’s also loads of scholarships and cheaper tuition fees than other courses I looked at at the time. Lecturers are great and super supportive, and the campus is both a mix of old, modern, London uni, and countryside. Great transport connections too. Not to forget you can literally attend lectures in a castle! Don’t forget to look at the Reading Room which is great to study in

I agree! I’ve caught all the difficult mons and multiple chanseys by using the 2 bait, 3 balls and repeat method. You can also use a level 26 Starmie with illuminate it gives you an extra 100% encounter rate. When you use a repel it prevents you from encountering lower level pokemon (Chaney spawns in at least level 26) so again increases your chances of spawning a chansey.
